3 bed semi here with 3 adults and someone home pretty much all the time. We pay £180 a month. We have the heating on when we need to and use computers, a tumbler and a dishwasher.

JohnTheRevelator · 30/06/2025 17:01

That sounds really high. I live alone and my electric is around £55 -£65 per month, and my gas in summer is around £35 - £40 per month, and £70 - £80 per month in winter (gas central heating). So my total in summer is about £90 - £105 in summer and £125 - £145 per month in winter.

Createausername1970 · 30/06/2025 17:02

That does seem high OP. We pay £180 a month for gas and electric. 3 adults. 2 work from home, the other games a lot. Dishwasher run most nights, washing machine averages 1 load a day. We use hob/oven most days.

£180 a month is too much in the summer as our gas usage is minimal. But in the winter the electricity usage goes up a bit, but the gas shoots up because of the gas central heating. Then the bills are £250+ for a few months, so £180 balances it out over the year.

You need to know your usage in Kwh.

Have you got daily / weekly / monthly figures for usage?

People can then see if it's gas or electric driving it

SqueamishHamish · 30/06/2025 17:14

£177.00. 3 bed semi, 2 adults, 2 teens. That has just come down from £230!

TheClockThatNeverStop · 30/06/2025 17:16

Op is paying back a debt on her energies....

WhereHasMyPlanetGone · 30/06/2025 17:17

What’s your usage?

Hotelmotelholidayinnnnnn · 30/06/2025 17:18

That is high, we’re a family of 5 and ours is )120 a month and we run aircon constantly! (We don’t have gas it’s all electric)

ForLovingAquaSheep · 30/06/2025 17:19

4 bed detached, always at least one person WFH. 2 adults one child. £250.

Over the course of a year what means we overpay a little bit and are always in credit at the end of the winter. I'd rather have it as an inefficient savings account rather than have chase me for money. I'll never scrimp in a cold house.

Allseeingallknowing · 30/06/2025 17:19

£101 a month for couple in detached 3 bed house- thought that was enough!

Mingenious · 30/06/2025 17:19

Ours is around that but it’s a large detached house with high ceilings and suspended floors (so hard to heat) and we’re all here a lot.

EleanorReally · 30/06/2025 17:19

have you gone through your usage with a fine tooth comb?

Siarli · 30/06/2025 17:23

You are not giving enough information. Firstly , I assume you are on Direct Debit. Have you built up arrears? The energy company will build in any debt and divide it amongst your payments for the year. Have you submitted meter readings regularly? The biggest user of energy is the central heating, since your CH is off now you wont be clocking that up. Analyse what electric appliances you are using. Freezers, stoves, ovens, tumble driers, washers are all thirsty. Decide where you can make economies. Think about insulation, make sure you don't waste heat, get a smart meter or a thermostat control like HIVE or NEST to keep in control of the heating. If you are having issues paying for your energy talk to your energy provider, they are very helpful usually. Also, make sure you get any benefits you are entitled to to offset your bills.

MsDDxx · 30/06/2025 17:25

Nope - about £120 for both combined and I have a 5 bed house. Two adults, one child.

monktasmic · 30/06/2025 17:29

£250 a month year round for both in our quite big roomed, high ceilinged, big bay windows, insulated as much as it can be Victorian Terrace. 4 of us charging things.
2 of us WFH.We have wood burner lit most of the year as the house is freezing and retains no heat.

I think ours is high compared to some of these tbh - yours seems massive. I would Che k you are not paying someone else’s debts off?

Ruelzdontapplyhere · 30/06/2025 17:29

2 bed flat with 3 adults and 3 children electric is £200 a month we use a lot less gas £40 a month.

tumblingdowntherabbithole · 30/06/2025 17:32

Are you paying back any debts from winter?

We pay around £75 a month for both, two-bed terrace.

alexalisten · 30/06/2025 17:35

No thats ridiculous. I pay £100 a month and am in credit. 2 adults 2 kids 2 bed terraced house. No dishwasher. Do have a tumble dryer which is used a lot

alexalisten · 30/06/2025 17:37

Do you have a cannabis farm in your loft?

Idontknowhatnametochoose · 30/06/2025 17:37

My bill is £47. One person. I bed flat, but charge up mobility scooter every night snd I'm here all day.

Meadowfinch · 30/06/2025 17:38

I pay £100 a month for a house, one adult, one teen. Showers, washing machine, dishwasher, gaming PC, gas central heating.

£300 sounds ludicrous to me.

dementedpixie · 30/06/2025 17:46

Is that how much you pay per month?
How does it compare to how much you are using as the monthly direct debit may not match this amount

I pay £320 per month for a 4 bed detached and last month our usage was £200. We are only just in credit and then that will build up before our usage goes up over winter

FuriousInventions · 30/06/2025 18:00

Mine is just over £300. There are 5 of us, tumble drier, wfh so using electricity/internet all day, and DH’s massive fish tank which has various lights, heaters and filters running constantly.

Waitingfordoggo · 30/06/2025 18:03

Ours is about that during the winter but a bit less at the moment. We’re in a large 4 bed house. Two older teens. Electric car.

New2you · 30/06/2025 18:08

We pay like over £700 a month for gas and electricity which might seem high but it powers:

Large house, family of five, electric cars, lots of stuff that several fridges everywhere for wine/food. Hot tub, air conditioning. Gym machinery. Washing and drying clothes every day multiple loads.

So I think these things are quite varied! Depending on usage.
