Nadiya Hussain responds to critics

I can understand her being upset that her shows have been axed, apparently ratings were falling, However, I find it hugely disappointing that she has brought race/religion into it. No one is entitled to a BBC show and I think she has had a bloody good run. AIBU?

Hi

Victoria Derbyshire was axed with good ratings… I think it was political…

I suspect it was a mixture of drop in rating and some racism

TesChique · 29/06/2025 10:22

Shhh that doesn't suit the narrative

It's also not true, so I don't get the point. When are poor white people told to 'be grateful'?

AgnesX · 29/06/2025 10:28

I wasn't impressed with her last series (recipes with left over banana skins amongst others) but I can see that it might appeal to some.

It's a decade on and things/taste/style have moved on. On that note, I wish they'd retire Mary, she's at the point where she's recycling her recipes.

So, it's worth having a think about why they have dropped Nadiya and have never dropped Mary.

TonTonMacoute · 29/06/2025 10:31

She shouldn't be forced to feel grateful, but she's not owed a slot on the BBC either - no one is, it's highly competitive.

Bosses want someone new, it's nothing personal, and there are so many opportunities elsewhere now to continue doing what she does.

Because Mary is better.

Guavafish1 · 29/06/2025 10:32

Watched the video and the comments she received are completely racist and sexist undertone

EleanorReally · 29/06/2025 10:32

was she dropped because of being obviously muslim?

EleanorReally · 29/06/2025 10:33

tbh mary berry was unpopular for a very long time

That's a matter of opinion
Nadiyah for me

Why do you say that for why she was dropped?

VisitationRights · 29/06/2025 10:19

I don’t think she has been treated unfairly by the BBC, their decision not to continue a show with her is not race related. If they had decided to keep doing a show despite the decline in ratings it likely would have been race related!

undoubtedly she has faced racism online across platforms but that it not the reason her show was not renewed.

The decision may or may not have been unfair, we don't know. What she is reacting to and what absolutely should be called out is the "be grateful you had so long/were chosen at all" message.

Seoulgal · 29/06/2025 10:34

Nadiya is a well paid celebrity so why are people comparing her to a poor white person being told to be grateful anyway ?

I’m not saying that’s ok either but it’s hardly a like for like comparison and therefore quite irrelevant to this discussion.

If you can find other (white) celeb chefs being told to be grateful in her situation then say that.

However comparing her treatment to the treatment received by poor white/Black/Asian people etc isn’t the gotcha that you think that it is. And if you think poor white people are told to be grateful in the UK wait until you hear what they tell poor British POC…

Nadiyah for me

Thats my point, It has nothing to do with what people are trying to make it about.
Its plain ole preferance, and her ratings have dropped.
I like Nadiyay, But i prefer Marys cooking/books.

HappydaysArehere · 29/06/2025 10:36

She went over the top with her anger. She had done well and was fortunate to have the opportunities she has had. Nothing to do with colour. Better to have shown a more balanced and more pleasant presentation of herself. She could have thanked the BBCfor the series she has had and then looked around for other opportunities.

Ohthatsabitshit · 29/06/2025 10:37

I agree with the tedium of being grateful. She’s a really impressive woman and I hope we get to see her work on TV and paper in the future. Well said Nadiya

See this is what she was angry about attitudes and comments like this, i mean how dare she show any kind of thought feeling or emotion. Do you think she is solely reacting to.her bbc contact

justasking111 · 29/06/2025 10:39

It's estimated she's worth around £3.7 million so has a strong position. BBC turned down Clarksons Farm, remake of All Creatures Great and Small. They're not the best choosers of interesting programmes

Go and look on any thread on here about social housing!

This is just the way with TV chefs. They’re huge and then they’re not.
When I was a kid, Gary Rhodes was on EVERYTHING.
There are very, very few who manage to stay at the forefront and that’s usually because they do other things to bring them to the national conscious away from cooking. Food is a fashion and it moves on like fashion icons do.
If it was a race/ religion thing, she wouldn’t have been given the tv shows and book deals in the first place.

Apart from him being a professional chef with lots of other business interests, have a google and see why Gary Rhodes isn't on TV anymore.

Ddakji · 29/06/2025 10:39

She right about being expected to feel grateful all the time, but wrong about being treated unfairly. TV and books are businesses. If your sales drop, you go. Nothing unfair about that.

crumpet · 29/06/2025 10:40

LadyKenya · 29/06/2025 09:30

I hear her, and understand what she is saying. Why should she be grateful?

I’d be pretty grateful if I was a housewife, won a competition and got a 10 year tv career out of it. I would also appreciate that I’d worked hard and had a talent, and also that tv schedules change - look at Lorraine for example, who’s been a fixture in tv schedules for donkeys years and has had her show cut to 30 minutes

EveryKneeShallBow · 29/06/2025 10:40

ItsUpToYou · 29/06/2025 09:30

She’s bringing race into it because it’s relevant. You won’t understand if you’re white, especially if you’re white and British-born, but others are forever being told to be “grateful” to Britain in a way that you will never be. It’s exhausting and I’m glad she’s telling everyone to fuck off in the politest way possible.

(ETA I also wouldn’t care if she said it in the most impolite way, but I imagine that would have created even more of an outrage…)

Edited

That’s an interesting perspective. Thank you for explaining it to me.

I’ve watched that video and she states that she has been treated unfairly but doesn’t say how, I’m assuming she means because her show has been axed?
The problem is tv is very competitive, it’s not like me working in my admin job. So there are probably loads of people who work harder than her and are more talented but will never get a break.
She doesn’t come across very well to me. I can understand her disappointment but I think it’s best aired privately rather than a public winge.
