Nadiya Hussain responds to critics

I can understand her being upset that her shows have been axed, apparently ratings were falling, However, I find it hugely disappointing that she has brought race/religion into it. No one is entitled to a BBC show and I think she has had a bloody good run. AIBU?

She can be as disappointed as she wants - privately. Publicly she should be professional and gracious if she wants to carry on with a media career. That's not racism in the slightest, that's how it is for everyone. I found her whinging very tedious.

Swiftie1878 · 29/06/2025 10:15

She’s apparently responding to comments that we have not seen.
Hard to tell if she’s being unreasonable, but it doesn’t sound like she is. I’m sure she is grateful to the BBC, but she’s allowed to also be upset with them for cancelling her shows, regardless of whether it is the right decision for the organisation or not. It’s been her career for the last 10 years - she’s bound to be upset.

This is just the way with TV chefs. They’re huge and then they’re not.
When I was a kid, Gary Rhodes was on EVERYTHING.
There are very, very few who manage to stay at the forefront and that’s usually because they do other things to bring them to the national conscious away from cooking. Food is a fashion and it moves on like fashion icons do.
If it was a race/ religion thing, she wouldn’t have been given the tv shows and book deals in the first place.

Wilful ignorance or poor comprehension skills?

I enjoyed "Nadya's Asian Odyssey", and I think maybe travel programmes could be her thing?

Agree - she has such a natural, warm presenting style. Her series where she toured the UK with emphasis on local food was a nice watch too. Her interactions with people always seem far more genuine than many other cookery types.

Media and fame is incredibly fickle & anyone who makes a career off a reality show is lucky .

I mean Bake off is for people with talent and skill she didn't roll off love island into 5 minutes of fame!

fanmepls · 29/06/2025 10:19

Bake off is still a form of reality show, lots of them require particular skills.

Yes her programmes were good a feelgood and interesting watch.

VisitationRights · 29/06/2025 10:19

I don’t think she has been treated unfairly by the BBC, their decision not to continue a show with her is not race related. If they had decided to keep doing a show despite the decline in ratings it likely would have been race related!

undoubtedly she has faced racism online across platforms but that it not the reason her show was not renewed.

fanmepls · 29/06/2025 10:09

They probably wouldn't use that word if Mary Berry or Holly Willoughby were fired.

HW should defo be grateful for such a long run, she isn't very good!

She should probably go into comedy. That "but are you ok?" thing was the funniest thing I'd seen in ages.

Yes, I agree. I hope she can do more of that kind of thing. She's very natural and friendly.

everynameistaken123 · 29/06/2025 10:20

I think any gratitude should at least go both ways - the BBC should be grateful for Nadiya working for them. Presumably she helped them make money for at least a while because of her appeal to audiences. (Maybe they have thanked her/are grateful - don't mean to make assumptions.)

fanmepls · 29/06/2025 10:21

I watched one of her shows & like her, she's very personable & relatable hence why she is popular.

MagentaRocks · 29/06/2025 10:21

Wordsmithery · 29/06/2025 09:34

Well perhaps race WAS a factor given that people have been commenting that she should be grateful. They probably wouldn't use that word if Mary Berry or Holly Willoughby were fired. They'd say, 'they had a good run, they've got loads of experience and will go on to find something else that uses their presenting skills.'
So, while Nadiya should accept that brutal axes are a sad aspect of TV life, she's also got the right to point out that the gratitude word has difficult connotations for her.

I agree with this. People definitely wouldn’t be telling her to be grateful if she was white, however I don’t understand why she was treated unfairly by the BBC. It doesn’t say what her issue is, just that it was axed because of low ratings. She may well have been treated unfairly but I don’t know the reason why this is.

DeffoNeedANameChange · 29/06/2025 10:21

I love Nadiya and I completely understand her point. She doesn't have to feel "grateful" for being talented and hardworking.

Ps it's easier not to "bring race and religion into everything" if your race/religion don't have much impact on everything.

BIWI · 29/06/2025 10:22

EasternStandard · 29/06/2025 09:40

I just googled as had not heard of her, to see who had asked her to feel grateful. In a quote she says she’s allowed to feel angry at being treated unfairly. Was she treated unfairly?

You have never heard of her? Have you been living under a rock for the last 10 years or so?! Grin

TesChique · 29/06/2025 10:22

Kendodd · 29/06/2025 09:40

Actually (poor) white people are told to be grateful all the time.

Shhh that doesn't suit the narrative

Do you think Nadiya stepped out of line?

I don't think you have to step out of line.

It's like what happened to Stacey Solomon.
When she said something about how her team deserved an award or something and there was a huge backlash.

If TV personalities want to continue to work in the public eye they need to consider their brand.

And straight to camera complaints/ rants or just an objection to perceived injustice especially on social media doesn't always come across well.

Weepixie · 29/06/2025 10:26

@PruthePrune Nadia made it very clear in the insta post she was responding in reply to mail and comments she’d received from people. It’s not something she decided to do on the spur of the moment just for the sake of it.

I thought her post was spot on and I wish her all the best for the future.

ItsUpToYou · 29/06/2025 10:26

TesChique · 29/06/2025 10:22

And what’s the “narrative”? Racism? Are you saying racism doesn’t exist? Are you saying that you are in a better position to understand the nuances of racism than a non-white person would be?

On a separate note, OP’s “disappointment” at Nadiya “bringing race into it” is incredibly jarring. Why do so many people love to pretend that racism doesn’t exist? Because you haven’t experienced it personally?

EasternStandard · 29/06/2025 10:27

BIWI · 29/06/2025 10:22

It’s easy I haven’t watched Bake Off for years. Nor cooking shows.

Pigriver · 29/06/2025 10:27

I absolutely agree with Nadiya and well done on her speaking out.
My understanding is that she is quite outspoken about the war in Gaza which may not align with the BBC which may have contributed to her being axed. On SM she said she was finding it hard and insensitive to make shows about food when millions are starving. Also her latest book is very much aimed at Muslims are is centred around Ramadan and breaking fast (which is great btw) but maybe all of these things combined means the BBC took a step back.
She is absolutely allowed to feel hurt and upset and yes the message about 'you should be grateful for what you had' is a terrible one very much entrenched in racism and should be addressed.

VisitationRights · 29/06/2025 10:27

You just don’t get it. Refuse to understand a narrative different than your own.

Ainsley Herriot popped up recently. Hadn't seen him for years.

Chefs do have a shelf life. It's up to her agency to think hard about her next move.

AgnesX · 29/06/2025 10:28

I wasn't impressed with her last series (recipes with left over banana skins amongst others) but I can see that it might appeal to some.

It's a decade on and things/taste/style have moved on. On that note, I wish they'd retire Mary, she's at the point where she's recycling her recipes.
