Neighbours having their own Glasto this evening

About 4 houses along on the adjoining road (our back gardens join on to each other) are having their own version of Glastonbury this evening. They have a music system set up and a DJ. Bizarrely, I can’t hear the sounds of partying / people as such.

it is ridiculously loud and I can’t even have a conversation in my back garden without shouting. The gardens are tiny, only about 10m x 20m so it is less than 50m away.

I have all my windows shut and can still hear it perfectly in every room.

my only hope is that they started at 6.30pm so maybe it’ll finish early. [clutches at straws]

I accept it is a 1 off, and don’t mind the occasional party, but the noise levels are totally inappropriate for the middle of a residential area whatever time of day it is. There are kids around trying to get to sleep now, and they’ll have no chance. .

I can’t even give up and dance to it, as it is shit european folky stuff. Lots of wailing and accordions and the like.

I rang 101 for advice, and they gave me the local out of hours number for the council, but the answerphone message said they were closed when I called them.

aibu for being really pissed off - not at the party as such - just the ridiculously loud music?

People are so concerned these days with their “rights”, which mainly seem to be to do exactly what they want whenever they want, with no care at all for how their behaviour impacts those around them. It has such a knock-on effect on the quality of life in a community. Amazed by how many people here think OP is being unreasonable to object to a LIVE ROCK BAND in the garden, it’s clear that they don’t worry about being noisy themselves.

I can't understand the reference on other threads like this to the Councils guidance and rules ref timings for noise. E.g it's all ok to be an inconsiderate arse because it's not 11pm 😭

As if the Council is a paragon of appropriate and decent behaviour?

Yes ok, people are allowed to make noise until 11pm but on what planet pie head tin foil BBQ, is it deemed considerate to mow your lawn at 10.30pm on Monday right in front of your neighbours window; to blast shit music.

And who made you the arbitrators of what’s acceptable or not

I just dont think wasting police time over petty shit is the way forward if this was happening every night absolutely but its not.

Well as someone who went to complain got punched I’d say it very much is a police matter

That is but op called 2 hrs prior to that

Calling 101 to ask a question that you can google or ask on here is a waste of police time i think its very obvious op thought they would do something about it

At a risk of repeating myself and?

So you honestly believe op just rang to ask a question

If the noise is that loud she has every right to report it. I thought that was obvious 🤷

Are you seriously telling me to ask on here instead of calling 101 to ask for advice?

How many times have I read posts with multiple well-meaning but often wrong posters giving conflicting advice, that end with someone saying “Don’t take advice from us. You need to get proper advice from a professional”

and taken from my local police website

Call 101 for non-emergency enquiries.

And I did Google initially. Saw the above official information to call them for non-emergency enquiries, so I did.

Nothing spurious or underhand going on. I’m sorry if that’s disappointing.

Yes its not a life or death situation its barely even a situation you didn't need to ring them to ask a really basic question that anybody on here could of answered. If you had put a post up on here asking what time do people need to shut up by people would of answered and nobody would of said ring the police to ask them

All of this is an according to your opinion only. You weren’t there so have no idea how loud it was. Unless of course you are the sort of neighbour who causes these type of disturbances?

It doesnt matter how loud it was it was a one off

That’s bizarre logic. So you can do whatever you like in life as long as it’s only once? Plus, how do you know they werent planning to do it again?

Exactly! It’s called being a decent person which seems to be sadly lacking in so many people

Weefreetiffany · 30/06/2025 21:18

Yeah we have neighbours like this, sometimes the soundsystem is out at 9am on a sunday. If you complain they say close your windows if you don't like it. I say hey thats not how we do things in this country and you should adapt to us and be neighbourly. They say tough shit and laugh in my face. I deeply feel for you OP and suspect all those “its only a one off” people’s parents never told them no or taught them how to live in a community.

alexalisten · 30/06/2025 22:01

So people are never allowed to have parties or bbq or let their kids play outside because it might annoy the neighbours

Gettingbysomehow · 30/06/2025 22:03

I'd have called the police. Not the emergency number of course. I ever confront rowdy people direct I don't want to get punched.

Not if they are being inconsiderate of their neighbours.

Noise enforcement should be the responsibility of the police. I'm not sure which government changed the law, but it was a mistake.

Good luck with that - they can't even investigate 'proper' crime so I'm not sure they're best placed to deal with it - plus what a waste of resources :(

alexalisten · 30/06/2025 22:47

DipsyDee · 30/06/2025 22:08

Not if they are being inconsiderate of their neighbours.

But what one person believes is inconsiderate another doesnt. So if you was having a chat in the garden with your partner and I was your neighbour and I said your being inconsiderate you would just go in and never sit in your garden again

But you weren’t there were you so you have no idea how lousy it was. You also seem to be ignoring the fact that ANOTHER neighbour went to the house, asked them to turn it down and got punched

Im not ignoring someone got punched im pointing out that op rang the police 2 hrs prior to that. I also not saying it wasnt loud. What i am saying is I dont agree with you I'm would have no issues with my neighbours having a one off party if it was every night until 2/3 am I would have an issue. But your point blank saying you cant do anything if your neighbours think its inconsiderate and im pointing out some people find anything and everything inconsiderate.

Daysgo · 01/07/2025 08:17

You are being unreasonable not to appreciate sound of accordions, concertinas and folk or maybe just traditional European music🤣🤣🤣

But having now actually read thread op, yanbu in terms of both loudness and punching.
