Neighbours having their own Glasto this evening

About 4 houses along on the adjoining road (our back gardens join on to each other) are having their own version of Glastonbury this evening. They have a music system set up and a DJ. Bizarrely, I can’t hear the sounds of partying / people as such.

it is ridiculously loud and I can’t even have a conversation in my back garden without shouting. The gardens are tiny, only about 10m x 20m so it is less than 50m away.

I have all my windows shut and can still hear it perfectly in every room.

my only hope is that they started at 6.30pm so maybe it’ll finish early. [clutches at straws]

I accept it is a 1 off, and don’t mind the occasional party, but the noise levels are totally inappropriate for the middle of a residential area whatever time of day it is. There are kids around trying to get to sleep now, and they’ll have no chance. .

I can’t even give up and dance to it, as it is shit european folky stuff. Lots of wailing and accordions and the like.

I rang 101 for advice, and they gave me the local out of hours number for the council, but the answerphone message said they were closed when I called them.

aibu for being really pissed off - not at the party as such - just the ridiculously loud music?

Ringing 101 for a party at 8pm om a Sunmer Saturday is peak mumsnet

Agree!

MsTamborineMan · 29/06/2025 19:48

Tbh I actually cant believe someone called 101 because their neighbour was playing some loud folk music at 8pm on a Saturday

It was off before 11pm. It was a one off. Hardly a massive issue.

I love it. I love this site.

Nb I'd find it annoying, of course I would. But as a one off I'd tell myself to not be a crank.

Or rather stop being a crank

For goodness sake, how many times do I need to say that this was not just loud music. It was festival level music with a sound system and a DJ.

I have said at least once that it was the level of the music that was the issue.

If you read my original thread correctly I rang 101 for advice. Advice. Not to complain or call the police. ‘Usual’ party noise I would never complain about, but this was beyond that, so I rang for advice. Also, at 8pm I had no idea it would stop by 10* . It could have still been going on at midnight or later so I was afree advice to see if things were different once that time threshold had been reached.

*it stopped when the near neighbour went round to ask them to turn it down and was punched, so the police were called and attended anyway.

I would bloody hate this but also think as it’s a one off and summer etc, I’d go on booking.com and get a cheap room for the night.

No such thing as a cheap room round here and I don’t have a spare £100+ to accommodate inconsiderate neighbours.

Use google for advice you rang the police because you thought the would go round and tell them to be quiet but they didn't as nobody cares if people are making noise at 8pm in the summer on a weekend

Sorry but you’re wrong. It wasn’t clear online, and I didn’t know if it depended on the volume and / or time, or other things. I am not a serial complainer so I genuinely didn’t know. And in such situations, I find it always better to talk to a real person when possible. It is easy to misunderstand things online…much like you misunderstanding what I am saying.

But what information did you want did you think it was a criminal offence to play music at 8pm

mit123 · 29/06/2025 23:18

There are so many entitled people around - music blaring- people shouting and bloody dogs barking at all times day night and early morning - selfish

Remind me where I said I thought it was a criminal offence to play music at 8pm?

Oh that’s right, I never said that.

As for what information did I want? I’ve addressed that already.

I think it’s quite different if it’s a one off vs regular parties. For a one off, even if it’s a loud rock band in a tiny garden it’s fine until 10pm on weekends, but I’m talking about once a year at most.

Right but is every household entitled to set up a loud rock band in a tiny garden on a one off basis? Because that’s plenty of peoples’ enjoyment of their home during the summer ruined. It’s not for you to make that decree.

A loud rock band in a tiny garden, I genuinely think people have gone insane

I had a neighbour who would blast music during the day. I lived opposite and it would make the windows at the back of my house rattle.
Lots of neighbours complained and he got a letter from the council. This was after be threatened DH who asked him to turn it down.

dogcatkitten · 30/06/2025 12:39

Those saying chill out, it’s a summer Saturday night.

do you genuinely think it’s acceptable to play music so loud that your neighbours can’t have a conversation in their own garden because it’s so loud?

I don’t, that’s a ridiculous volume.

Yes it is, it's so unfair.

PyongyangKipperbang · 28/06/2025 22:26

Give it another half an hour, ring 101 and say that you can hear fighting and screaming. Not ethical but might just do the job.

Excellent use of police time. Well done on such a great suggestion.

Found one out of the other neighbours did…and got punched in the face.

The police should have been called after this and the person who threw the punch arrested

People are so concerned these days with their “rights”, which mainly seem to be to do exactly what they want whenever they want, with no care at all for how their behaviour impacts those around them. It has such a knock-on effect on the quality of life in a community. Amazed by how many people here think OP is being unreasonable to object to a LIVE ROCK BAND in the garden, it’s clear that they don’t worry about being noisy themselves.

SuburbanSprawl · 30/06/2025 13:07

It is a bit of a drag having to share the planet with other people but I'm pleased to say that Elon Musk is working on it.

ByLemonFish · 30/06/2025 13:10

Our neighbour just can't sit in his garden/shed without playing loud music
No respect for anyone else

Pleaseshutthefuckup · 30/06/2025 13:15

PlutarchHeavensbee · 28/06/2025 21:48

You’re not alone with being sick to the back teeth of entitled arsehole neighbours who believe they’re within their rights to behave exactly how they want, when they want and fuck everybody else.

I’d give anything to have enough money to move into the middle of nowhere and not have to live within a ten mile radius of anyone, ever again. Especially if they have fucking dogs they buy and then can’t be arsed to take care of so they howl for hours at a time.

I feel your pain.

Neighbours have expanded seating and other bits in their garden signalling more noise torture coming my way.

I feel that it's almost impossible to live side by side as humans sometimes when we have such differing wants, needs and habits.

Many people have a dearth of reasonable values.

I would be ok with this one off party but would have to breathe my way through it possibly and remind myself it's ok.
