What time would you put an 11 and 13 year old to bed over the holidays?

If you have nothing for the kids to get up for in the morning? My husband and I can't agree what time is reasonable and looking for opinions.

@arethereanyleftatallYou monitor screen time for your 17 year old? That’s bizarre! They’re almost an adult!

It isn’t really that I monitor it now, more that we did it for years when they got phones, around secondary time, that it’s just habit for everyone to give me their phone around 10. My 17yo is actually the best in the house, much better than I am, at putting down her phone to wind down for bed.

I’ve a 12yo and a 9yo. They share a bedroom and I put them to bed at the same time. I read them a few pages of whatever we’re on at the time (rn it’s Harry Potter), then sit with them til they’re asleep. School nights, lights are out by 9pm. Weekends/holidays, 9:30-10ish. X

At that age?? Yikes - they are still pretty young and have a lot of sleeping to do - I would suggest at the very least 9pm - with the proviso that if they are still tired they can read in bed. But absolutely NO electronics in their bedrooms.

I appreciate what you're saying; different hourses for different courses.
My 7 year olds go to bed at 9 and wake up the next day (mainly) refreshed.
So, yeah, I guess 10/11 for a tween and teen doesn't sound too late to me.

Mine are 10 and 12. Def no “putting to bed” but gentle encouragement happens about 10.30. Lights out ideally 11 but sometimes later,

10 and 12 seems really young to be up so late, are they knackered the next day?

I need a fair bit of sleep so I’m usually in bed by 10 and asleep by 10.30. At that age my dd would have been in bed and asleep by 9 in the holidays (8 during term time.)

Now I would say at 12 8pm is so early, I can't imagine it, from about age 6/7 mine played cricket, tennis, football and theuly all finsihed after 8pm. Different people have different sleep needs as well as different times they need to get up. Mine didnt have to get up till 715/730 so no need to go to sleep before 11. They'd chill in their rooms and sleep when they needed to.

They need to manage themselves. Mine are 14 and 15, bedtime is around 11pm

Mica8 · 02/07/2025 22:39

930-10 I’d say

Tiredofwhataboutery · 02/07/2025 22:43

Screens off at 9pm can read / chill till 10pm. I don’t think I’m overly strict. 12/14 here. I think it’s good to have downtime before bed and they do need limits.

mediummumma · 02/07/2025 22:54

My 11 year old mostly goes to bed before I prompt her because she’s tired. That’s normally around 10pm. My 13 year old would stay up past midnight if I let him, so it’s usually 11pm if we don’t have to get up and out first thing.

I’d keep bossing them about till at least 18.

Do you have a 17 year old ?

Oreo07 · 02/07/2025 23:29

9 for 11 year old and 9.30 for 13 year old

stayathomer · 02/07/2025 23:33

My 10 and 12 yos are awake at 7 no matter what so generally about half nine for ten year old, twelve year old half ten (edited to add and sometimes before that depending on how tired or how mad a day it was)
