Neurospicy

Bearinthesmallmessyflat · 28/06/2025 18:33

I’ll preface this by saying I’m neurodivergent myself (adhd)
I’ve notice more and more people using the phrase neurospicy instead of neurodivergent. It started off online but now I know people who use it in person and I absolutely bloody hate it.
I don’t know if I’m being unreasonable because I can’t really articulate why I dislike it so much? It’s a bit like the ‘oh I’m just so weird and crazy people’ I feel

It might have started out as a sort of tongue-in-cheek description and then just sort of became a 'thing' from there.

SteakBakesAndHotTakes · 28/06/2025 18:38

It's the overused tryhard quirkiness of it, it annoys me too...it's like cockwomble and all those other 'hilarious' ones

BlueyNeedsToFuckOff · 28/06/2025 18:38

I hate it. But then I’m still using “neurodiverse” as I hate “neurodivergent” as well, just not as much as “neurospicy”.

IME “neurospicy” is largely used by those who make ND their entire identity.

Kettlemetal · 28/06/2025 18:38

I hate it too.

But I am also tired of the absolute numbers of people everywhere (esp in my profession) making this front and centre of their personality and expecting us all to be captivated. And I will get hunted down on this thread for being horrific and intolerant but that’s how I feel. I have a child who is ND but thankfully doesn’t think this is a ‘super power’ and something that they should preface every conversation with. It’s just something that they live with and that’s relevant at certain times to raise but at other times not.

Adults making it their entire being is exhausting I’m sorry however sparkly they make it with silly language.

smallglassbottle · 28/06/2025 18:39

It's ridiculous. I'm audhd and 55 there ain't no way I'm going to describe myself as spicy 😂 it's funny seeing the way the younger ND generations define themselves. They're so much more confident and on it. I didn't even know what was wrong with me until 45.

JLou08 · 28/06/2025 18:40

I'm autistic and it annoys me.

TigerRag · 28/06/2025 18:41

I feel it just minimises the difficulties we have. Just as bad as differently abled

leopardprint17 · 28/06/2025 18:42

Yep, autistic adhd here and it makes me feel uncomfortable. I think because 'spicy' has other connotations these days - spicy content etc .. Just no

BlueyNeedsToFuckOff · 28/06/2025 18:43

You say that (and I’m totally with you), but the first time I heard it was from someone in their 50s referring to themselves!

Hedgehogshelp · 28/06/2025 18:43

What fresh hell is this

Optimustime · 28/06/2025 18:43

I've found that the people who use this in real life are the late diagnosed and slightly 'out there' women who are quite loud and openly scatty (I am scatty but try my hardest not to be rather than lean into it and use it as an excuse for everything). I think Edina from ab fab would have used it.

Permanentlymisunderstood · 28/06/2025 18:44

It comes across as twee and belittling I think. Minimising the challenges that so many face daily by making it sound all fun and quirky.
I mean, fine if that’s how a person wants to be seen. I don’t like it myself, and neither does my ND child.

Hedgehogshelp · 28/06/2025 18:44

Can we bring goths and EMOs back please

TiptoeThroughTheToadstools · 28/06/2025 18:44

Haven't heard that phrase but I think people should be able to call their neurodivergency whatever they like.

BlushingBrightly · 28/06/2025 18:46

Yes, it feels belittling and also very 'I'm mad me!' / 'look how cool and quirky I am'. Like it's all a lifestyle choice

Oh no! 😂

Hoardasurass · 28/06/2025 18:47

I find that the only people who use it are the self IDing asd/adhd that use the term and honestly I don't know what pisses me off more the term neurospicy or the fact that people think it's OK to just self id as asd

MyUmberSeal · 28/06/2025 18:49

It’s a shit and naff phrase used by people who want to look a bit kooky. It doesn’t work, they sound like idiots.

Kimchiii · 28/06/2025 18:50

I found it confusing initially , because in the online bookish world “spicy” is often used to mean sex. So for example they’ll say “this book had a lot of spice in it”

So when I first seen people saying they are neurospicy it caught me off guard and I had to check what they mean 😂 it doesn’t bother me too much but I still don’t really get why it’s used shrugs

Yes I don’t think young people are describing themselves as neurospicy.

Optimustime · 28/06/2025 18:52

It's the kind of person who uses star sign horoscope or even worse, MBTI profile in casual conversation "oh well, you know me, I am an ENTJ"

I did self ID for the whole 7 years I was awaiting assessment because I knew.
Who goes round saying they have something they don’t unless they recognise it in themselves and what person without it would think they did if they didn’t? It wouldn’t cross their mind.

theunbreakablecleopatrajones · 28/06/2025 18:59

It’s the self conscious quirkiness but also the implication that being neurodivergent is positive experience if managed in the right way, which for many people it is not.

YANBU

we can stick it on the list with holibobs and picky tea
