Local takeaway being CF’s to not communicate the wait time before I paid?

CatLover88 · 28/06/2025 17:20

Ordered an Indian takeaway (in person) and expected the usual c.10 min wait. I ordered and as soon as my payment went through I was told it would be ready in ‘half an hour’.

AIBU to suggest a delay of that length should be communicated upfront?

I wouldnt consider 30 mins a delay

ShittyHottie · 28/06/2025 17:22

Half an hour isn't exactly a long time. If it's usually ready in 10 mins they can't be cooking any of it fresh! I always expect it to be a 40 min wait at least.

Greenbird88 · 28/06/2025 17:22

30 minutes seems a perfectly reasonable wait.

CanOfMangoTango · 28/06/2025 17:22

What kind of restaurant can produce freshly cooked food in ten minutes?!

30 minutes is a totally standard wait time

AutumnLeaves91 · 28/06/2025 17:24

Yes YABU, that’s a standard wait

SlashBeef · 28/06/2025 17:26

Completely normal wait

CatLover88 · 28/06/2025 17:26

Fair enough! I stand corrected

I'd be very suspicious about the quality of the food if they said it would be ready in 10 mins. 30min would be the minimum for fresh cooked to order.

You could have asked how long it would take if you were in a hurry.

StrokeCity · 28/06/2025 17:31

I'd expect that wait when ordered by phone/online, but not in person

pestowithwalnuts · 28/06/2025 17:38

I thought you were going to say about an hour..
No 30 mins isn't bad at all.

GloriousBlue · 28/06/2025 17:40

Id expect anything up to an hour. 10 min unusual.

Lmnop22 · 28/06/2025 17:58

Good excuse to get yourself a G&T whilst you wait for it 😉

Edited

30 mins wouldn’t be enough to prepare a curry from scratch either, especially in a busy restaurant kitchen with orders for multiple different dishes. I always assumed they preprepared the sauces etc then cooked the meat/veg to order 🤷‍♀️ 10 minutes is just enough time to pan fry the meat/veg and simmer in the sauce for 5 mins, cook things like breads, onion bhajis, samosas, rice etc as long as you have the dough and sides prepared ready to cook.

AlohaRose · 28/06/2025 18:16

A 10 minute wait would worry me much more than a 30 min one! Do you really only normally wait for 10 mins for pick-up?

Ihopeyouhavent · 28/06/2025 18:18

Someone sounds hangry!! 😋

TequilaNights · 28/06/2025 18:20

You cant be serious!

Hedgehogbrown · 28/06/2025 18:26

It's not someone's dinner at home! 30mins is way too long to wait. 30/40 minutes is not the usual wait in a restaurant, you would be complaining at that length of time. Take aways are supposed to be quicker!

I'm surprised by these answers, our local takeaways always tell you how long it will be before you order and pay.

YANBU OP, I wouldn't expect to be waiting half an hour either.

I'd expect that wait when ordered by phone/online, but not in person

Why? The food takes the same time to cook regardless of the ordering method.

Presumably because when you order online, your wait time includes the delivery?
