To let everyone know I’m super proud of myself this morning

Lifelong arachnophobic here, can’t even look at pictures of them. Have had a few horrible encounters with the big house spiders over the years including one running up my chest onto my neck whilst I was putting a load of laundry away 😩

Since had my DD (2) and noticed she calls them “scary” even the cartoon ones in books etc. I’ve been telling her they’re not scary, they’re one of the planets creatures and have a job to do.

Took her in the bathroom to brush her teeth this morning and she shouted “look incy wincy scary” and I saw one in the bath which is a favourable size 😖 so I put her on her step stool and I knelt by the side of the bath, we counted his/her legs and talked about them eating flies and being good spiders then for the first time in my life I got a jug and piece of card and walked him all the way down the stairs and put him on a bush outside, DD in tow shouting “bye bye incy love you” 😂 yes I was shaking and felt like crying and it sounds so silly but this is such a big deal for me. I’m super proud of myself 😂

Very impressive!

Littlejellyuk · 28/06/2025 10:51

Well done 👏 I'm petrified. My dad always said to give them a nickname. So me and my son always call them Fred 😆

JustGiveMeWineNow · 28/06/2025 10:51

Well done!!! That must have been soo hard

My Gramps was a big fan of spiders during my childhood and teen years (lived with him) and unsure how I developed such an awful fear of them as he named them all Fred and would never see any harm come to them. He had 2 in his bedroom at one point and called them Fred 1 and Fred 2 😂

I'm very, very impressed! Well done you!

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 28/06/2025 11:41

Well done!!
I also want to train by son not to be scared so he can remove them for me!

Where2GoNext · 28/06/2025 11:44

Well done! It really is such an achievement! I'mstill not at that point yet, although I can tolerate knowing where they are and waiting for my DH to come and move them.

Tagyoureit · 28/06/2025 11:45

Im not keen on spiders!!

One of the poignant memories i have of becoming a single parent years ago was not the finances, heartbreak and loneliness, it was the having to pull up my big girl pants and deal with the spiders all by myself! I, too, was very proud of myself! 🤣

BebbanburgIsMine · 28/06/2025 11:47

Well done!

I’m still petfified of them, luckily for me though, DD is not and she’ll put them outside for me.

I give them names like Aethelburga, Cedric and the like, but it doesn’t help! 😂

Cadenza12 · 28/06/2025 11:47

Well done. I've managed to pass my aversion to both my AC. I've bought a little vacuum thingy for future evictions, haven't actually used it yet but it's nice to know that it's there.

TurquoiseTortoiseToastyToes · 28/06/2025 11:47

This is how I got over my fear of spiders, by trying to be brave in front of DC. I love them now! Would recommend Lucas the spider vids on YouTube for kids (not the crappy series, the original shorts)

MyKingdomForACat · 28/06/2025 11:50

That’s so cute telling DD they have a job to do ❤️

WhySoManySocks · 28/06/2025 11:51

My son takes them out for me.

WITH HIS BARE HANDS 🫣🫣🫣

DisforDarkChocolate · 28/06/2025 11:52

Have you ever watched the Spider old TV shows? They have a great 'Spider in the bath' song.

By the way you are incredible.

BundleBoogie · 28/06/2025 11:55

And so you should be. You’ve probably saved dd a lot of screaming and upset in the future. My dd adopted an enormous spider and called him Charlie. He lived in an ice cream box in her room for a while and she fed him dead flies 🤣

Oddsocksanduglyshoes · 28/06/2025 11:59

That is so good :) well done you!!

Growlybear83 · 28/06/2025 12:00

I’m very impressed and I’m not sure I could have done that. I’m petrified of spiders and daddy long legs.

I had a similar type of experience when my daughter was about 3. Our area is the stag beetle capital of the world and thst particular year they were everywhere. I was walking down the road with my daughter when I felt a huge thump on my chest and when I looked down, a truly enormous stag beetle had landed on my boob and was waving his pinchers at me. I didn’t want my daughter to be scared of bugs and managed to stay calm while she was laughing at the ‘naughty bug’. I told her that he must have got lost and we needed to put him onto a plant. He was clinging on for dear life and it took what seemed forever to dislodge him. But I didn’t squeal once 😆

Bonbon249 · 28/06/2025 12:08

Well done you! Especially well done for not passing your phobia on to your daughter! Absolutely right to be proud of yourself..

BlueJuniper94 · 28/06/2025 12:13

Well done, I wouldn't consider myself particularly scared of spiders but I'd still need big pants on to do that with a big house spider! Really well done :)

LittleGreenDragons · 28/06/2025 13:46

I'm very proud of you too!

It was my children too who made me put on my big girl pants and stop showing my fear every time I saw a hairy beast. I've now done such a good job of hiding it that my DC now deal with all spiders so I can resume my previous quivering mess much to their bemusement. Win/win 😂

afaloren · 28/06/2025 14:01

I am not really afraid of spiders but you are and that is genuinely impressive, well done OP.

I am terrified of daddy long legs and try to point the cat at them Grin

Yes, I've heard this before and think it's a good idea, although I haven't advanced from calling them 'hairy bastard' yet. Although to be fair, I'm actually OK with spiders, comparatively. I actually like some types. I don't like woodlouse spiders, or the giant house spider type. I do capture them myself though, but my dd takes them out for me, and lovingly settles them in a nook or cranny somewhere.

pikkumyy77 · 28/06/2025 14:13

Wonderfull!! Absolutely wonderfull!

Emmz1510 · 28/06/2025 14:59

Well done OP!
I used to be afraid of them. Not helped by my horrible (then, she’s lovely now!) sister taping a huge picture of a tarantula to my bedroom wall so I got the fright of my life when I went into my room one day. My fear seems to have faded over time and I tend to leave them alone without being too worried about them being somewhere!
Once when I lived in a flat on my own I left one trapped under a mug in the middle of my living room floor for full day because I couldn’t bring myself to take the next step and get a piece of paper or card underneath to take it out. I waited till my boyfriend visited and could put it out!
