To not really understand the need for people to drink alcohol all the time?

I really don't understand why people socialise and drink alcohol all the time, or go out specifically to get drunk and have fun, or all the "LOL Prosecco time!" At 11am in a Sunday. And people buying boxes if beers and 4 bottles of wine as part of the weekly shop.

I do drink, very rarely, sometimes for weddings or whatever.bit I really don't understand the normality of everyday drinking.

I know I'm in the minority, bit
..what gives?????

Because it takes the edge off.

My daughter is a waitress at a hotel and last night a very drunk man put his hand up her skirt. I hate drinking and I loathe drunk people

The edge off what?

A large percentage of people who drink do not become violent, whilst some of the most violent and dangerous countries in the world have low alcohol consumption. Its not a black and white issue.

BusWankers · 29/06/2025 17:52

Not what you think it does....

Because it could be 60 different reasons all contributing 1%.

Which makes alcohol the main and huge contributer to violence...

No it doesn't 😂😂😂

you think the 'other reasons' stop existing?

Sober people grope too. Alcohol isn't the problem here.

GonnaeNoDaeThatJustGonnaeNo · 29/06/2025 20:47

I loathe cricket but it’s not beyond my imagination or understanding to realise that others have different tastes to me and find it enjoyable.

Sexual assaults are also committed by sober men, probably most

It's harmful, it's antisocial, it's heavily marketed and it brings out so much nastiness in people. On top of all the above mentioned, doing it every day is quite decadent, to say the least.

Decadent 😂😂😂

not good for your health, but decadent 😂😂😂

Well that's ok then. I'll tell her not to worry next time everyone at a wedding she is serving at is drunk. It could be worse they could be sober

I'll tell her. Thanks for your sweet reply.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 29/06/2025 20:54

These days I don’t drink very frequently, and it does make life easier tbh.

But I still like to have the option to have a drink every month or two (as in when there’s an occasion when I want to, not to a schedule) because I still enjoy it.

To me it’s the ceremony of it, and sharing something together, but it doesn’t have to be alcohol.

Surely the advice is a sex pest is a sex pest with or without alcohol

Because it takes the edge off.

You need therapy then not alcohol.

No you are not, it was a complete culture shock for relatives of mine when they saw how early people start drinking in this country. Some hammered by 6/7 which was insane.

The airport as well 8am people drinking pints.

I attended a school fair 4-6pm. They were selling alcohol… at a school fair and when I politely declined the tokens to purchase alcohol I was met with a disapproving glare. Alcohol dependency is an issue especially when you can’t even get through a 2 hour fair.

It's not about 'getting through' 🙄🙄
At the Christmas School Fayre, I enjoyed a mulled wine or two. I enjoyed it, I didn't NEED it.

Quite right to tell her the man is to blame and not the alcohol.

AppleWhichWatch · 29/06/2025 20:57

BluntPlumHam · 29/06/2025 18:57

It’s the dependency of it. Why can’t you have a children’s party without booze? Why do you need a depressant to get through it? It also seldom ever stops at one glass of wine.

Are you At All familiar with the concept of enjoying something? Or do you only eat gruel & drink water??

Fine. 🙄 It's not my business why some people eat at McDonald's...but I'm allowed to have an opinion....

It's not my business why people decide to buy super expensive cars, but I'm still allowed to have an opinion.

That doesn’t mean the rest of us have to give a shit.

It's a highly addictive substance that is socially acceptable and extensively marketed.

Correct. Sad really that people have to drink to have a good time.

SunnyPlumOrca · 29/06/2025 21:17

Have you tried Gordons 0% gin?

It’s the dependency of it. Why can’t you have a children’s party without booze? Why do you need a depressant to get through it? It also seldom ever stops at one glass of wine.

You’ll still claiming people neeeeeed it, even in response to a post where I’ve pointed out that sometimes people just want it.

Do you never go out to a restaurant because you don’t neeeeeeed to, as you could just cook at home? Or never go to the cinema or theatre, because you don’t neeeeeeeeed to because you have a television? Or only ever buy yourself something nice to wear if your other clothes have fallen apart, because otherwise you don’t neeeeeeeeeeeed them?

It’s okay to have nice things without justification, just because you want them. I’ve had wine in the sun this evening and it was lovely. Of course I could have managed without it. I managed from when I got up at 10 until I opened it at 5. But I enjoyed it. Just like I enjoy a pudding after my main, despite it not being incremental to my survival.
