Why am I so scared of telling my hairdresser that I am unhappy?

No AIBU- but this is the most popular thread

I had a haircut and it was too short, but I acted like it was the best hair cut in the world. I delayed the follow up and explained what the issues where and she was so lovely about it.

But why am I so intimidated by hairdressers?

Because you're British?

If you're not British, because you live in Britain and have started to adapt to our ways.

If neither of these are true, I don't know.

Because they come very close to your head with a bladed instrument?

Edenmum2 · 26/06/2025 21:10

Because it’s awkward and there’s nothing really that can be done about cutting your hair too short.

I get it though - I always say ‘oh it looks amazing thank you’ no matter what state they’ve left me in 🤣

It’s not just you OP….

Because they can't stick the hair back on so no point in making a situation awkward

IsItBeesThoughLooshkin · 26/06/2025 21:49

I’ve complained a few times about colour and almost every time they’ve tried to blame me for their mistake. One guy even tried to argue that the gingery brassy tone I got ’suited my complexion much better’ than the neutral blonde I had asked for. Then they do the correction very begrudgingly and it’s super awkward.

Because our heads are vulnerable to attack?

FanofLeaves · 26/06/2025 22:04

She’s probably trying to gaslight you into thinking it looks amazing so you don’t complain. I’ve stopped going to mine. Twice now she’s just harped on about her cats and cut it too short right across the back. After I specified‘I don’t like it short on the back, please don’t cut it to the nape of my neck like that’

And then she’s done it and been all ‘oh look at that lovely shape! It’s suits you so much to have it shorter at the back and longer to the front!’

why do so few of them listen 😩

This is a good point, it a really unnecessairly complicated relationship I have in my life, and its all hairdressers not just this one.

I'd have no trouble telling my hairdresser if I wasn't happy, but I've been going to her for over 40 years. I suppose if people go somewhere like a larger salon and there's no established relationship it might feel different.
