Feel so useless (mnd)

I moved about 300 miles away from parents and within 3 months my father was diagnosed with mnd.
my mum is essentially doing everything to care for my dad herself. She has had support from mnd association. I just feel so useless and down about it. I feel guilty and just frustrated that I can’t help other than chatting on phone or occasional visit.
my dad falls often, can’t speak anymore and is so frustrated with it all.
i don’t know really what I’m trying to gain from this but thought it might help to share and hear from others.

I'm sorry to hear that. Could you arrange assessments with social services. A carer's assessment for your mum and a needs assessment for your dad.

Then perhaps assist your mum to apply for attendance allowance so that can pay towards your dad's needs. Occupational health can assess the property and see if any equipment would be useful.

Hi, yes he was diagnosed 18 months ago so all that stuff is happening. Thanks

Is there any way you can move back nearer to them? It must be difficult being so far away. Does your mum have any family nearby to support her? It can be isolating and exhausting caring full time, even for someone you love very much.

Really sorry to hear this. My dad has MND as well (diagnosed July 2022) and I live 250 miles away. It’s rubbish. I do all I can to help with logistics and admin but a lot of it is just “I have to go home and drum into my mother what needs to be done” so there’s lots of travelling.
