Reading levels reception

Dd is in reception, her school uses the Little Wandle phonics system. She’s currently on phase 4 reading books which I believe equate to yellow band books in other schemes. Is this an ok level for this stage in reception? Dd is summer born and her teacher says she’s doing fine but I don’t know how far behind the older children in her class she is or if I need to do more to help her. What level is/was your DC at this time in reception?

Don't worry about what others are doing! Its not a sprint race! Let your daughter read at her own pace and enjoy the love of reading.

There is a massive variation in reception on account of some of the children being 20% older, so there’s bound to be. Don’t worry about it, teachers will be well used to the disparity and will accommodate it.

Phase 4 in absolutely spot on for this point in reception. They'll do a quick recap of phase 3+4 in the first few weeks of year1 then teach phase 5.

You’ll do yourself a huge favour to stop thinking about this sort of thing in reception. Teacher says she’s fine = she’s fine.

Yes, my daughter was phase 4 little wandle in reception, and she was in top reading group. So this is absolutely fine
