To be scared of opening windows in this heat (TW spiders)

It's been hot here. The window to DS's room was open just before bedtime to cool it down.
As we were doing bedtime a MASSIVE spider ran across his bed. Fucking terrified me, though I tried to play it cool and reason with myself that it was a one off.
Today the exact same thing happened - huge fucking spider on the bed.
Now I'm too scared to open the window.

It's a floor bed on a low platform so considering buying a taller one though spidey might just climb that anyway.

In the meantime are there any sprays or something we can use as a deterrent??

(Luckily DS is not at all phased, just me freaking out)

Get a fly screen. I have noticed an increase in spider numbers as well.

It isn't hot any more where I am BTW.

Naunet · 24/06/2025 21:26

Peppermint apparently repels them, I can't vouch for it personally, but the internet does!

828Pax · 24/06/2025 21:27

I'm exactly the same. Terrified to open the window because of this. We have got an air con unit but as we have just moved this hasn't been sorted out yet so I have had to give in and have the windows open and every night I lay there freaking out about the spiders. I swear they are attracted to me 😂

We have nets over all the windows (due to an indoor cat but keeps all the crawlies out too)
They were quite cheap on Amazon, you just cut to size and attach with Velcro, can hardly be seen if the frames are white.

Thank you @Naunet - have ordered a vat of peppermint oil, next day delivery!
Considering bathing in it.

I buy spider killer spray from Amazon and spray it round the windows once a week - I haven’t had any spiders in the house yet this year.

Smilesinthesunshine · 24/06/2025 23:27

Raid is the best deterrent. You need to buy the red can of Raid from the supermarket. I used to have a terrible problem with them, but touch wood since I have been regularly spraying Raid around the house, I have barely seen any.

To feed on you or yours. Have you seen the size of their jaws?

Caerulea · 24/06/2025 23:35

Seconding the netting & velcro approach, stops all but the smallest of bugs including, but not limited to, bastard moths & shithead wasps.

Not sure there's any evidence on the peppermint thing unfortunately. I'd Google but can't risk seeing the inevitable photos.

JanetRobertaSnakehole · 25/06/2025 00:26

Indorex. I spray a little bit around the windows. Any spiders that do come in die pretty quickly, so we never see any running around the house.

Not a deterrent though, so some may consider it a bit cruel.

inthekitchensink · 25/06/2025 07:55

But house spiders live in the house - they don’t come in through windows as they are born, grow and die inside, so how does closing windows help? Asking as a total arachnophobe!

Ah fuck. You're right. Shit. What do we doooo??? I don't understand where they're living as I haven't seen them except running over the bed...

Maybe there's some kind of trap we can make, or get a lizard that'll eat them.

In the meantime I'm dousing the bedding in peppermint extract. Fingers crossed.

I used netting and velcro for years but now have proper roller fly blinds from a company called Streme. They are total game changer. No flies or MONSTROUS SPIDERS.

Lafufu · 25/06/2025 11:09

I read years ago that they don't like cloves so I tried putting clove oil on the curtains and it might have worked, or they might have just not come in? I switched to diffusers with clove in them because it seemed less random. My house smells like Christmas. I feel like I don't get as many. I don't exactly have a control group so this might all just be down to luck. I also bought one of those long grabber things, which makes getting the spiders I do find a bit easier.

Be careful with clove oil though, I melted some plastic with it 🤔

Noshadelamp · 25/06/2025 11:09

Could it have been the same spider you've seen twice?

You'll need to look around your son's room for any new webs, look in corners, behind the wardrobe etc
