To find it strange to hang a fake flower wreath on your front door at the height of summer

Buxusmortus · 23/06/2025 18:51

I have seen quite a few of these recently, in houses with actual front gardens.
It's the height of the flowering season, real flowers are everywhere, why on earth does a door need a fake flower wreath in summer?

I hate fake winter wreaths at Christmas but at least I can understand it more then, with bare gardens and trees and with it being more traditional to have a wreath at that time of year. Sometimes I make my own out of real foliage etc then or sometimes I don't bother with one.

A couple of people near me have had a fake flower one up since before Easter, surely they get dirty, dusty and faded, as well as looking generally crap.
It's a very strange thing.

Edited to say I accidentally appeared to have added a poll, did not intend to do that.

I deliver leaflets door to door. You can tell a lot about a neighbourhood based on the door decorations or absence of them.

That's interesting. Do you think there's a correlation between, say, plastic all seasons wreaths, real Christmas wreaths only or no wreaths, and types of neighbourhood, or types of housing within areas?

Some people are just into stuff like this. Personally can't be bothered but if ai had the time maybe I would think about this.
Assume the same people also have seasonal airfreshners, use scented dryer sheets and use zoflora every day. Some people are just into homey stuff like this I guess and if thats their thing then great as it obviously just makes them happy!
Its not my thing for many reasons but some people just like it

I think you're probably right about that. I don't use any of that stuff, I open windows to freshen the air and dislike artificial smells.

It’s trashy and one of the reasons why we have plastics everywhere, even in our bodies.

CloudBuster66 · 23/06/2025 23:00

Well OP, I've always got a wreath on my door and I don't care. I pick seasonal wreaths that try to avoid looking too artificial. Like another response, we used to have a lovely Edwardian original door with stained glass, but our tiny house only has a tiny plastic door so I like to make it look as welcoming and personal as possible (I also painted the PVC door using Frenchic)

Buxusmortus · 23/06/2025 23:00

Fake box balls dangling on a chain is just as odd as the plastic flowered summer wreath. Especially the ones that have fake flowers stuck all over them.

The first time I noticed a summer wreath on someone's door, I assumed that they had a death in the family. Now they're everywhere.
I bought a Christmas one, it is beautiful.

It's not odd is it?

They obviously think it looks nice. People have different tastes. It's in no way confusing

We get you think your taste is better than theirs, but there's nothing less classy than judging others decor or calling things 'naff'.

Mumblechum0 · 23/06/2025 23:05

I have seasonal wreaths too. Spring is dried flowers, summer is hand painted silk ones. Autumn dried hops, Xmas only, is fresh greenery.
IDKAF what anyone thinks, and front garden is full of flowers inc a large display of pots either side of the front door.

it makes me happy

You're right.

What really is odd, is that the OP (a grown woman presumably), is trying to persuade a bunch of strangers that she doesn't understaaaaand that different people like different things.

I agree it's up to the individual, but this summer fake wreath thing seems to be a new thing and I was curious why and where it's come from. Is it an Instagram type of thing?
From looking who has them it seems to be the same people that wrapped their whole front door in a gigantic bow at Christmastime, to make it look like an enormous present presumably. That's another new bizarre type of decor.

its not new....it was a thing (and wrapping your pictures to look like parcels) back in the 90's, it came over from the US

Kendodd · 23/06/2025 23:11

Fake plastic flowers/grass looks terrible! Those ball shaped plastic hanging things at the sides of doors where hanging baskets used to be, with plastic leaf and flowers, they've got to be the ugliest things though. What even are they?

then you assume wrong.

Of course I understand that different people like different things.
I simply wanted to find out the thinking behind the plastic summer wreaths or fake box balls as no one in my circle of friends and family has anything other than a real wreath at Christmas, if they have one at all. No one I know has fake flowers inside either.
I asked on mumsnet because I knew that there is a huge cross section of people on here, many with very different lifestyles to mine.

Like so many of the worst trends unfortunately.

Decorative wreaths originated in ancient Greece. Just because you don't like something doesn't mean it's automatically American.

Yawn. It’s totally an American thing though, it doesn’t matter where it originated. Do the Greeks still adorn their doors with tat for every single season or occasion? Spring, autumn, Easter, Halloween? Doubt it.

What do you mean 'thinking' behind it?

It's just an ornament.

You either like them or you don't.

I personally don't, but I'm not daft enough to think there's any kind of deep and meaningful reason why others do.

TaggieO · 23/06/2025 23:17

My child has profound special needs and he loved our Christmas one so much I let him have one up all the time. If people like you don’t like it, I frankly couldn’t give two fucks because he does like it.

I doubt it too. The ancient Greeks and Romans viewed wreaths as symbolic, they were worn on certain specific occasions or to bring about good luck at specific times, they weren't randomly hung on doors all year round.

OP posts:
OntheBorder1 · 23/06/2025 23:20

Christmas wreaths are generally made from plants which are around at that time of year, so if an artificial one is okay then why is an artificial summer one not okay?

Presumably people don't want to have to keep replacing the real flowers when they die.

Those are the fake box balls. No idea how they originated as no real box ball is ever hung up and dangled from a chain.

Mine is there to hide a massive scratch mark made by the previous owners. I'd swap the door but we're in a conservation area and it's stupidly expensive. I hate it too, if that's any help.

Well this sum it up, you have your answer OP, it's just an ornament. Some people just like hanging cheap plastic shite from China on their doors.

Lonelylonelylonely · 23/06/2025 23:26

What's the problem, OP? As others have said, different people have different tastes. They are not exactly fly-tipping in the front lawn and making it look unsightly.

Just because you don't like them, doesn't mean other people don't, just as if you'd go into their homes you may not like their decor.

Are you implying that people with wreaths (as an aside I don't have one, but I couldn't care less if others do) are of a lower social standing than you and therefore don't have as much taste?

Isn't this just any other trend like "Live Love Laugh" or twiggy and pebbly shit was a few years ago.

fount · 23/06/2025 23:26

🙄
People (usually) do it because they like the way it looks or at least prefer it to a blank door. Not much more mysterious or complicated than that. I don't bother, but I've known people who do, and they're just regular people. 😉Depending on the quality of the fake flowers used, some look okay to me. I must be dreadfully common...

whostheshithead · 23/06/2025 23:28

Well it's just nice innit.

I think it's weirder to be offended by a wreath tbh.
