Do you eat five portions of fruit/veg a day?

I plan my meals around what fruit/veg we have at home, so I consume my five fruit and veg most days!

I remember that target feeling impossible as a child, but I find it much easier as an adult.

Easily in just fruit alone. Currently doing a punnet of grapes, several plums and a couple of apples per day. I'm wondering if I'm overdoing the grapes.....

MidnightPatrol · 23/06/2025 11:01

Only if I am thinking about it.

It is very easy not to.

EveryKneeShallBow · 23/06/2025 11:03

In the summer, easily, in winter more tricky, but usually try and have soup everyday which helps.

HappySheldon · 23/06/2025 11:05

I definitely do and more. I'm Australian and the recommended amount is 7 portions so that is usually my mental baseline.

I work on 3 serves at each meal.

I always eat 3 serves at breakfast- yogurt, boiled egg and 3 serves of fruit, so that starts things right. A year or so ago I was having one meal a day due to illness and nausea and it was quite difficult then but I have a good balance i think.

never

I have IBS and most fruit and veg makes me ill, I can eat banana and have one a few times a week

our supermarket does small containers for cheaper in the snack section- might be an option? They are so addictive!

now more veg than fruit- never thought this would be the case but I adore snack sized cucumbers and raw green beans, spring onions (with cheese!) and broccoli!

Holluschickie · 23/06/2025 11:06

More. But only 1 portion of fruit per day. Prob about 6-7 portions of veg.

PhantomOTheParadise · 23/06/2025 11:10

Yes. I'd say I get about 12 portions in on average, but I'm vegan, so my meals are based around plants, and that makes it much easier.

SJM1988 · 23/06/2025 11:11

Never! 3 a day yes - but hardly ever 5.

Toilichte · 23/06/2025 11:12

I probably do 11 on a good day, 5 on a bad. A good day (usually about 4 a week) doesn’t feel difficult at all to manage, but on one of my “bad” days it’s a real struggle to hit the 5.

Dramatic · 23/06/2025 11:12

No absolutely not. I also have IBS and veg particularly does not agree with me at all. I do still eat it but probably only twice a week. I very rarely eat fruit.

CoffeeCantata · 23/06/2025 11:16

At the minimum. More like 8/9. I try to eat 30 different plants a week (easier if you include seeds and nuts).

I don't think it's difficult to do this but it can be more expensive.

StonwEd · 23/06/2025 11:19

Not much fruit as try to keep blood sugar balanced but I start every meal with veg, then have it as a main component of my meals too so easily achieve more than 5 a day. I should probably add some fruit in after savoury breakfast.

Newmeagain · 23/06/2025 11:19

@Dramatic have you tried sticking to fruit and veg that is less likely to cause ibs symptoms- e.g. sweet potato, bananas, cucumber, etc?

Sherararara · 23/06/2025 11:20

No

megatwat · 23/06/2025 11:20

cucumber, arrgh, one of the worst culprits for me, i would vomit if i ate it and also lettuce makes me up all night vomiting

FOJN · 23/06/2025 11:20

Easily, it's usually more like 10. I'm vegetarian so I think that makes it easier.

Also spices... when I discovered spices count I dramatically upped my intake of black pepper, paprika, cinnamon and turmeric!! ( do a roast chicken marinade which has orange juice, cinnamon, turmeric and paprika- sounds strange but it's really good).

Zippedydodah · 23/06/2025 11:21

Yes, at least five and often 8 or 9.

witchesfly · 23/06/2025 11:21

7 a day guidance here (not UK). I average 5 I reckon.

luckylavender · 23/06/2025 11:22

I start the day with a nutri bullet with 4 or 5 different fruit and spinach / kale. Anything else is a bonus.

usedtobeaylis · 23/06/2025 11:22

Yes, especially since I started taking Mounjaro. According to Nutracheck it's normally anything from 5-12 portions per day so even on the odd day I don't make it to 5, I feel ok about it. It's mostly veg rather than fruit. Trying to get it into my daughter is another story.

defrazzled · 23/06/2025 11:22

I used to - lots of fruit. I recently stopped eating all fruit due to blood sugar and it has massively improved my health. I eat 4-5 veg a day and a lot of grains/seeds but the fructose was causing me a lot of problems. Be careful if you have a family history of type 2.

Oooh, if spices count, then I'm well beyond 12 a day!

I’ve tried fruit and spinach smoothies before, I just can’t enjoy them at all. I’d have to force myself to consume them, so I don’t make them anymore.

It would be much easier for me if I did enjoy them, though…
