Do you eat five portions of fruit/veg a day?

Darkling1 · 23/06/2025 10:56

I plan my meals around what fruit/veg we have at home, so I consume my five fruit and veg most days!

I remember that target feeling impossible as a child, but I find it much easier as an adult.

Oh and i grow fruit. So at this time of years its cherries, raspberries, gooseberries, blueberries and strawberries from the garden. As we go through summer we will pick blackberries from the local hedges. Then we have plums & apples and pears on the trees but the pear tree is a bit crap and we get about 5 off it, the plum tree is a bit riddled with plum moth larvae. We eat a LOT of apple crumble.

Do you net your cherries?

I have just moved to a house with a cherry tree. I was so excited when I saw actual cherries, but they have all disappeared, before they even started to turn red.

I also discovered a grape vine. So excited for that. I hope they are good ones.

Yes, most days I'll have something like -
Orange juice
Banana, strawberries and blueberries (or similar) in yoghurt and honey for breakfast
Tomato, cucumber, pepper, lettuce at lunch
Carrots and a green veg at dinner.

I think carrots, parsnips, apples, onions, broccoli, easy peelers, a packet of frozen peas (I know it’s a legume) are inexpensive.

I don't think apples or easy peelers are cheap.

A pack of easy peelers is about the same cost as a chocolate bar. How is that not cheap?

What makes you think that there has to be an alternative purchase of something sweet, rather than it being too much to buy when already on a low income?

Exactly.

Skinanny1957 · 24/06/2025 15:05

I know I should eat more f&v but I concentrate more on protein. No matter how I try to think about it I probably only manage 2 portions a day.

I don't think chocolate is cheap either why have you compared it to that?! 😆

Look at how much pasta or rice you can get for a pack of easy peelers...

Yet in this country people have more than enough protein and not enough fibre , vitamins and minerals

Anotherparkingthread · 24/06/2025 15:33

I eat probably 7 portions of vegetables every day. Most of what I eat is plant based. I pair with protein eg eggs, chicken, protein pasta.

Carbs are more a treat. I don't eat bread/wheat anymore as it makes me feel unwell.

Take vitamin b supplements.

I don't eat any fruit as it's too sugary.

RedPony1 · 24/06/2025 15:35

Occasionally i might get 1 or 2 in a day, but mostly none....
i dont like many fruits, and i dont like veg without drowning it in gravy!

The only time i'll get more tan one in, is if i've had chance (rare) to make a chilli or something like that

PP said they didn't think easy peelers were cheap. I said the cost is comparable to a chocolate bar. It's not about being on a low income, it's about the fact that a bag of easy peelers provides lots more food for the same price as one snack.

ZiggyPlaysGuitarrr · 24/06/2025 15:57

Easily. I'm vegan so I suppose that helps, but I eat more than that without thinking about it.

Today for example:

Breakfast
Chickpeas cooked with chopped tomatoes, onions herbs and spices (almost like homemade baked beans) on sourdough toast - 3 portions

Lunch:
Carrot, cucumber and pepper sticks with hummus, handful of grapes - 4 portions

Snack:
Homemade smoothie ice lolly (banana, raspberries, strawberries, blackberries, apple juice) - 5 portions

Dinner:
Tandoori cauliflower, dal and rice- 2 portions

Total 14 portions

Totally agree and lack of fibre is becoming a serious issue in younger adults.

The majority of people get enough protein in their diets (even vegans), but fibre is sadly lacking.

£5 a week approx / person based on Asda prices for a persons UK weekly recommended

What’s protein pasta ?

I think it’s pasta made out of peas/pea flour or red lentils/lentil flour, that kind of thing.

I’ll have to have a look out for that

Tesco does a red lentil pasta. It’s in the regular pasta aisle/shelves. I eat it sometimes when I need to lower my wheat/gluten intake and I fancy a pasta dinner.

Yes. Have fruit on my breakfast usually (with yogurt, nuts, seeds). Eat a piece of fruit as a snack during the day. Try to have a good part of my lunch and dinner being veg or salad.I might have the odd day when meals are grabbed in transit and it doesn’t happen but that is rare! I aim for 7 rather than five and for the 30 plants a week goal in terms of variety - not sure how often I succeed with that tbh.

LadyLucyWells · 24/06/2025 17:13

I eat at work every day:

1 apple
1 banana
1 or 2 sticks of celery
1 or 2 carrots

Not sure how good this is.

You're probably right actually due to the quantities of each.
But still, 10.

If I ate the correct amount a day I would need to double dose the loperamide. IBS is a bitch really!

What’s protein pasta ?

It's pasta that isn't made using wheat (or as much wheat in some cases) and has a much higher protein content. The one I like is made by explore cuisine and is the edamame and mung bean fettuccine. Don't get their lentil ones, it's like eating boiled Amazon boxes lol. The edamame ones are good. I haven't tried a ton of brands but there's others as well. You can also get low carb pasta which as fewer calories and fewer sugars/carbs but I prefer the protein one as I do a lot of exercise. Spiraliser is also great, I spiraliser courgettes and pan fry and it's not bad as a noodle or spaghetti alternative so long as you have plenty of stuff to flavour it and don't overcook it :)

Meadowfinch · 24/06/2025 17:26

I eat 30 different fruit and veg every week which started out seeming difficult but is actually quite easy.
Post cancer I was told by the NHS it was the best way to boost my immune system.

Fruit for breakfast & snacks. Two or three veg with every meal.
