Do you eat five portions of fruit/veg a day?

Darkling1 · 23/06/2025 10:56

I plan my meals around what fruit/veg we have at home, so I consume my five fruit and veg most days!

I remember that target feeling impossible as a child, but I find it much easier as an adult.

Lidl also so something similar to Aldi.

Frozen veg can also be great for soups.

Agree with the ripen at home.
Mine never seem to ripen, they go from hard to gone off.

Have you got a garden @usedtobeaylis as a few fruit and veg planted out can save a lot of money.
We save loads on our berry bushes for example.

Just looked at Asda ££ for veg
The average £/100g is 22p
So for 4 portions of veg / day ( min) ie 320g that’s 70.4p / person
= £4.93 / week / person

Plus one portion of fruit = 5 a day

Ha, nowhere near! I survive on coffee, wine and diet coke. If I eat it's a sandwich or salad, biscuits or a piece of toast. If I had more time I would definitely try as I love fruit and veg.

More. Breakfast I have about two servings of technically fruit (tomato and avocado) and about two at lunch (salad). Then at least two more like three at dinner (steamed mixed veg). I like to bulk out my servings with lo cal veg. I also make vegetable soups.

Can I just point out that the botanical category of fruit is different from the culinary category of fruit. So tomato and acocado are not 'technically' fruit. They are either vegetables (a culinary category) or fruit (botanical) with an avocado actually being a berry.

Nobody is so restricted on time they can’t peel a banana but can pop the cork of a wine bottle.

Hmm... Today, cherries for breakfast, a few plums from the garden, then at dinner time, onion, pepper, aubergine, courgette, tomato, garlic, spinach.

Middlemarch123 · 23/06/2025 19:54

Yes, easily. Fruit with breakfast, huge salad with lunch, at least 3 portions of veg with dinner. About 7 portions minimum a day.

KPPlumbing · 23/06/2025 20:52

Yes. Today I've had:

  • Greek yoghurt with blueberries and raspberries
  • an apple
  • scrambled eggs with spinach and half a large avocado
  • a banana in a protein smoothie
  • a chicken tagine with peppers, butternut squash, corgette, aubergine, olives and lemon.
OldWomanInACardigan · 23/06/2025 20:55

Easily, particularly fruit.

Today -
B - a banana and some strawberries
L - baked beans (they count)on toast
D - sausages, mash, peas, carrots and broccoli

I’m convinced by the ‘30 different types of plant a week. Also by having my digestion work optimally, without any discomfort or inconvenience.

so, yes, I do.

Tessiebear2023 · 23/06/2025 21:57

I eat soup and salad for lunch everyday. I'm really lucky that I get free lunch as part of my work benefits. It's different vegetables each day, I've never had such a healthy diet in all my life! It's definitely made a difference to my health and digestion, and I don't crave junk food anymore.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 23/06/2025 22:13

Easily with veg. I'm not so keen on fruit, but DP seems to be convinced that it's the key to being healthy. Trouble that his taste in fruit is what I'd term 'old people' - bananas, apples, satsumas and prunes - the cheap and boring stuff, so I tend to avoid it altogether.

I don't like fruit that much on the whole, so I start the day with a smoothie. I do feel better with some fruit. This morning my smoothie had (among other things, so it wasn't gross) a green apple, a pear, a date and some spinach. I'm dairy free, so used coconut milk in it. There's always at least two fruits in a smoothie.

nightvisiting · 23/06/2025 22:21

I grow a lot of my own fruit and vege (and acknowledge the set up to do that wasn't cheap, so it's not that easy to 'just grow stuff'). If you have any dirt at all, or a pot, you can grow chard. That stuff is too easy to grow. It's only one thing but it's still one thing.

Fivetimesfive · 23/06/2025 22:32

Love fruit but haven't been doing so well lately with eating a variety of veg. Definitely have to improve there. I bought plenty of veg over the weekend to make soup so my plan is to have lots of smoothies, salad and soup to make sure I get my 5 a day.

IwasDueANameChange · 23/06/2025 22:45

Yes most days. Eg
Breakfast - overnight oats & a serving of berries
Lunch - at least 3 "salad" veg - peppers, cucumber, tomato, peppers, sweetcorn, carrot, celery, lettuce/leaves, beetroot, beansprouts (i will have protein/carbs too but always with salad)
OR - veg soup in winter - minestrone, pea & ham, lentil, leek & potato.
Dinner - always at least 3 veg not including potatoes, of which 2 are green. Eg green beans, sugar snaps or mange tout, asparagus, kale, spinach, peas, broccoli, courgette, swede, carrot, tomato, onions, mushrooms. Less often aubergine.

IwasDueANameChange · 23/06/2025 22:48

Oh and i grow fruit. So at this time of years its cherries, raspberries, gooseberries, blueberries and strawberries from the garden. As we go through summer we will pick blackberries from the local hedges. Then we have plums & apples and pears on the trees but the pear tree is a bit crap and we get about 5 off it, the plum tree is a bit riddled with plum moth larvae. We eat a LOT of apple crumble.

JaceLancs · 23/06/2025 23:05

Easily - I usually have fruit for breakfast
some type of salad for lunch - sometimes with more fruit
evening meal always has veg or salad
I’m average 10 different varieties a day person

Whippetlovely · 23/06/2025 23:12

No, I intend to eat more. I often take three pieces of fruit to work. They have a nice day out and then come back home again! I'm going to make more salads now as I can get more in. Eat veg with dinner but I need to eat some more fruit.

Ilovecakey · 24/06/2025 10:56

comeandhaveteawithme · 23/06/2025 13:24

Lentils/beans only count once a day, same with juices and smoothies.

Dont most things only count once? Like if you ate 2 apples it would count as one cos it's just apple?

zingally · 24/06/2025 10:59

Most days, yes. Some days, no. I figure it balances out.

comeandhaveteawithme · 24/06/2025 11:00

Ilovecakey · 24/06/2025 10:56

I mean that pulses only count once, IE: you can't eat lentils and beans (two different things) and it count as two, because pulses and beans can only be counted once.

And I also meant you can only count juices once, so you can't have an orange juice and then later have an apple juice, and count it as two, or you can't have a smoothie for your breakfast and then a glass of orange juice with you lunch and it count as two.

TheGirlWhoLived · 24/06/2025 11:09

I have between 3-10 veg in the day, mostly follow a veggie diet so not too hard to hit 5 regularly. Within the week I try and have a big variety of all plants for gut diversity though so I try and aim for 30 different ones

TheGirlWhoLived · 24/06/2025 11:14

Today:
banana am (1)
yogurt with frozen raspberries and blueberries. (2)
eggs and beans on toast with spinach and mushrooms (3)
pulled pork tacos with fresh guacamole, pico de gallo and side salad (3, perhaps 4)
Tru Fru strawberries … not sure these count but maybe (1)

summersun25 · 24/06/2025 11:29

No
i do manage the 30 plants a week plus a multi vitamin so I am ok with that
