I hired a gardener to do my garden terrace. By do my garden terrace I mean it was a mess. Weeds out of control, thistles. Sent photos to boss man- he said 300-400 pounds. So I was expecting £500 max. Team of four turn up. Look around, tell me it’s going to be £750. I said I sent photos and was quoted £3-4 hundred’ nope no way, you were quoted wrong. I felt very intimidated and paid :( skinny woman on her own. They only took one hour and a half to do the work. £750 I’ve been ripped off haven’t I? So annoyed that my police officer lodger wasn’t home to question it. Feel so stupid.

I’m a gardener, and sadly, yes it does sound like you’ve been ripped off.
A team of four taking 1.5 hours is only 6 hours work. I’d only be charging £150 for that .

£35 a hour equivalent is what I was recently charged. So two workers at £35 per hour each for a couple of hours. Sounds like you were well ripped off.

Thank you. I thought as much. My dad had told me how silly I am! Learnt a big lesson for next time. My savings for my holiday gone, just like that.

Can't you contact trading standards, or write a review?

What did they say or do to intimidate you?

Could you not just have said, 'Sorry I can't afford that, so you'll have to just not do it'?

And what does being skinny have to do with it?

Wherever you found them (Facebook, trust a trader website, etc) go in and give them a poor review for misquoting, intimidation, and over charging. Bastards.

There were three very large men who were rather stern and not very friendly at all. Plus a small boy who wasn’t intimidating at all but at about 14 years old was probably an apprentice to the intimidating career. I was on my own and didn’t feel that I could stand up to them at the time. I hope that in the future I will feel more confident to do so, but I will need therapy to get to this stage.

You can’t really say they intimidated you just because they’re large, they offered a price you didn’t like so say no.

Too late now OP but if anything similar comes up in future, phone the person who gave you the original quote whilst the workers are there. Before you agree to them starting,

Ffs I only mentioned being skinny because as a single lady of small stature I do find that I’m taken advantage of when it comes to anything house related….

Did you get a receipt?
I'd get in touch with the boss man, because there's fair bet you paid £750, they've pocketed £350 and given £400 to the boss man. Its his business they are ruining

BTW I totally get what you mean about men being intimidated, same with men in garages. They seem to like ripping women off.

I know that feeling, had a decorating company try to take the absolute piss. Got their boss on the phone before I let them leave, utter pair of bastards. He made them stay and sort it out.
