To have rather enjoyed listening to Radio 1 in the car this weekend?

I'm a bit of an old fart and don't usually listen any more. But today and yesterday while pootling about in the car, I switched over from R2 (they were playing Natasha Bedingfield 🙄) and spent some time listening to the fresh young DJs who I'm pleased to say didn't chat too much and played plenty of (not terrible) music. I didn't know much of it but it was pleasant enough, not all was new either.

The chat they did have was about choosing a car scent air freshener to represent the UK, a bit silly maybe, but they actually said during the discussion they were proud to be British. I know it's the BBC but I never expected to hear such a thing on a yoof service! Again, pleasant enough chat, and it was nice to actually not know who the DJs are, rather than on R2 where every other person is a well known face on tv 😴

So question is, am I getting more 'down with the kids', or is R1 simply going a bit more mainstream again??

The fact that you enjoyed it sums up the stations’s entire problem. Young people, who Radio 1 is mandated to serve, aren’t interested and don’t listen.

😄 poor R1 I'm so sorry! Although in the 90s my parents used to listen to it, we all enjoyed it.

What do young people listen to now?

Themselves

I’ve also switched back Radio 1 in the car. Greg James in the mornings is very funny and I prefer the music selection over Radio 2. I listen to Radio 4 sometimes for women’s hour and if the Archers isn’t on and Radio 6 probably has the best music program overall but can be a little beard scratchy and serious.

They don’t really listen to the Radio. Probably Radio one extra is probably aimed more at the youth. I used to listen to pirate radio when I was younger - I didn’t want mainstream.

Well if that means R1 goes back to some kind of listenable radio then I'm all for it!
