I've increasingly noticed that people are getting scruffier and scruffier in how they dress.

Some of the secretaries where I work come in, In trainers, band t shirts, coloured hair, loose fitting, cheap tops. I wouldn't do the garden in some of the outfits I see. They aren't typically patient facing but on occasion are. I think it really lacks professionalism to turn up scruffy to work.

Same for people out for an evening meal in jogging bottoms.

On Saturday we had sports day at school and every woman was in a nice dress and men in chinos / short chinos and shirts. Children all in proper PE uniform. It was so refreshing to see.

Pink hair doesn’t necessitate scruffy though does it? It could be beautiful styled and shiny pink hair. Or is it just self expression you don’t like?

Exactly. I dye my hair in what would be classed as a "more acceptable" brown, but as I'm going through the menopause it's dry and frizzy and when I get caught in the rain it looks like I got dragged through a hedge backwards. I definitely look scruffy then. But because it's brown and not pink that's ok, I guess?

I’m 43.
My hair is currently lilac but it was pink a few weeks ago.

I’m a senior academic at a university and will be in meetings with my vice chancellor tomorrow… with my purple hair 😂😂😂
I’m planning on wearing palazzo pants, a fuchsia jacket and funky trainers.
🤷🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️

I went to work on Friday in jeans and a t-shirt saying Just Let Me Staple The Vicar.

You’re not going to do very well in the sports race in a posh frock - shorts are the way to go!

Oh I don't know, haven't you ever seen footage of Princess Diana or the current POW running races at sports day?

I am sorry; I should have prefaced my post by saying that I was talking about people who are perfectly capable of completing basic tasks but don’t bother. I apologise if I touched a nerve and I am really pleased to see your post. I was speaking generally and there are exceptions to prove every rule.

No. Bullshit. You wouldn't have a clue if the person you're judging as not dressed professionally enough for you is disabled or not.

So you'd just quietly judge them anyway.

Boysnme · 22/06/2025 20:29

I have been getting more and more casual at work (fairly senior role but not often client facing). Currently my standard is jeans, t shirt, trainers and a hoodie. I do draw the line at a vest top but only because I don’t feel comfortable in them at work.

I had been starting to wonder if I should change the way I dress but this thread has reminded me that I can wear whatever I like so thanks OP for saving me from a new wardrobe I didn’t want!

CatamaranViper · 22/06/2025 20:29

OP, have you ever heard the phrase "don't set yourself on fire to keep others warm"?
I dress to keep me comfortable, not to impress you. My comfort is more important to me than your opinion.
I've worked places where I had to wear heals and dresses and blazers. It was hell. It hurt. It was hot. It actually made my job significantly harder.
Fuck that.
I do my job as well as I possibly can. I will be wearing either jeans and a band T or a casual jumpsuit to my son's sports day. Should anyone judge me for it, well that sounds like a them problem.

Fashion changes, maybe you're just out of touch now?

I agree. I think you might be behind the times.

I work in a school and have pink and green hair, and multiple tattoos..you’d shit if you saw me, OP 😂

DoctorRoseReturns · 22/06/2025 20:30

Ah the poshos are bored on a Sunday

Pink hair. The horror

And an afternoon tea with sports day on a Saturday? That's not normal 🤣

Gonners · 22/06/2025 20:31

Typo for "naice"?

Parker231 · 22/06/2025 20:31

Embarrassinglyuseless · 22/06/2025 20:21

I think you’re being given rather a hard time here OP. The tone of your post is a bit off - but I don’t disagree with the sentiment. The number of people wearing pyjamas or those giant fleece hoodie things (that make everyone look like a jellycat tardigrade) in the supermarket is genuinely baffling to me.

I understand wanting to be comfortable - but I get comfortable like that in the privacy of my home - when I’m out in public I like to have my public-facing armour on - and that means looking sufficiently put together / appropriately clad for the occasions that no one would notice my clothes. Jeans and a clean sweatshirt + brushed hair for the supermarket. A blazer and a tinted moisturiser if meeting someone for something slightly smarter etc etc.

I appreciate that being sloppily dressed doesn’t mean someone is unproductive. I genuinely don’t care what colour anyone’s chosen for their hair. But I do think appearing put together sends a message that you take your job seriously…

Senior Director in Corporate Finance . Have never worn makeup (or tinted moisturiser?) for work. Trainers are the standard footwear - suits and heels thankfully disappeared during Covid.

Either that, or OP is actually Amanda

Topseyt123 · 22/06/2025 20:32

Nice dresses?? Fuck that. It isn't the 1950s and I will dress for comfort. I was known to go to school sports days (which I hated) in shorts and a t-shirt.

Deebee90 · 22/06/2025 20:32

Let’s all get the summer dresses, hats and heels out shall we because god forbid if we rock up to sports day in a pair of shorts and tishirt we get called scruffy. People can wear what they want as long as you are showered and clean it’s fine. This isn’t the 1950s anymore. Hell I would do my garden naked in the current weather if I could get away with it. Doesn’t make me scruffy at all.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 22/06/2025 20:32

LadyKenya · 22/06/2025 20:22

It depends on the types of jobs you are applying for, I would have thought.

I wouldn't have thought it would matter to someone with a stick up their arse like the OP! I'm sure she'd instantly reject me even if I was never going to see a customer.

I'm looking for reception work so won't be having the pink hair, however flat shoes and no make up (other than concealer and lipstick) shouldn't make a difference as I would be perfectly presentable.

Parker231 · 22/06/2025 20:33

PractisingMyTelekenipsis · 22/06/2025 20:29

Oh I don't know, haven't you ever seen footage of Princess Diana or the current POW running races at sports day?

Bet they didn’t win (unless someone let them 🤣). Our parent races are highly competitive - house points are at stake so a dress definitely wouldn’t make the grade.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 22/06/2025 20:33

MargotTenenbaumscoat · 22/06/2025 20:20

Do you not know very many nurses?

You would be shocked at some of our consultants! The horror!

I have quite a few in the family. All wear uniform, yes. They aren't consultants, I'm aware that consultants don't wear uniform. No mental health nurses, someone has mentioned that mental health nurses often don't wear uniform. I can see the logic behind that.

Poynsettia · 22/06/2025 20:35

What angry responses -I think you touched a sore point OP -everyone so defensive of their scruffy look!

HighLadyofTheNightCourt · 22/06/2025 20:35

Welliesandtweed · 22/06/2025 19:51

No hats. I'm really surprised that anyone can't comprehend wearing a dress to the sports day. It can't be that unusual if almost everyone turned up in a dress without it being specified?

Nobody is turning up in a fancy frock at your bog standard state school sports day. But you know that Op don’t you? 🙄

TonTonMacoute · 22/06/2025 20:35

CleanShirt · 22/06/2025 19:34

Does it affect their work? Is their typing stifled by a band t-shirt?

Well, productivity is through the floor, top city firms are looking at replacing graduate positions with AI, and other employers want to ship in workers from India, so yes turning up for work in a band t shirt is probably not a great idea if you don't want to get thrown on the scrap heap any time soon.

Bedknobsandhoovers · 22/06/2025 20:36

If (and a big IF) is really is a thing then it may have come out of Covid, people WFH etc.

A negative is some peoples eyes, nothing to see here in others' eyes.

One of the positives out of Covid is a greater awareness of wellbeing. I'd rather concentrate on this - I can't get excited about what others are/aren't wearing for work.

I worked for 34 years with a slightly constricted neck - please explain why a tie is necessary. In some aspects of my teaching a positive health hazard.

Was I a better teacher for wearing one?

A 9 fingered boy I taught would have had a full complement of fingers if he hadn't been required to wear a tie. (He wasn't the user of a lathe he leant over to close a window.)

Dressing smart can have its costs.

Whilst I'm writing - what sort of school has a sports day on a Saturday?

Americano75 · 22/06/2025 20:36

Of all the things that I could get worked up about, this doesn't even crack the top 1,000.

SpanThatWorld · 22/06/2025 20:36

Welliesandtweed · 22/06/2025 20:05

Yes. Two actually as so many people took part. A Dad's race as well. We (parents) also got to do a sack race which was excellent fun, despite my apparent stuffy boring side which thinks you should dress well.

I'm genuinely surprised that I'm the only person that thinks like this. Therefore I must be in the wrong.

Just the one dad, was there?

Or was it a Dads' race?
