to expect seasoned MNers not to mutter "search the archives" then flounce off?

This is not in response to a particular post, just something which narks me.

Now, I am completely fine with regulars being sent to search for things when they ask a stupid/common question.

But I've seen a few instances when, for example, people will post asking for help and mentioning their 8 week old baby or something, and they get told to go and search the archives.

Might it not be the case that these folks are new/in need of support/in need of answers rapidly? The archives are huge and vast and ginormous.

I'm just being moany, aren't I?

YANBU.
I think it is very rude. It amounts to saying 'I can't be bothered to help you'.

(Obviously it has happened to me )

hifi · 23/05/2008 20:56

i think sometimes people want a quick response, so if mn can be arsed to reply they should.plus if we all archived there wouldn't be as many posts.not everyone would have seen the original so more povs.

At least I'm not alone in thinking it's a bit anti-the-spirit-of-MN.

I just worry that some poor stressed mum with a shrieking baby gets told to search the archives for help with her BFing difficulties or something. I probably shouldn't worry so much. In general.

Yeah tis a bit pissy.

I always try to link to previous useful threads that might be pertinant if needed.

Or just repeat myself endlessly.

I've always thought it seemed a bit harsh when I have seen this, but wondered if it was just me. Agree that there are kinder ways to point people to other threads for complex discussions and multiple POV, but surely sometimes answering the original question would be just as quick.

BarbaraWoodlouse · 23/05/2008 21:22

Does seasoned MN-er = salted cod?

Ambi · 23/05/2008 21:23

tis one of the reasons I never start threads.

ladymariner · 23/05/2008 21:23

I'm pleased this has come up because actually I would like to know - how do you search the archives???

IAteRosemaryConleyForBreakfast · 23/05/2008 21:24

Ooh you are not the only one. I think it is nice to know that if you ask something on here then someone will help you.
If you are on here so much that questions bother you and you can't be bothered answering then feck off to real life and leave us to it!

ladymariner · 23/05/2008 21:26

Thanks Rosemary, much appreciated

AMumInScotland · 23/05/2008 21:33

Considering the fact that it takes as much effort to post saying "search the archives" as it would to give a short answer to the question, it does seem rather harsh!

There are several MNers who revel in having been here since year dot, and I think its the MN equivalent of flushing the new girls head down the loo when she unknowingly sits in their seat in the dinner hall

cadelaide · 23/05/2008 21:39

Apart from wanting a speedy response, I also think sometimes people want to talk

SlartyBartFast · 23/05/2008 21:41

pees me off to, if you don't want to talk about it, since it has been done before no reason why others might not want to discuss it anew.

ButterflyMcQueen · 23/05/2008 21:42

agree with op

at least post a link to other threads

PatsyMoon · 23/05/2008 21:45

Totally agree with OP, particularly as some subjects just get hashed out ad nauseum and no-one says anything, because it's their "pet".

ConnorTraceptive · 23/05/2008 21:45

I agree (unless it's a question about baby pasta)
