I am not sure how else to name it. I refer to cases like America's most hated family -I just rewatched the documentary and it still shocks me to the core that those children live in that environment. For those who don't know, they belong to a "church" that basically supports the idea that if not part of the said church you burn in hell. They take those kids to demonstrations like war veterans and soldiers funerals, pride parades, put the children on street corners with big signs "God hate fags" "you will burn in hell" etc. All they do is spread hate and they are proud of it. I really don't think that even if those kids leave the church they will never have a normal life. They expose those kids to this hate, one child was hit in the head with a bottle dduring one of those signs displays and the mother was crying boohoo how can they hurt a child. But she is the one getting the kids to hold those disgusting signs. Why are they not removed from the family? Why is this allowed? On the other hand, if this would be a thing, where do you cross the line, as thinking about it children living in overly religious families are also exposed and raised into some kind of doctrine or mentality? Just thinking about it, what is your opinion? This is not a post to shame any religion, everyone has the right to follow whatever and whoever they please don't turn this into a warzone, be respectful.

I am going to stop here as you don't seem to understand me. No, I haven't heard. I stated this in 3 previous posts. And I grew ip.in Christian country. Many gay people are being murdered, but you were talking about Christian countries. But that doesen't mean is not out there. That's why I don't contradict you either.
Edit: sorry I realised you weren't quoting me. My post still stands though.

Edited

You're saying that you've never heard of a homophobic murder being carried out by Christians. You didn't know that many Christian countries have regressive anti gay laws or that Christians can preach against homosexuality. I also grew up in a Christian country and am perfectly aware of gay persecution.

Yes, I am saying exactly that.

Well now you know OP.

That is very patronising. I don't like the way you talk, I said more than once that ifnI don't experience that does not mean it does not happen. Why you keep arguing, you just want the last word? Have it, but drop the attitude, is nasty.

One of the saddest things on those Louis Theroux documentaries were the Westboro church picketing a funeral and obviously most of the public thought it was terrible. Someone went past in a car and threw a glass bottle at them and it hit one of their little boys - who had no choice but to be there.

Megan Phelps has an interesting book about her experience called Unfollow I think. She got helped out of her situation in the end by people on twitter. Fascinatingly bright lady.

I'm not being patronising, I find your naivety very surprising and I'm not surprised you're defensive.

Missanimosity · 22/06/2025 12:47

I am not going to answer to you any longer. Homosexuals are not being killed in Christian countries because the are Christians but because they are homophobes. You flex all you want with your knowledge, you are very vague and unable to come with those countries were homosexuals are potentially killed. I tried to give you the benefit of doubt but you are just trying to start a fight and clutching at straws. Is ok, no issue. Have your moment, there is place for evrybody. Peace.

Why are you surprised by my naivety when I already mentioned myself that I don't have experience with Christianity beyond Europe? Did you even read what I said?

They can be both Christian and homophobic OP. There are many Christians who are against homosexuality because of their faith. There are Christian majority countries that have anti lgbt laws because of their faith. The facts are there should you wish to find out for yourself.

It's called spiritual abuse.
I translated some documents a couple of years ago for a religious organization which was outlining the different types of abuse which can occur in religious setting. Spiritual abuse was one of those.

I did not know this exists. Thank you

Oh, yes, I remember now, and she hid the death of her kids for quite some time. I mixed them up in my head

If you think about it it’s appalling that there are so many similar families/situations that you can even get them all mixed up with one another! I think the internet has most definitely opened our eyes more to all of this going on. I wonder - particularly with the families like these who monetise on YouTube by using their kids in this way - it’s almost a what came first, the chicken or the egg? Like, would these parents still have been abusive in the first place, without all this, but just in another way? If that make sense?

Internet and quality journalism. I mean , would we even know if people like Theroux wouldn't be investigating and showing to the world? And the fact that he followed this for years and came back years later shows the dedication which I admire so much.

Absolutely. Have always loved his style, it manages to draw people in more without them even realising sometimes - particularly where he’s doing interviews with particularly awful subjects, such as the Westboro Church, white supremists etc

Lori Vallow Daybell was convicted of murdering her two children after she became convinced their souls had been taken over. However she continued to collect child related benefits etc until a huge hunt found the remains of both children on her new husbands property. He’s convicted too. They are both also convicted of killing his wife. Lori has just been convicted of murdering her ex husband and attempting to murder her nieces husband. Massive personality disorder and a real nasty piece of work:

She stepped away from the Mormon church to a splinter version which was cult like.

That was quite some chain of events! I think right from the start it was - unfortunately - going to end up the way it did. How she thought she was ever going to get away with it confounds me!

Her and the Franke one; that poor little girl who wouldn’t come out of the dressing room/closet for hours because she was so scared of the adults in her life. The police officer who was sat with her for hours, just letting her take her time, was exactly what she needed. Seeing the interview with their father afterwards as well was fairly shocking, too! All those adults completely failed those children, over and over.

Whatwaswrongwiththatusername · 23/06/2025 10:19

So, I’ve just seen www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/crenzwyvpn1o This article, which, although the daughter was legally an adult in this case, is very similar. Wondering if conspiracy theory has become the new religion here? And if so, it doesn’t bear thinking about a whole new generation of kids now born in to families like this. It’ll likely take a few years to see how this affects children I think. With the massive upsurge stemming from covid (in particular) I think this could become very worrying, if it isn’t already. Of course, a lot of these conspiracists (and yes, I’m probably generalising a little) do tend towards the conservative right where religion will also still be a part. I guess the religious aspect more dominant in parts of the US so far.

(sorry, I did use the little link thing so not sure why it also posted the url as well)

Uganda did talk about the death penalty for homosexuality about a decade back but decided to down grade it to life imprisonment due to international outrage.

I don't know how he can stand there and listen to their bulshit, I am not so strong. But yes, he did great, obviously a lot of training. A bit like interogators who stand there for hours and listen to bulshit and agreeing with them just to give them enough rope to hang themselves with.

The book is here so looking forward to read from her perspective (the daughter who escaped). Apparntely she was only 5 when she started picketing. Glad to see she came on the other side.
