No-one is saying they’ve conspired with Trump or anyone else, that would be ridiculous. But government uses major news as a cover to slip difficult or unpopular things in under the radar while the public is too caught up in events to notice.
On 9/11 a Labour aide called Jo Moore advised the government that ‘It is now a very good day to get out anything we want to bury.’ She was implying 9/11 was a good day to bury bad news while the public were too caught up in up in events to notice - in this case a change to local authority pensions. She later tried to use the day of Princess Margaret’s funeral in 2002, in the same way.
As recently as earlier this year the DWP very quietly published a series of damning disability benefits related reports at 4pm on Friday 2 May, on the eve of a bank holiday and on a day when the news was dominated by the results of the local elections held the day before.
