To wonder if I’m in a parallel universe - Snow White

The new live action Snow White film got universally panned and made out to be a “woke” disaster.

Finally got round to watching it with DD and I’m a bit confused what the fuss was all about.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s not the greatest film ever made. In fact, it’s probably below par, and the dwarves lack the charm they had in the original. But it’s no worse than any other Disney live action remake. Lead actress is perfectly good, with a great singing voice. DD watched it all without complaint.

I appreciate opinions on films differ but it’s hardly the horror show I was led to believe. Am I an outlier, or do a lot of people talk shit?

the controversy wasn’t about the film itself, but more the things that the actress had said on twitter off camera I believe!

BlueRin5eBrigade · 21/06/2025 19:02

My girls and I loved it.

She, snow white, pised off some important people. She posted "and always remember, free Palestine" on social media after the release of the film's trailer. That's probably why it tanked.

RayOfRainbow · 21/06/2025 19:04

Tbh I went open-minded with the kids, having not yet read reviews, and I thought it was a bit crap. It was all a bit wet, just not engaging and by halfway through I was fed up of the lead actresses constant chin out mouth half open intent expression.
I think it was a combination of her comments, and the fact there was nothing in the movie to really redeem it much. If the film had been better maybe it would be less highlighted?
For example, even with Ariana’s gaunt frame to gossip about the movie wicked did have some magic. Snow White didn’t have the magic

ThisOchreScroller · 21/06/2025 19:05

Nobody likes Rachel Ziegler. Unfairly so, I think, although she does herself no favours in interviews. See: headlines about Evita on the West End at the moment, where she goes outside to sing the main number on the balcony where all the paying attendees sit inside like mugs.

Gepl · 21/06/2025 19:06

It got one star in the Guardian, who I doubt had any issue with the lead actress’ comments.

But surely that’s the director’s decision?

I went with my adult DD and we enjoyed it, perhaps I’m easily pleased.
However I did think Gal Godot stole the show as the wicked stepmother and she definitely was the fairest of all.

Blarn · 21/06/2025 19:09

I didn't see anything about it being woke, just that it was shite.

Yes, that's why I said "unfairly" and pointed to the current headlines who only mention her as being at fault.

whitewineandsun · 21/06/2025 19:11

Nah, it was crap. Especially the dwarves. And absolutely no chemistry between any of the actors. Deserves the bad press.

DavidBrentsGuitar · 21/06/2025 19:12

I think some people felt the casting was purposefully chosen from an ethnic minority that doesn't in any way represent the original character. I guess some people feel it's a big finger point at 'right think'. Personally, I don't really care.

RaraRachael · 21/06/2025 19:12

I think there was annoyance from the dwarf community that the dwarfs had been erased from it and replaced by CGI creatures therefore doing dwarf actors out of work.

ThisOchreScroller · 21/06/2025 19:13

A lot of the criticism I saw was that it was really ugly to look at and had a bad script.

Cecilly · 21/06/2025 19:17

I thought the lady that played the evil queen was pretty wooden.

Definitely agree. I was surprised.

steff13 · 21/06/2025 19:23

I haven't personally heard anyone refer to it as being "woke." I've heard it was bad, poorly written, and the star isn't likeable, etc. Saying it's no worse than any other live action Disney remake is really not saying much considering they've all been fairly terrible.

user2848502016 · 21/06/2025 19:27

I haven’t seen it but my DD10 liked it, DD14 said it was “garbage”.
I quite like the live action beauty and the beast and Aladdin though

Daisydiary · 21/06/2025 19:28

I thought it was ok for a kiddie movie. Didn’t get all the hype, either way.

Namechangean · 21/06/2025 19:28

I agree, it was fine. But then again I am woke and proud of that so I might not be the best judge

Eminybob · 21/06/2025 19:28

I thought Gal Gadot was terrible.
Rach z was better but the film was pretty poor overall. The ending was ok.

But I’m shocked to hear this about Evita and the balcony. So what are the paying audience doing while this is going on?

Eminybob · 21/06/2025 19:30

And is it every performance or a one off for a publicity stunt?

SpidersAreShitheads · 21/06/2025 19:32

From what I understand it was multiple things.

The dwarves were CGI rather than employing actors - allegedly done because it’s not appropriate to cast for dwarves (but the decision had the opposite effect).

Zegler is of mixed descent (part Colombian) and while beautiful (which Snow White is supposed to be) she doesn’t meet the literal book description of “skin as white as snow” so it’s an awkward casting.

Zegler caused a lot of controversy by slating the original Snow White film, calling the prince a “weird stalker” and saying it didn’t portray women in roles of power well. She said the story needed an overhaul and to be made woke (sorry, I hate that word but it’s the one that was used). If she feels so vehemently about the traditional fairy tale then maybe she shouldn’t have taken the role? It’s like someone from PETA auditioning for Cruella de Ville 😂🤷‍♀️

There was also some issues around an interview Zegler did where she was vocally pro-Palestine and allegedly raised the subject during the interview quite forcefully - it was a joint interview with Gal Gadot who plays the Wicked Queen. Gal Gadot is Israeli, and ex-Israeli military too.

So that was the background, and then apparently the film was a bit shit too.

I’ve not seen it, don’t have an opinion on the film. But that’s the background and why it’s caused such bad press (rightly or wrongly).

They watch it on video screens. And tickets are not cheap…..

That wasn't her decision though, in fairness.

I think she gets unfair rap. Don't get me wrong, that interview she did on Snow White that kicked it all off was obnoxious, but it's not her fault Disney made a shit film.

And while the self conscious lefty politics grates, all of Hollywood appears to be like that these days.

She's a talented performer, but she's become a bit of an easy target now. I hope she can turn it around.

Bingbangboo · 21/06/2025 19:38

We enjoyed it. I went expecting it to be rubbish and I was pleasantly surprised. I agree that it would have been better if the dwarves were actual actors. Overall it was much better than many of the other recent Disney offerings I thought.
