More of a vent than anything.

I work at a riding school who do weekend pony clubs in the summer, and a longer one over the holidays.

We match the riders to their ponies based on height, weight and experience/temperament.

One of my group is very overweight. Three stone heavier than her mother said she is on her form. She cannot ride the pony assigned to her or any of the ponies. She needs a horse. Which would have been fine if we knew when she booked.

Now I'm desperately trying to find a suitable mount before the 3 o clock hack so I don't have to tell this sweet girl that she is unable to go on the hack due to her weight.

WHY do people do this? Just be honest ffs! If we had the right numbers, she would have been given one of the horses but now there is no one suitable left.

Yes, what a lovely kind thread this is...

"13 stone at that age!"

"it’s sad really but blimey surely the mother realises"

"At her age... It can't be easy for her, kids that age can be vicious."

"Maybe mum thinks that’s her weight, guess she is in for a shock tomorrow when she picks up. Perhaps it will be the start of some changes so the girl loses some weight, as 13 stone at 5ft ish is very overweight. But that’s up to her"

"I don't understand all this tip toeing around fat people."

"It's more than overweight, especially at such a young age. It's very obese and the mother needs to get on top of this."

"(this bitch mother owes me big)"

Oh do get a grip. If you're fat and unhappy about it, lose some weight. But don't drag down a very nice, wholesome thread with your negativity and nitpicking.

That’s really interesting. I wonder if you can explain this: out on a walk a couple of weeks ago, we passed by a field with 8 horses, all adult wirh one foal and all of them were asleep! It was about 1.00 in the afternoon, not really hot, it was cloudy. One opened its eyes as we made clicking noises at them and just looked doped! Strangest thing I’ve seen.

Imagine a new mum with her breastfed baby and them both having a sleepy afternoon kip, that would be considered normal. Or a cat and her kittens.

I imagine a horse is no different.

They like to nap. If you look on YouTube there s a comedienne called Hayden Krystal (I think)whose horses keep napping and her neighbours think they're dead. She and her horses are really funny. I'll link her when I get a second.

Dexter! “Dexter, you are the inspiration for pinada”. PMSL. Thanks for my next few hours viewing pleasure OP.

No, she didn't put in a lot of extra effort. She remembered a horse.

I genuinely hope you don’t feel like this all the time, inserting yourself and your obvious anger into a lovely story about a kind person trying to help a child ride an appropriate horse.

Be kind to that girl - I was 13 and 13 stone. I had to move to horses from ponies at a young age and it was quite sad. I understand your frustration though, mum maybe doesn’t know much about horses and thinks they will be fine with that weight and probably a bit of denial about how heavy her daughter actually is. We can all be guilty of that….

The OP has been nothing but kind to the child, and to the horses.

You have handled this beautifully (read your other posts) & sensitively to the girl & I MASSIVELY applaud you for that. Thank you!!!

How do you no when she’s not arrived yet? The mum may have guessed the weight, I have no idea how many stones my kids are, maybe add an option to phone and speak to someone if people aren’t sure of the weight thing

It’s almost as though bathroom scales don’t exist. If you’re signing your child up to riding lessons, weight is important.

Rosscameasdoody · 22/06/2025 16:54

MasterBeth · 22/06/2025 13:34

How can you possibly know that?

Because there are bathroom scales. And weight is important in horse riding. Sounds go me as though mum is embarrassed by her DD’s weight and feels like It’s a reflection on her.

Are you like this in real life or is this just an online persona ? Either way it’s most unpleasant. Why are you so palpably angry and why are you repeatedly projecting that anger into an enjoyable thread ?

GintyM · 22/06/2025 17:01

YANBU at all—this is beyond frustrating. You’re not being cruel, you’re trying to keep everyone safe, including the ponies. It’s not about judgement—it’s about physics.
People need to realise that fudging weight on a form doesn’t just create admin stress—it risks the wellbeing of the animal and puts pressure on staff to scramble for last-minute fixes. You're doing your best to avoid disappointing a lovely kid because a grown adult couldn’t be honest on a form. Maddening.

YorkshireWelsh · 22/06/2025 17:12

Right. I’m doing it. I’m going back to riding lessons! I last rode a horse in 2014 and last took a lesson in…erm…several years before that(!). I always planned to go back when I could afford to, then thought I’d wait until DS was big enough to try it (as DH is terrified of horses), but DS doesn’t seem interested / is going the same way as DH, so what am I waiting for??

Have spent a happy couple of hours researching local yards - any chance you’re in Yorkshire, OP??

0psiedasiy · 22/06/2025 17:13

Your ride sounds brilliant so glad you managed to sort something out. I have some great memories of riding school, probably the ones that didn’t go to plan according to the teacher (one of the horses lay down and refused to get up- he wasn’t hurt, or when it started raining cats and dogs and we had to go really fast back to the stables-probably on a trot but to me it felt like we were racing)

Anyahyacinth · 22/06/2025 17:21

Balloonhearts · 21/06/2025 18:33

Fuck my life. We swung it. It was an absolute shambles but we swung it. Really couldn't bring myself to leave her behind so we had to get creative.

Went back to talk to her and she was busy making Benji an extra deep bed. To cushion the hoof abcess that he doesn't have. Thought: Nope, can't do it.

So. I was supposed to be ponying the youngest, dc6 who had never ridden out of the school before on the quietest pony. I also had a 12 year old who is quite experienced and a 9 year old novice.

So I had dc12 on her own pony, stuck the 9 year old on the quietest one and sandwiched her in the middle, littlest one on a slightly sassier but tiny pony and had dc12 pony her along.

I went up to the far pasture (this bitch mother owes me big) and fetched my old partner in crime who taught me to ride. He retired 4 years ago and is no longer ridden but technically can be, there's nothing wrong with him, he's just getting old and creaky and deserves to retire.

Unfortunately he is now too fat for his tack. After discovering this, I briefly considered drowning myself in the rain butt but couldn't leave the minors unattended.

So I stuck her on my intended mount, James, the big fucker. We were quite a picture. My tubby arse riding bareback on a geriatric horse, ponying along a mountain of ginger outrage with slightly wobbly child on top, periodically swatting at him with a crop to stop him biting me. (He hates being ponyed, bites everyone in reach.)

Luckily Major Tom (old horse) wasn't too lively, he hadn't been ridden or even left the pasture for the best part of 3 years so I was slightly concerned about imminent death by horse eating carrier bags but he was actually fine. Slightly baffled at this turn of events but willing, keen and well behaved as ever. We were very late back but 🤷‍♀️.

Girl was chuffed to get to ride such a huge horse. No idea what I'm going to do tomorrow but don't want to say anything to the mum until after, in case she kicks off.

Bless you for being kind, this could have been a big hurt that child felt her whole life...your good heartened ways swerved that. Bless you

No, she hasn't. Quite the opposite.

She doubled down it.

Yes I fully stand by grumpily calling this mother a bitch.

KellySeveride · 22/06/2025 17:27

Master Beth you do realise that a severely overweight child’s parents could be pulled up for neglect?

It is neglectful not to keep your child healthy. 13 stone at 5ft tall at any age is obese, when I was 13 stone at 5ft 8 I was well into the overweight category!

SpidersAreShitheads · 22/06/2025 17:29

Please could you pm details of you riding school or if you have any recommendations in the Gloucester area I completely trust you recommendation. Not media long time poster sometimes lurker your the perfect teacher.

Waves to local person! 😊

I’m in Tewkesbury!!

There’s a riding place near the Four-Mile pub - down the lane opposite - that I took DD to a few years ago. That was lovely! I haven’t been there for a while though but might be worth checking out?

MasterBeth · 22/06/2025 17:33

@KellySeveride How is it any of your business and why has it become the subject of this thread?

The OP was annoyed that the weight given on the form was wrong. She said:

She cannot ride the pony assigned to her or any of the ponies [.....] which would have been fine if we knew when she booked

But the rest of the thread have decided it's not fine. It's become a pile-on on the mum.
