I dry my laundry in my garden and my neighbour is really unhappy about it

I really don’t think I’m in the wrong here but keen for opinions which I will take onboard if I come off as unreasonable.
I live in an end-terrace house. Neighbour is attached to me. I peg my washing out to dry on good days. We are a family of four, lots of laundry and I much prefer to peg out than use the (expensive and environmentally unfriendly) drier. My neighbour HATES me for drying my laundry in my garden. Relentless comments about how she can’t enjoy looking at her garden from her bedroom window because she can see my (clean) laundry. About how it’s spoiling her enjoyment of her garden. Why can’t I just use the drier, for everyone’s benefit (not mine, see: bills; climate change…). It’s bad manners to dry ‘smalls’ outside - her husband might see my ‘undergarments’ … honestly it’s relentless. I recently received a birthday card from them (very kind, and appreciated) which said ‘Happy Birthday WashingWoes, we really love seeing your washing on the line, have a lovely birthday’. Please reassure me that I’m normal and neighbours are barmy?

Maybe someone else can post the cartoon where 2 women admire "the latest in solar and wind technology": a clothes line... cos I can't. 😳

Erm I am well aware I’m really in the minority here and also nuts but I don’t want to see my neighbours undies outside the window either 😂 for some context - we’ve spent years renovating a really old terraced house into something amazing and I’ll be really honest - and probably cause great offence - by saying our neighbours house is in a bit of a state. Their laundry outside doesn’t help and is not inkeeping with the rest of the row of houses which have been renovated in the last few years. The area has been gentrified a bit to be honest and when other houses have updated the architecture and materials I do think you have a responsibility to upkeep the look / feel of your neighbourhood and that does mean having good standards. Our council has also done a lot of work to improve the ‘feel’ and look of the area which was quite tatty in parts. I suppose I feel it’s everyone’s obligation to keep the area nice and I don’t think loads of washing hanging out is doing that. Occasionally I say fine but not every day and not all your clothing. I do sometimes dry washing outside on a sunny day but it is deliberately hidden from view of the main road nearby and also we have installed a large high gate that stops the back patio area being visible to the neighbouring terrace. If you had more space I think it’s acceptable but if your row of houses is terraced as is mine, I think you should try to be discreet about laundry and bins. Otherwise it ends up looking rough tbh.

Get a grip.

Cactusmumma · 20/06/2025 18:15

Unless your neighbour can afford a country estate set in acres of her own land she will just have to suck it up like everyone else does. Your house and garden, your private place. It’s not like you’re holding endless late night BBQs or late night hot tub parties. She should count herself lucky, at least washing is quiet.

LittleBitofBread · 20/06/2025 18:15

She needs to get a life. If she goes on about it again, tell her to put a sock in it (bad pun intended).

Bonbon249 · 20/06/2025 18:16

I've seen a post on Facebook that someone had hung out their laundry in such a way tho shadows spelled T.W.A.T. That should get Hyacinth Bucket clutching her pearls!

MyDeftDuck · 20/06/2025 18:17

Whatever next?!?!
Your neighbour is a total batshit crazy moron! Who in their right mind dries washing indoors when the weather is so lovely. I understand that some HOA’s in the US don’t allow laundry to be dried outside, which I also think is bonkers but here in the UK……….keep on pegging WashingWoes.
Actually, I’d be tempted to peg out all my saucy undies regardless of what the neighbour demanded.

Fairyfae · 20/06/2025 18:19

You can buy funny tea towels on amazon and face cloths saying "beaver cleaner" 🤣🤣 have a look op and buy them we are getting some to peg out for our nutcase neighbour ha

Oatshakenespresso · 20/06/2025 18:19

🤣🤣🤣🤣 they are nuts. I’d start buying really funny things to hang out. Like giant novelty size knickers

Grinchybinchy · 20/06/2025 18:21

Ooh I’d be buying pvc knickers from Ann summers!

Grammarnut · 20/06/2025 18:22

Your neighbours are peculiar. Hanging out washing is fine. Keep doing it for the planet's sake (maybe) and certainly for the sake of your bills.

Rosscameasdoody · 20/06/2025 18:23

Tell her your garden and how you use it has no bearing on her enjoyment of her own garden, and that you will continue to hang out your washing in good weather, regardless of what she thinks. Hanging washing is good for your washing and good for the environment. Also tell her that with electricity prices as they are she’s totally batshit to use a tumble drier when you don’t need to so she can fuck right off and mind her own business.

Mischance · 20/06/2025 18:24

Mad as a hatter! I like the idea of hanging out something for to get her teeth into ..........

Cuwins · 20/06/2025 18:26

Thanks reading this reminded me I need to put washing on, no outdoor space here to dry it and no tumble dryer so everything is just dried on airers or radiators.
I would love to have an outside space to dry in

Grinchybinchy · 20/06/2025 18:21

Or a full blown gimp suit with a tea towel hung next to it spelling out your ‘safe word’ !! Hopefully that’ll shut her up for good.

SmudgeButt · 20/06/2025 18:26

You're normal. She may or may not be.

I heard about something similar years back where a middle aged woman started complaining about he younger neighbour pegging out her laundry include bras and the rest. The younger woman just figured that she was jealous and ignored the situation. At some point they got talking it and turned out that the older woman had had a mastectomy and seeing the bras was like a constant reminder. So basically sometimes it's not what you think is the problem.

Or she's a bitch.

Oldraver · 20/06/2025 18:28

AngelicKaty · 20/06/2025 14:47

Ooh does that actually work? Hadn't even thought of that. Thank you, I'll give it a go. 😊

Our tumble dryer has a short warm cycle specifically for softening after line drying

I vote pegging out washable sanitary towels

Sunnygin · 20/06/2025 18:29

Shesellsseashellsnotinmystreet · 20/06/2025 13:35

Buy 2 packs of huge pants. Write
BUGGAR OFF.
and hang them for her side to view...
Honestly I hope you never engage into chat about such rubbish..
If buy a gimp mask and hang that out.

Brilliant 🤣😂

DiscoBeat · 20/06/2025 18:32

1% think YABU. Must be the neighbour. She is making no sense so it's Ok to ignore her!

To be honest, her husband sounds a bit creepy noticing and eyeing up your underwear. I would start making jokes back about that. Reminds me of the Father Ted episode where all the Priests get lost in the ladies underwear department in a department store!! 😆

lifeonmars100 · 20/06/2025 18:33

Vile, horrible and frankly bonkers woman, and as for that birthday card! She needs neighbours like mine, currently their back yard contains two broken down buggies, a rusted bbq, various over filled black bin bags that tend to split and spew their contents on the ground, this has included dirty nappies and rotting food, Their fence has fallen down so the mess is visible for all to see and it sometimes spills over to the communal alley way. This is wny I cannot use my outside space, she would collapse and never recover if she had one day of having to put up with my neighbours

Goodlorditssummer · 20/06/2025 18:34

Your neighbour is a loon, ignore her. Whatever the total opposite of a domestic goddess is? That’s me. I hate all things domestic. EXCEPT hanging laundry out on a sunny day! When the weather is right and you can wash and dry three loads in a day? Total achievement, pinnacle of being an actual grown up (I’m almost 50 🤣🤣) Your neighbour is a killjoy!!!

DiscoBeat · 20/06/2025 18:34

I must admit though, I do dry our smalls on the inside of the rotary line since the time my ex boss dropped by unexpectedly and I was having an awkward conversation in view of a line of bras gently waving in the breeze.

So do I just in case of pop in visitors! 😂

I'm sure OP wouldn't mind, might have to travel though 😂
