Sorry to post in AIBU but I wanted the traffic.

Currently live in a commuter town and work in the city (not London) but pretty major city. Takes me around 55mins commute (car) to and from work. Have 3 small DC. It’s time to move as house is now too small.

Would you move back into the city and get an “ok” house (as in big enough but not exactly a show stopper) or move the other way towards the countryside (not fully rural) and get your “dream house” for roughly the same price. Countryside would mean getting a new job as commute would then be unmanageable. This is doable though due to the nature of our jobs.

YABU - move to city
YANBU - move to country

How easy is getting a new job?

Michele09 · 19/06/2025 10:59

I'd look for a new job first and then move to the country once I had one unless wfh is possible. Otherwise you could end up with a long commute. I'd also be looking at schools.

i would choose the dream house but only if I had;

  1. thoroughly researched the job opportunities in the new area
  2. got a new job lined up in that area before the move
  3. or was willing to commute the long distance to my current job for the time being
  4. had the finances to take a couple of months off work if I didn’t want to commute that distance

How much in the country will it be?

Are there amenities within walking distance or are you happy everywhere?

Our neighbour has recently moved out here to the countryside and the compromise was she gets to be a taxi for her DC for the foreseeable as there are literally no amenities or public transport.
