DH has upset our loudly shagging neighbours

Our neighbours can be quite loud when in the bedroom - both houses are detached, but with warmer evenings they often have their two bedroom windows open. This means we can hear all sorts - we’ve always assumed they are aware of this and it’s part of their enjoyment. They are both confident young professionals and to be fair are polite whenever we see them on the drive.

We have turned a blind eye to it, but now our DC is old enough to be playing in the garden regularly, two days ago next door were having a very vocal session at about 4pm whilst he was in our garden.

Both DH and I agreed this was a line crossed and that we’d say something but try to make it light hearted and not confrontational. They usually both commute together on a Wednesday and leave at a similar time, so DH was on look out in our front room and he’d disguise going out to his car as a way to speak to them.

Anyway, the woman appeared first and DH went out, assuming her partner would follow.

DH jokingly said to her something about it being a good seeing to yesterday, and she looked shocked.

Basically - they weren’t aware we could hear anything!!

Here is the issue - her partner wasn’t there yesterday morning but knocked after his work and took offence at how DH approached it and his terminology. DH apologised on the spot but it’s clear they are not happy with him.

Do you think we should have approached this differently, a note through the door? We thought we’d address head on and humour would be the best bet.

No need to keep it 'light-hearted'. Better to be grown up and say something like: "You might not be aware but sound travels really easily round here and we can hear you having sex. This includes DC when he is in the garden. Please can you shut the windows or tone it down. Thanks."

FumingTRex · 19/06/2025 08:17

Thats hilarious , but maybe in the heat of the moment he wasnt sure how to phrase it and so said the worst thing possible.

I think the best approach now is to say its embarrassing for you too and youve been trying to think of the best way to broach it, but your DH just blurted something out and it wasnt meant to be offensive.

Edenmum2 · 19/06/2025 08:17

Oh OP….why would he say that? Imagine you were her in that situation. Why does your husband talk like that? So so gross

MissDoubleU · 19/06/2025 08:18

It wouldn’t have mattered if her partner was already stood beside her - remarking that he gave her a “good seeing to” could be argued as sexual harassment from your DH. If you were trying to maintain moral high ground because they can be heard by a child… well, you’ve fucked it.

Doctorkrank · 19/06/2025 08:18

What your OH said to her was really awful.

Edenmum2 · 19/06/2025 08:18

SamFoodie · 19/06/2025 08:13

The neighbours front door was open and DH assumed her partner would be following hence the jokey comment - but he was WFH and upstairs on a call.

her DH being there doesn’t make the comment any better

FumingTRex · 19/06/2025 08:19

Your neighbours are being U for subjecting your son to a porn soundtrack, so hold your head high!

fragrancefriend · 19/06/2025 08:20

What do you think of how he approached it op?

scotstars · 19/06/2025 08:20

He approached this wrong and came across as creepy. I'd be mortified at someone making that comment. Discreet note saying you could hear a lot of noise around 4pm and would they be able to close windows in future would have been much simpler but now all he can do is apologise say tried to be funny as it's a bit awkward and it's come out wrong

bluesriff · 19/06/2025 08:21

This. Why on earth didnt he say something normal and sensible like this? this comes across as completely reasonable.

Instead he made a stupid comment akin to something a 14 boy would say that made him look like a complete perv. I am not at all surprised he got the reaction he did. He's acted like a complete dickhead here.

Goody2ShoesAndTheFilthyBeast · 19/06/2025 08:21

Now your husband has come across as a creep.

You should have talked her or your husband should have talked to him or one of you shoukd have written a note.

He just made a gross sexual comment to a woman and now they're going to be thinking hes been knocking one out while listening.

He should apologise for the way he said something but not that he said something because you are both tired of listening to them having sex.

this must be a wind up post as surely no man would jokingly comment to his female neighbour that she was enjoying having a good seeing to as a way to tackle this?

This!

LunchtimeNaps · 19/06/2025 08:22

If this is true she probably thinks he's a predator 🤣

Having sex isn’t a porn soundtrack, don’t be weird.

people are clueless about how loud they are, it’s not hard to ask them to keep the windows shut, without being a creep about it

Fiver555 · 19/06/2025 08:24

You should have been the one to have a word with the female neighbour, not dh. She would have felt very uncomfortable with him, particularly with him taking the nudge, nudge, wink wink, good seeing to line.

This. It's grotesque and sounds like he has enjoyed listening.

Your DH needs to apologise I think. Then say something like the above. Yikes. Way to go DH for ruining neighbourly relations, lol - they might err, come back from this but might never speak to you again. Probably will keep the noise down though either way..

whitewineandsun · 19/06/2025 08:26

Nah, I don't believe he said that. Does he have zero social skills? If the partner had been there, it would have been just as creepy.

rainbowstardrops · 19/06/2025 08:26

It’s shitty that they’re making so much noise with the windows open but I’d be bloody pissed off if my male neighbour said that to me too and I’d think he was a creep!

springintoaction321 · 19/06/2025 08:26

Sleepygrumpyandnothappy · 19/06/2025 08:15

Why are you defending his behaviour?

Because it was a joke?

Your neighbours must be thick as mince if they hadn't realised that sound carries through an open window Confused

They probably still don't get it - I think you'll have to explain in black and white terms to them @SamFoodie

PopeJoan2 · 19/06/2025 08:28

Even if her partner was around what he said was sexist and aggressive. He would never say that to a man. For his information Women don’t get a “seeing to” during sex because they are equally involved. Who the hell are you married to?

Hillrunning · 19/06/2025 08:29

Eeeewww. Horrible phrasing from your husband, regardless of who he was saying it too!!

Women aren't being given a 'good seeing to' when having sex. They are just having sex!!

'Morning, thought you might like to be made aware that we can hear quite a lot when you have windows open'

Teanbiscuits33 · 19/06/2025 08:29

PollyBell · 19/06/2025 08:07

Come again?

But quieter this time…

ExtraOnions · 19/06/2025 08:30

…this is about the fourth thread on the same topic, in the last couple of days. I think there is someone getting off on talking about noisy sex

theunbreakablecleopatrajones · 19/06/2025 08:31

SamFoodie · 19/06/2025 08:13

The neighbours front door was open and DH assumed her partner would be following hence the jokey comment - but he was WFH and upstairs on a call.

The partner being there wouldn’t have made it any better, it’s just a weird remark.

Thinking about it, if your DH is OK with it, I would drop a note round, written by you, saying you are both sorry about his use of language - he was embarrassed and nervous and didn’t intend to use that unfortunate phrase.

You appreciate they didn’t realise you could hear them in the bedroom and appreciate them keeping the noise down, especially during the day, in future.

I’d add a bottle of decent wine.

The awkwardness will then pass
