So the bin men broke our bin. Just gobbled the lid. Hardly that deep.

Rung the council to request a new lid. Nope, don’t do them. Ok.
New bin.. yes but we can only give you a 140L skinny bin (previously a normal size 240L).
We said sorry that won’t work for us. Don’t worry we will buy a bin.
We are not allowed to buy a bin.

Much confusion. Multiple calls. All jobsworths. Stalk the street. Many an unbranded bin so I think we will be fine. Buy a bin. But ours is shiny.

I have thought about rubbing mud on it but then that’s not nice for the bin men so shiny it is.

Will they take it? Big mystery.

And if not then I have no idea what we are supposed to do. But I will worry about tomorrow.

I don’t manage with a skinny bin. Big family, and yes I recycle religiously with a plastic/glass/tin bin and paper/cardboard bin in my kitchen.

Good luck OP! What a palaver.

Before the late 80s every household had one small metal bin. Imagine that.

Nope. We always had a couple of bins when we were kids. What a rubbish assertion Grin

Every household had one metal bin where I lived. Is that more soothing for you?

Grin We had two, too, @Comtesse. Metal bins, that is. Sixties and Seventies.

Wishing very hard that @Anonbindrama’s bin will be emptied and safely returned to its proper place today Grin

Ahhh bin trauma I know thee well. 2wk bins & 2wk recycling here (no tetrapack or soft plastics) & weekly food. Extra for garden waste bin. No charge for us having to pick up all the detritus they leave all over the street & in our gardens.

Tbh the biggest issue is the recycling! The council, in their infinite wisdom, removed all public recycling bins. So if you miss recycling (which we did this week) you can only take it to the tip which is only open at the weekend 🎉

We had to buy our own bins for a while & they'd break the lids off them. So we'd tie the lids on but they'd just chuck em back on the ground. Got a snotty letter once about refusing to empty our bin cos it had water in the bottom... How'd that happen then, boys?!!

Member984815 · 19/06/2025 09:38

I'm in Ireland so private bin service , I had a skinny bin for 18 years moved house with me , then one day the truck ate the entire bin and they replaced it with the full size bin , we recycle , compost take glass to bottle banks use the can and plastic bottle returns and still my bin is full at most collections every 2 weeks . There was always overflow with the skinny bin but we could squish it in. I don't think I could go back to the skinny one until at least a couple of the kids move out.

Anonbindrama · 18/06/2025 22:01

Everyone on the street and surrounding streets has the normal 240L bin.

A skinny bin only takes two black bags apparently. It’s collected every 2 weeks.

We do recycle as much as we can; over the capacity of a 240L bin - we always have a lag building up. We have two children in nappies. I am not sure how we are supposed to go from a jammed 240L bin to a 140.

Our council eligibility for a larger bin is 2 or more in nappies or 6 people in the household, did you tell them you have 2 in nappies?

TheyFuckYouUpYourMamAndDad · 19/06/2025 07:33

Same here…I’m in a council that has no bins. We just get a handful of black and green bag rolls thrown on our doorstep a couple of times a year. Our bags are taken every two weeks, so in the meantime, they cause all kinds of issues of where to store (so your house doesn’t stink or, in hot weather, maggots 🤢). If we leave them in the garden, foxes/cats/rats have a field day. Then come ‘bag day’ (it’s not bin day 🤷‍♀️) we have to pile them all up in the street…it’s an absolute mess! We regularly get ‘Dear Householder’ letters telling us off for the mess, as litter is everywhere due to the local wildlife tearing the bags open, and even worse, rat issues!

I live on a really lovely street, with decent neighbours, but some have very large families (one family has 6 children under 12) so their bag pile after a fortnight can be 20 or more bags. I can’t imagine how they are storing these bags, and the smell in this heat must be rancid. We don’t have food bins either, just the two bags, green for recycling, black for everything else, including food and nappies.

I’m single and live alone, so only usually use two of each bag over the fortnight, but I feel real sympathy for the families here.

God knows why our council don’t want bins!

My DD lived in Tower Hamlets for a bit after uni and it was like that there, except that they didn't even get the bags supplied to them. The foxes and rats had a great time.

Umpteen companies actually produce fancy stick on covers for bins - some of my neighbours have them. Amazon might do them.

I got my pre-printed number and street stickers from Amazon.

I'm sure you're not wondering if it should go in composting or recycling, so I think you're probably in the wrong place.
Hope the recovery goes well Flowers and you get more useful answers on a suitable part of MN (Women's Health?).

PS Overuse? Ouch!
I know it's a typo for "ovaries" but it's a good one.

DonnaSueWeloveyou · 18/06/2025 22:19

This. I doubt the binmen (bin people?) scrutinise each bin they empty.

Although with two kids in nappies would you not qualify for two of the smaller bins?

In Fife, if you have a child in nappies you qualify for a larger bin.

CatHairEveryWhereNow · 19/06/2025 09:52

It is worth checking yoru coucil rules op - as here there is a council nappy service you can register for and it collects every two weeks seperate to everything else.

I have never seen a skinny bin, what are you talking about? All the bins round here are 240L or larger.

Friend moved into a house that had a 2 bin allowance for the previous owners. 2 big bins!! 😮 they’ve kept using them and no one said anything ever.

She won the fucking bin lottery.

One of our neighbours just steals extra bins from others. She had our paper bin at one point...even though I'd painted our number on it. I couldn't retrieve it, because she'd padlocked her back gate and I didn't fancy my chances climbing over it. I was peering through the slats, maddened by the sight of my beautifully numbered bin sitting next to hers. Our paper bin. Why did she need two paper bins?

When I went to her door, she claimed to be a police woman and implied that she'd charge me because I had "alarmed" her "child" when I first went round to complain.

When I pointed out that a police woman should know better than to leave a "child" alone in the house [Naw...The bin thief was clearly hiding inside.] she declared "My child is 17."

When I further pointed out that a police woman should know better than to purloin a bin, she swiftly blamed it on her husband.

I was able to retrieve my bin the next collection day. I'd told her to return it to my door, but of course she didn't.

Sat waiting for an update!

oncemoreuntothebeachdearfriends · 19/06/2025 10:00

How many bins do people actually have?
I have 5 outdoor + 1 indoor food waste.
After all re-cycling, the "left-over" bin has very little in it.

WeMeetInFairIthilien · 19/06/2025 10:08

1 x 140L fortnightly general rubbish bin
2 green boxes (1 for glass, 1 for tins and plastic)
1 food waste bin
1 x 240L garden waste bin, fortnightly collected (on opposite week to general rubbish) - £70 a year for this.

Clothes, batteries (tied into bags on the top if the green boxes) and small electrical items can also be left out

Family of 4, the 140L bin is fine for a normal fortnight, but if there is a birthday (young children, often polystyrene packaging) or we've had a clear out, we have to make a tip trip.

Lots of the houses in the historic city centre don't have front gardens, so have seagull proof reusable bin sacks, which get hung off of the railings. And blow across the road with the slightest provocation.

240L bins are for families of 5, or 2 children in nappies.

I really hope Shiny Bin is collected and made to feel welcome!

WhereIsMyJumper · 19/06/2025 10:09

I predict the update will be that the rubbish will be collected in the new, shiny bin because the bin men doing the rounds won’t give much of a fuck about council bin politics and as your bin will be hiding in plain sight amongst other bins, they will just empty as usual.

The bin men around here are ace. We are supposed to put our cardboard in a separate bag. I haven’t had a bag for 6 months so all cardboard just goes in the bin with all the other recycling and they still empty it. They will also empty the general rubbish bin even if it is overflowing and always put them back in a pretty tidy manner

Just two. One regular waste black 240L and one green recycling 240L for cardboard, plstic and tins. We used to have a glass box a while ago but you have to take them to recycle yourself now.

WhereIsMyJumper · 19/06/2025 10:11

Also, my bin broke at my last house and when I ordered a new one on the council website I just told them there were more people living there than actually were. They sent me a normal sized bin and not one the size of a bucket.

WearyAuldWumman · 19/06/2025 10:12

Dontdoitdoreen · 18/06/2025 23:32

You have no idea.
Yes, bin thieves walk amongst us. That's why when people get a new bin they have to rummage about for an old tin of paint with enough in the bottom to paint their house number onto said bin. I know who stole our lovely clean and cared for paper pod but could never prove it because DP forgot to paint the number on it.

I finally bought sticky address plates from Amazon. They've worked thus far. Prior to that, some reprobates ignored the painted-on numbers. For some reason, they'd happily ignore or scrape off paint but are loath to peel off official-looking stickers with full address (apart from the postcode).

Damn! "Currently Unavailable". Yikes!

This is the closest that I can find...I like mine better and wanted more for my plant pots.

JoshLymanSwagger · 19/06/2025 10:18

1 x 240L Black bin for "everything" that doen't get recycled.
1 x 240L Grey bin for recyclables - card, glass, cans, plastic etc all mixed in together then separated after collection at a "state of the art" recycling centre.
1 x 240L Brown bin for garden waste - which is an extra £56 per yr - that you can also use for food waste, which is sent to some bio-digester thingy 🤔

Black bin emptied one week, Grey and Brown emptied on the same day the following week.

The bin men are great, and don't make too much mess - mostly grass from over-full brown bins tbh - but they don't see/read the numbers on the bins, so DH waits until they've been (usually bang on 7am) then goes out and sorts thru/retreives ours and both NDNs.
