Why is it fair that Scottish carers get more carers allowance than English carers?

With the carers supplement they get twice a year, it boils down to just over £11 a week more than English carers. They're all doing the same old slog, so why is it fair.
I am caring for 2 people, it is hard going. I only get carers for 1 though as that is how the system works. Ive just found out that Scottish carers get a supplement twice a year, lucky ducks. Well sort of, better than nowt.
So my question is, why? I thought we were one nation. Am I being unreasonable here.

I get UC, Scottish Child Payment, Carer's Allowance, CDP. Helps to have a government that cares.

slinkiemalinkiey · 18/06/2025 20:24

Scots pay more tax on the higher levels.

Snugglemonkey · 18/06/2025 21:44

Scottishskifun · 18/06/2025 10:20

In Scotland the taxes are higher for people with different thresholds.

It's also devolution so Scottish govt get to decide what money is spent on. Flip side there is no under 3s childcare funding unless you qualify for assisted 2 year old funding which tends to be UC households.

Indeed. We are not all the same. The Scottish Parliament have different spending priorities. As there are different spending priorities in Wales and Northern Ireland. Moone can just have the bits that are most advantageous to them sadly.

Butchyrestingface · 18/06/2025 21:46

@KindleAndCake I think your case has been thoroughly 'not proven'. Grin

KindleAndCake · 19/06/2025 07:02

OK, I've read through all your comments, thankyou.
I am well aware of devolution.
I was just unaware until yesterday that the Scots carers got paid a little bit more than the English. Good for them. But as a poster put, maybe that isn't what I should be looking at, it should be the pittance we're 'paid' to begin with.

It really is a pittance, regardless of which part of the UK you live in. Considering the money saved by looking after our DC 24hrs a day throughout the year, often without respite.

Apply for any respite/short breaks grants you can!!

stargirl1701 · 19/06/2025 07:13

We pay more in income tax.

Goody2ShoesAndTheFilthyBeast · 19/06/2025 07:15

It's not fair. It doesn't have to be. It's set by the Scottish government not the English one.

Tbh both amounts are an insult given the millions and millions family carers save the UK.

The uk would be utterly fucked if everyone on ca for caring for an adult said they weren't doing it any more. All those adults social services would be legally responsible for? Imagine the cost!!

MrsSkylerWhite · 18/06/2025 11:19

You’re asking the wrong question. You ought to be asking why does the English government not pay a more reasonable carers allowance?
(Though the amount in Scotland is still insufficient.)

There's no such thing as the English Government.
I feel this is one of the main reasons that folk living in England have such a limited understanding of devolution in general and especially the devolved powers of the other nations.

Fedupmumofadultsons · 19/06/2025 10:04

I suppose because we pay higher taxes and care here is different anyone under pension age needing care it's a big chunk of there money to pay for it .Just different horse for courses

I think when people say, “English Government” they just mean the decisions Westminster make which only apply to England as the other nations are devolved for those issues.

Any adult in Scotland assessed as needing personal care is eligible to receive it free. It doesn't just apply to people of pension age.

They may very well do, but that is still the British Government.
I believe that using the correct terms for instututions is helpful in avoiding confusion.

I also believe that the vast majority of many people using the term English Government have absolutely no idea about devolution in Scotland or Wales, let alone the powers associated with the various devolution deals in place in English with, for example, the regional mayors.

rainbowunicorn · 19/06/2025 15:55

Hoooray · 18/06/2025 11:03

Scotland also gets free prescriptions, free university tuition, baby boxes and free water. Some of us do pay higher income tax, though. Devolution means that there are some significant differences between how England and Scotland are run.

YANBU to feel your carers' allowance is inadequate. It is, and should be higher.

Edited

Scotland does not get free water. The water and sewage charges are paid along with council tax. A band C house is paying over £500 a year for this.

OldMcDonaldHadABigMac · 18/06/2025 13:37

Oh yeah I'm up in Scotland as well, I just wasn't aware that the Adult Disability Payment was higher than PIP? And yes it does get confusing....DLA, PIP, now ADP....gets confusing!

It’s not higher apparently, it’s the same. Although I haven’t checked personally

tammienorrie · 19/06/2025 18:57

Scotland’s universities are so cash strapped that one is almost bankrupt. It’s not sustainable.

They are indeed exactly the same

Do you think Carers allowance should be at minimum wage? Because that would bankrupt the country instantly.

Because they are saving the country an absolute fortune.

Ihatetomatoes · 10/11/2025 09:44

Computersaysdontwantto · 18/06/2025 10:31

Scotland gets £2,000 more per hear a year to spend than it raises in taxes thanks to the Barnett formula. Instead of improving public services with this money it chooses to give this money away in benefits and ‘free’ things. Prescriptions, baby boxes, university tuition, much higher pip equivalent, no bedroom tax etc. they keep getting voted in by people living off benefits, public services keep getting worse, income tax on those earning more than the average wage keeps going up.

Its the way the SNP thinks a country should be run.

This.

We pay so they can give it away. Stop paying them more.

The pip equivalent is paid at the same rate in Scotland as Pip on England. just some people sprouting nonsense here.

Tax rates are higher in Scotland ?

we don’t get the money that Londoners get to spend on transport so we spent it elsewhere ?

FenceBooksCycle · 10/11/2025 15:44

Because it's a devolved issue and Scotland chooses to pay a higher tax in order to put more money into expenditure including this. England might have the same if it didn't have a track record of punishing at the ballot box any party that dares suggest that taxes could rise.
