To wish I worked at World of Books!

I LOVE old books!!

I'd love to go through picking orders from all those shelves and shelves of old books. Finding out what people have found online and chosen to buy.

Imagine the smell!

OK I'm probably romanticising a bit but who cares!

There’s nothing fun about working in a warehouse, even if they do sell stuff you like.

DiscoBob · 16/06/2025 19:41

You can come round mine and go through all my dad's old books if you like? Abut 35 shelves worth? I'm thinking I'll just have to chuck them all away at some point. Which is a shame.

But I'm sure working picking and packing any product for minimum wage on a zero hrs contract- books, caviar, designer bags, kittens...would lose its appeal after about two hours.

Zingy123 · 16/06/2025 19:49

You really don't. My DD worked there and it was awful.

DangerQuakeRhinoSnake · 16/06/2025 20:06

Awww this is actually quite depressing.

Thanks MN! 😩

Although I did enjoy stacking shelves as a youngster so maybe there is something about a job like that. It can't be all bad.

Probably people like me on a course with the longest reading list you have ever seen in your life and needing to buy them as cheaply as possibly.

And so grateful for the fast shipping and great assessment of quality. Thank you - warehouse peeps.

And sorry to hear that conditions are not that good. I really hadnt thought about it being a big mass-produced business.

fedupusingOHslaptop · 16/06/2025 22:46

It is huge, back in the day before World of books I ran a small independent warehouse with about 30, 000 books in stock at any one time. Just me, sold about 100 a day, and only read books I couldn't sell. I've read a lot of rubbish.

DangerQuakeRhinoSnake · 16/06/2025 23:01

That's pretty impressive @fedupusingOHslaptop

I wonder how much stock WoB has, and if it's all kept in one place?

Small beer, there was a large community of Amazon third party sellers back in the day. I've always assumed WOB had one big warehouse somewhere.

DangerQuakeRhinoSnake · 18/06/2025 17:50

Well given one book has already arrived and the rest of my order is still on its way, I would assume they have at least two @fedupusingOHslaptop

I used to work in a bookshop. It was brilliant.

I’ve been working FT nonstop for the last 30 years and my dream is to be able to retire in 10 years (age 60) and work PT in a bookshop or library for a bit of pin money and the ‘ambience’ 😊
