to find that ChatGPT is saving me tons of time at work?

I have so much more work-life balance now thanks to ChatGPT that is making mincemeat of the mundane parts of the job. It will proof read, put together emails, produce critiques, minutes and actions points, analyse finances all in the matter of seconds and much more.

Work was done by 2pm so I had a lovely afternoon in the sun because all my tasks got completed so quickly.

And no, AI can't take over my job completely as it involves critical face to face interaction and other specialist skills which AI cannot do.

I've found it quite argumentative, compared to ChatGPT, who aims to please :).

Oh sorry; forgot to specify - this was chat gpt about 2 years ago

I don’t work but I use Gemini ai every day. Today it’s identified a tree and an object from Facebook. It’s given detailed advice about different trees to plant in my garden with links where to get more info. I also asked it to sum up some medical letters and to provide more info on different types of treatment. I double check things of importance as it suggests I do. I also asked it a quick question about my boiler and for a suggested itinerary for a three night trip to North Wales. I give it loads of info and it comes back with great suggestions.

One of my daughters received a ridiculously flowery email invite to a women in buisness meeting and just for fun I asked Gemini to rewrite it in a shorter and less gushy format and it wrote the perfect email.

I probably used it for a couple of other things that I can’t remember.

I know it doesn’t get everything right but it’s pretty good and when you point out that it’s made a mistake it apologises. I think it’s really useful.

It only "apologises" in the sense of DS7 who has just hit DD5 and is told to say he's sorry. It's not capable of "apologising". It just writes what the model considers to be the most likely response, based on all that it has read (incidentally infringing the copyright of every author on the planet).

Also, how many times does it make a mistake and you can't point it out because you don't know the right answer either?

These machines are like the very, very confident bloke at the pub who has an opinion on everything. "Well Barry was right about Covid being airborne, so I reckon he might have something when it comes to chemtrails".

I mean I have also sat in front of consultants in tears, I've had these exact struggles because of my disabilities, like you. Don't assume I don't have significant or equal struggles just because I have a different opinion to you. I still hold the opinion that even though it helps in the moment, which is no small thing, ultimately it's contributing to homogenising our voices. Society treats us (disabled people of all types) like shit, and then offers us a solution of 'here, make yourself sound like a neurotypical'. I think it's just part of ableism, that we're sold a shitty mechanism that makes everyone sound the same.

I agree with you in a lot of ways. It is contributing to making us smaller and more convenient and less of a hassle.

It means doctors and consultants don't need to spend the time to understand and so they don't "stretch the muscle" of patience or adaptability.

We see the world in a different way that can be challenging but also interesting and delightful too. Losing our "voices" would absolutely make the world a less colourful place.

But on the other hand, it's like life is hard enough and should we not do things that make our lives easier because of the above points!?

If AI makes it easier for someone to advocate for themselves and receive medical care then I can't say there's anything wrong with that. We struggle with being heard or taken seriously and that can range from inconvenient to dangerous.

But I also completely understand and agree with your concerns too.

I don't know what the answer is.

AI is actively depleting the aquifer and causing acute water stress in some of the most drought-affected parts of the planet. Pollution from its data centres, sited where land is cheap is causing a 30% upswing in asthma deaths in the poor, often ethnic minority communities that live nearby.

AI has doubled my workload because the software I use has added crappy AI components that don't work and are an absolute nightmare to disable.

I use it to make sure I haven’t waffled on too much in my emails. I write them as usual and just use it if I notice I’ve got a bit tangled. I like it, but for sure it’s obvious when it’s overused.

Can't you do that yourself though?!
AI isn't a replacement for a human brain, although some of these posts make me think some see it as one!

Did you honestly think I didn’t know that! I think it might be helpful for you to ask AI to check whether people are joking or not. 😅

one2one2 · 17/06/2025 17:17

I just used it to update a job description. Only needed a couple of tweaks. Saved me hours of work!

Snap OP! Let copilot do the dull stuff and enjoy the weather!

At least it’s given the OP lots more time to add a load of really witty comments on this thread. Wink

🤣🤣🤣

I have found it useful for a number of routine tasks, however I work for a big corporate and we’re only allowed to use our in house AI tool or Microsoft Co Pilot

That would have taken you hours of work? Really? Starting to see why some people find this technology so impressive.

Yes because they are significant changes due to funding changes, sponsorship of the role. The role is also to be expanded to be much broader and a many other factors so yes it would have taken hours of work. It wasn't just changing one or two items.

One thing that strikes me about this thread are those who are determined to deride gen AI and pour scorn on those who use it (inferring it is due to intellect) are, in real terms, the refusers. It does not mean AI is not here to stay, it does not mean that the next level agentic models will again disrupt, but it does mean that the cynical critics have closed off their mind. Which is rather futile.

No one should have to defend to internet strangers how long a task took, it takes you the time it takes. And your use of gen AI or whichever type you use, speeds that up.

The work market will recalibrate, it has always been thus. I don't know of any telephone operators anymore - etc

zingally · 18/06/2025 11:52

It's all rosy until your workplace cut your hours to the face-to-face stuff only, once they realise AI can do all the admin stuff...

Yeah, it has it's place, but I wouldn't go jigging about to your work on how much time it's saving you.

Hedjwitch · 18/06/2025 12:22

I have just come out of a senior management meeting on the use of AI and the comment has already been made that if AI is better at taking minutes, then we don't need as many admin staff.

It’s going to clear out admin staff everywhere. It costs less, doesn’t take holidays and doesn’t talk back.

So, it seems at the very least that ChatGBT has mastered the art of the corporate or politician's apology! 😂

Well yes. They're not called bullshit machines for nothing. Although at least I've yet to hear of an LLM saying "I'm sorry you feel that way"!
