I prefer white gold but it's a personal preference.

Devilsmommy · 15/06/2025 13:27

White gold is my preference but its all dependent on personal preference and what colour looks better with your colouring

Sundaymorningcalla · 15/06/2025 13:28

White gold will need replating oeriodically as the rhodium that it's coated with will eventually wear away, platinum will not. If it's aesthetics you're after then go for platinum.

x2boys · 15/06/2025 13:29

Honestly Op if yellow gold is your personal preference than get yellow gold .

MustardGlass · 15/06/2025 13:30

I prefer white gold as it goes nicely with my skin tone but it needs rhodium plating pretty regularly especially if I use hand sanitizer throughout the day. Edited to say I wish I had of just got yellow gold.

MetricMs · 15/06/2025 13:31

Platinum or 18ct gold (yellow or rose). White gold is not a true white so it is normally rhodium plated to add that super bright look. That will wear down with time, the slightly grey toned white gold will show through and you will need to replate it occasionally. Not a big issue but it is easier just to go straight to platinum.

GinnyandGeorgia · 15/06/2025 13:31

Depends on your skin tone?

Snowtea · 15/06/2025 13:35

I guess I’m just curious what people prefer

it’s very much about skin tone - I have warm olive skin brown hair and green eyes I’ve always preferred yellow gold and would love a Welsh gold wedding ring which is yellow

my dh to be so wants to get white gold for me. I’ve said to him I’ll be happy with whatever he would like to buy for me but really I love yellow gold. I always wear it and so would really prefer a wedding ring in yellow or rose gold.

most of my other jewellery is yellow gold including items I never remove - I just don’t know how to politely say firmly I want and like yellow gold when I know he’s disappointed as he so prefers white

I find white gold needs annual replating (“dipping”) by a jeweller, £40. Platinum goes quite grey so needs annual polishing by a jeweller, £10.

Yellow gold is maintenance free.

In order of preference; platinum, yellow gold, white gold.

My wedding/engagement rings are white gold and yes I’ve had to have them replated. It’s not expensive but they look sort of discolored prior to having it done.

At some point I may have to have the setting of my engagement ring replaced because I had to have it cut off then repaired. Unfortunately I was a heavier weight when I had that done and now it’s too big for me. I’m not sure if I can have it resized at this point so I’m wearing a ring sizer with it.

If/when I replace the set I’ll go platinum.

Well you will be the one wearing it, theres no right or wrong answer becsuse it all comes down personal preference
Just tell you prefer yellow gold and wouldn't be happy with white gold .

NeverDropYourMooncup · 15/06/2025 13:40

He likes white gold, so he gets white gold for his own wedding ring. You like yellow gold, so you get yellow gold for your wedding ring.

It shouldn't be that difficult for him.

SlipperyLizard · 15/06/2025 13:41

I only wear silver- coloured jewellery so I hit a platinum wedding ring as didn’t want faff of replating white gold.

DH has a yellow gold band as he prefers that.

It is your ring that you’ll be wearing every day - your DH doesn’t get the final say (and you should be able to tell him that!).

EasternStandard · 15/06/2025 13:42

Ask for your preference, you’ll be disappointed otherwise.

Snowtea · 15/06/2025 13:44

Hmm he doesn’t want to wear a wedding ring which is his choice

I have said specifically twice now not white but yellow but maybe I should choose one and ask for it to prevent him being disappointed he can’t persuade me that white gold/platinum is the superior choice

My DH bought me a lovely white gold ring but I can’t wear it because I’m allergic! I’d never had white gold previous to this so didn’t know ☹️

isthismylifenow · 15/06/2025 13:47

Rose or yellow gold for me

I look a bit insipid in silver tones, and it doesn't do the jewellery any justice at all.

I know platinum and white gold are more popular at the moment, but it really depends on your skin tone. Something cheap and in my colour looks way better than expensive and not in the right tone.

GreyCarpet · 15/06/2025 13:53

I don't like the look of yellow gold. Rose is OK. I prefer white gold or platinum. It also suits my skin tone.

Surely you just get what you prefer?

If your other jewellery is yellow gold, and it sounds like it would suit your skin tone better than white metals, then have yellow.

He can have white gold for his own if he prefers.

Platinum doesn’t turn grey. White gold is more of a grey toned white but platinum remains bright. Wear and tear may create fine scratches on platinum that the owner may want to polish out occasionally but it doesn’t go grey.

Read what you wrote over again OP.
Yes he is paying for the ring, but it's you who will be wearing it. White gold isn't going to match what you already have or your skin tone. Why do you feel you don't have a say here?

Well if he's not even having one, he doesn't even get a say in what you want.

Or is this how he is generally?

White gold is a mix of pure gold and other silver metals to give it the colour. The carat will determine the quantity of pure gold (ie 18ct has more gold and less other metals than 9ct). It is more likely you are allergic to one of the mixing metals.

Bigcat25 · 15/06/2025 13:58

I have palladium white gold and it doesn't need replating.
