So I’m 6 weeks pregnant and went for an early scan because I’ve been so sick and tired compared to my last two pregnancy’s. So sure I was having twins but could only see one baby on the scan. I did however notice a shadow in one of the photos, could that be a second baby hidden?

I think it's clear it's one baby, but I would say your doctors knows better. If they say one baby then it's one baby.

A shadow where OP? I'm a sonographer, it would be incredibly difficult for someone to miss a second embryo. I would only consider it a possibility if you had the scan at a private clinic, as some of the scanners there are not qualified, but have done a day course (as opposed to a 2 year post grad diploma)

Did you ask the doctors. Might be a bit more accurate than mumsnet. Congratulations whether it’s one or two little ones

JustAnInchident · 13/06/2025 19:47

It’s unlikely that a. your feeling is more reliable than a sonographer and b. anyone on mumsnet is better placed to judge based on two stills from a scan than the aforementioned sonographer.
Congratulations on your pregnancy, I wish you all the very best 💐

I had phantom twins, at my 12 week scan they found indications of a yolk sac but the embryo had never developed. One healthy embryo left growing. Could be that? I was so much more sick and tired than other pregnancies.

Amba1998 · 13/06/2025 20:27

Some people just feel worse. Some people sail through. Some people get hyperemsis and need fluids and medication. Some people get pelvic pain and heartburn. Some don’t. It’s nothing to do with how many babies though!

Doitrightnow · 13/06/2025 20:28

Are your other children both the same sex? I know someone who is convinced they are sicker in pregnancy with girls than boys.

ninjahamster · 13/06/2025 20:34

I felt more sick and tired with every pregnancy. They were all singles.

MyCyanReader · 13/06/2025 20:45

I didn't feel at all sick or tired and assumed it was my 3rd MMC then found out at 12 weeks it was twins. I was shocked and terrified!

They would have said if there was more than 1.

clareykb · 13/06/2025 20:46

So I did have a missed embryo at a 7 week scan (nhs due to previous loss) they saw 1 baby and 1 un developed egg sack.. I now have 11 year old identical twins so it does happen. HOWEVER, The sonograpber did comment at the time that there was something else and it was clearer than in your pic, also I felt fine so on balance prob 1 baby but it isn't impossible

This is what I was going to say. Much sicker with DD than do was with DS.

shortsharp · 13/06/2025 20:48

My second pregnancy had me in hospital at 8 weeks with horrendous nausea and vomiting. They asked if twins ran in the family as did the midwife at my booking in appt but it was just one baby in the end.

JohnnyMcGrathSaysFuckOff · 13/06/2025 20:48

I have twins and felt better with them than during my singleton pg.

I don't think feeling is reliable.

This was true for me. I was so much sicker with my daughter. Not sure if it was because of the sex, or because second pregnancy, or just random!

CMRE · 13/06/2025 20:51

I have twins and there was very clearly two of them at my 6+5 scan

I was sicker with my daughter than my sons, and the nurse at my OBGYN's office told me it was probably because she was a girl. She was right. But I was also nine years older than the last time I was pregnant, so it may have been that.

Coconutter24 · 13/06/2025 21:03

Could you be more tired with your third pregnancy because you already have children to look after?
