To think shein is actually good?

Always been sniffy about any fast fashion (never knowingly bought anything). Have lots of stuff going on over the summer. Spent 100s +++ on different outfits from various labels. Now desperate so gave Shein a try and the outfits look really good. As a tall woman it’s unusual to find stuff that actually fits well.

It's how the stuff is made that's the problem. Polyester galore, people paid a misery so that the company can sell cheap. Definitely not what Iwant to.spend money on .... It goes against my principles so won't buy from there. I like Vinted and charity shops, and always find nice good quality clothes.

sideeyes · 13/06/2025 22:20

Thanks everyone for your opinions. I will definitely read about the conditions in which shein clothes are made. This was a one-off purchase so I can’t see me going back for more.

to answer a few points:

  • i love charity shops and would shop solely in these but as a particularly tall person it is nigh-on impossible to get anything that fits properly. Also, for people on lower incomes charity shops just aren’t very cheap anymore.
  • re. stolen items on Vinted. Lots of stuff new with tags? New shoes advertised as ‘I’ve only worn them once or twice’. Size given in number but as they are a unisex shoe I ask if it is 8 women or 8 men. The reply was ‘I have no idea’. Surely if you or someone you know has worn them once or twice then you know if they were on a man or woman. Also, when received they were brand spanking new. Many more anecdotes like this.
  • re making own clothes. Yes, I used to, but fabric even then was pretty expensive and was also made in Indian sweatshops so not really avoiding the issue as I understood it.

All I’ll say is that it’s hard to be ethical when you’re poor.

How does that work when the ethical choice is cheaper? You can get used clothes for free on FB.

Nobody on here has ever used SHEIN. Meanwhile in real life…

In real life I don't know anyone who admits to using it.

I'm not particularly wealthy, probably considered 'poor' by MN standards. I still refuse to support the likes of Shein.

IDroppedRocky · 14/06/2025 07:29

I love fast fashion. Can’t beat it. I’m really not fussed about the “environmental” and “ethical” aspects.

loongdays · 14/06/2025 07:31

It’s not just cheap clothes that are produced unethically. All the fashion labels moved to countries with poor working conditions and poor to non existent workers rights. You’re kidding yourselves if you think buying slightly more expensive clothes saves you from this.

Apparently VB only uses British labour, or at least used to. Not checked if ahe still does as I only buy second hand clothes.

Why on earth do you think new with tags must be stolen? I sell loads of stuff with tags as I’m terrible for overbuying in sales and never take tags off till I wear things so can end up with all sorts in my wardrobe. Vinted has been amazing for me for both buying and selling, I’ve had some amazing bargains and always kit my kids out for holidays pretty much purely via Vinted. You get much better quality and ethical items for shien/primark prices.

Or what? Do you realise how many people use Shein? If nobody thought the same as you lot it wouldn’t be used, but, oh wait, it is.

I’m not going to hide it just because some people have their knickers in a twist.

To be honest, it might be stolen or it might not be stolen - none of us can really know. Some is probably counterfeit too. I'd rather not take the risk.

The blood on the collar of a dress I received tells me otherwise, never again!

Some folk really are desperate to defend awful practices.

Some folk really just don’t care. Most folk, actually. This thread is nothing more than an echo chamber for people to get hysterical over something they can’t control.

ShowOfHands · 14/06/2025 07:52

It's always "bits" people buy from these places and that throwaway word seems to justify it for a lot of people (along with the other reasons always stated on these threads).

I've been dirt poor in the past and it didn't affect my moral compass. There are so many ways to shop that don't involve supporting child labour and the worsening of the climate crisis. And many of the people I do know who say they have to use temu and shein because they don't have the money for anything ethical, are buying dozens and dozens of throwaway items and justifying it this way.

OP you say you're "desperate" and having to resort to this. Have you really got nothing in your wardrobe already? We are consuming at such an enormous rate and people are buying new for every single event. I really am not a killjoy or sniffy about fashion (I love clothes actually and do buy them through want rather than need), but it is an absolute disaster we are all sleepwalking into.

ThePhantomoftheEcobubbleOpera · 13/06/2025 16:40

I've never got anything from Vinted that doesn't smell like half a can of Fabreeze 🤮

Although, so much new stuff with the tags still attached 🧐

I buy from Vinted a lot (as in, I think I have an issue) and I have only ever had the febreeze thing once. So I washed it. End of issue.

I’ve also sold a lot, including lots of brand new with labels, some of it is resold stuff that I’ve bought, some it is stuff that I’ve had for years and changed my mind about when I got home, some of it’s quite expensive stuff that I bought a few options of and meant to return but never got around to. I didn’t realise there was an assumption that there was anything dodgy about it.

FatherFrosty · 14/06/2025 08:02

its also worth noting the items sold (including clothes and shoes jay includes baby and children’s) contain harmful, toxic and illegal substances

The environmental and human toll of fast fashion is enormous. People working for pence per item, six days a week for 15 hours a day. I personally don't want to fuel that business.

A good reason to avoid it.

Holier than thou people who gasp at the Shein effect on the planet can do one, if they say this before closing the door on one of the four SUVs the family has for four people, in a city.

As for trading standards, there is a distribution centre for Shein in Belgium. The EU only allows non EU imports that comply with EU standards. I don't know about the rules in Britain.

What about people with uPVC windows, composite doors, log burners, old, energy inefficient properties, children, etc, etc...can they do one too? Interesting how you only mention SUVs.
