To think shein is actually good?

Always been sniffy about any fast fashion (never knowingly bought anything). Have lots of stuff going on over the summer. Spent 100s +++ on different outfits from various labels. Now desperate so gave Shein a try and the outfits look really good. As a tall woman it’s unusual to find stuff that actually fits well.

Their point is that many people buy too much/ don’t try on/ don’t return in time so it ends up being sold or donated.

Nobody is denying that is the case. The point is that there will also be stolen items on selling platforms. 🫣

tammienorrie · 14/06/2025 09:24

Yes there will be stolen items on selling platforms like Vinted as there was before that on Ebay and before that on market stalls or from a dodgy guy at the pub.

But it would be wrong to assume that anyone selling anything brand new, never worn is dodgy.

Nobody is assuming everyone is absolutely dodgy though.

Not the point of the thread but an option for avoiding throwing clothes out

To think shein is actually good?
tammienorrie · 14/06/2025 09:29

Many appear to be using the "sellers on vinted are dodgy" as a reason to buy from Shein.

Funny you should mention the being tall thing!

I'm 5'9 with a short waist & find getting things long enough in the leg (34") is nigh on impossible but both temu & Shein have furnished me with floor sweeping swooshy skirts & trousers. In fact I've a couple of pairs of really loose, wide leg trousers that ALWAYS have random women comment on them - it's like they've some magical power. Last week a woman did a double take in the bloody post office, stood back on the second look & declared I looked amazing & she LOVED my trousers - I looked like I live in a hedge, genuinely, unwashed hair scraped back, no make-up but it's the damn trousers.

Two skirts turned up yesterday & one touches the floor & the other the top of my feet.

I have to be careful & read reviews, looking for 'way too long, have to adjust' or the helpful tall ladies exclaiming their joy.

I'm not honestly sure if these prices were any cheaper than primark etc (betw £10 & £15) but they look expensive simply cos they fit me.

On ethics - I'm not convinced it's any worse than any other affordable, mass produced product & some paint pens I bought actually came from amazon where I could have bought them for 3x the price 🤷🏼

This. I am tall and anything in the shops are too short for me when I want them to be full length. Every dress or skirt I have got from Shein has been floor length. I got a skirt from new look the other day I will have to wear on my hips to make it full length. Also the quality from new look is the same as the items I have from Shein.

NoSoupForU · 14/06/2025 09:38

I think its horrid, nasty cheap shit. Its cheap awful plasticy materials. It might look ok from a distance, but it all looks crap close up. I feel the same about all fast fashion. I'd rather pay more for clothes in nicer or natural materials that are well cut and made.

I'm also really against the constant shipping of cheap landfill shit from China. The mentality of it doesn't matter if it isn't great because it's so cheap.

And I'm not big on the slave factories either.

It's a real pain isn't it. I see stuff that looks lovely then check the measurements to see '28" inside leg' & I'd just look like I'd had a growth spurt & my parents hadn't got new clothes for me yet. Got long arms too so often default to men's jumpers & hoodies.

Long Tall Sally used to be OKish but a few years ago the quality & designs went to absolute shit & so often the 'tall' ranges are just drab & shapeless elsewhere.

Solidarity, my limby sister ✊

I have much longer than average back, or at least it seems that way, so feel your pain with sizing.
I find that tops that are meant to be longer sit well as normal length tops on me. 🫣

nomas · 14/06/2025 10:08

I am really impressed (shocked) with the clothes I bought.

Do you work for Shein, OP? I’ve noticed they’ve really ramped up their online advertising.

Megifer · 14/06/2025 10:09

I've used Shein now and then and it's always pretty good quality, fits well and washes really good too. Been pleasantly surprised every time. Good for plain t shirts for DP and the DC too.

Have you ever bought anything from there. All my summer dresses are lovely. Quality is the same as primark or new look. I don't do fast fashion I keep my clothes for years.

usedtobeaylis · 14/06/2025 10:16

I've never bought anything from it but every time my sister has something nice that I comment on, it always seems to be from there. She said as long as you read the reviews about the sizing you can't really go wrong. Any time I've had a wee look it doesn't seem to be that cheap in comparison to the likes of Primark.

Something to be aware of is that a lot of the initial product images are fake, either AI or of a higher quality version of the clothing. I've found you have to look to the reviews, especially for ones with photos to get a real idea of fabric/fit etc.

I say this as someone who loves the items I've gotten, but I'm very careful & not impulsive.

Primark and New Look are shit quality. No I've never bought anything from Shein but I have friends and colleagues who love waxing lyrical about how they've only paid 12p for the dress they're wearing from Shein and they've been (without any single exception) nasty horrid cheap shit.

It's always "bits" people buy from these places and that throwaway word seems to justify it for a lot of people (along with the other reasons always stated on these threads).

I've been dirt poor in the past and it didn't affect my moral compass. There are so many ways to shop that don't involve supporting child labour and the worsening of the climate crisis. And many of the people I do know who say they have to use temu and shein because they don't have the money for anything ethical, are buying dozens and dozens of throwaway items and justifying it this way.

OP you say you're "desperate" and having to resort to this. Have you really got nothing in your wardrobe already? We are consuming at such an enormous rate and people are buying new for every single event. I really am not a killjoy or sniffy about fashion (I love clothes actually and do buy them through want rather than need), but it is an absolute disaster we are all sleepwalking into.

Where do you buy your clothes and ‘bits’ from then??

all those who promote Vinted as a good way to be ‘ethical’….what about all that extra packaging and then of course there’s a van delivering a skirt….and then another zooming up the road just to deliver an over wrapped pair of trousers, then another and another…..

not convinced it’s more ethical at all…

Are you buying from shein tall section or regular sizing?

Oh don't be ridiculous! High end stuff is made in China, not just cheap rubbish. How much clothing do you think is made in England these days?

The snobbish remarks on here are something else. I've not bought anything from Shein myself, but defend the right of others to do so if they want. People don't just buy clothes either, I know several men who buy things which they are thrilled with as the quality is great but the prices cheap - someone was raving about a torch just the other day.

As for "the poor" not being able to chose clothing they actually like but being expected to make do with things being given away on FB - there are no words!!

tammienorrie · 14/06/2025 10:52

Of course second-hand is more ethical. You are not buying something flown half way round the world for a start, or made from brand new fabric made with huge quantities of water and chemicals. You are not contributing to more stuff being on the planet by buying something which already exists.

And many of us who are bothered about sustainability and fast fashion and waste try our very best not to buy mindlessly and do not feel the need to fill our lives with "bits".

Pinkissmart · 14/06/2025 10:57

I mean, as long as you have something to wear, I guess it's fine.

Shizzlestix · 14/06/2025 11:46

Bought practically everything in my wardrobe from Vinted after bariatric surgery (26 to a 12/14). Had a few items stinking of Febreze so they went straight in the wash, one item twice because it still smelled.

Oddly, had a Shein item this week, long denim skirt, brilliant quality, really cool design, but I wouldn’t buy direct from them. Does it make it morally better that it was second hand? I really don’t know. Had it been in a charity shop, I probably wouldn’t have looked at the label because it’s so nice.

As a pp mentioned, Nike has an appalling reputation. I watched a documentary where British charity workers went to work at a factory in India and lived in the shanty town. I don’t know how the company hasn’t been prosecuted for the awful conditions and how they dare charge so much given the conditions/price of manufacturing.

I’m all for secondhand, it makes far more sense than buying in fast fashion shops. As another tall person, it is sometimes tricky and I usually check leg length although loads of sellers can’t be bothered to respond. 🤷‍♀️

How does it get to you? Are you ethically choosing something 2 miles down the road you can walk to collect?

or is it in a location miles away which is then transported to you via car then a van then another courier? All for one ‘bargain’ item off Vinted?

I've had some gorgeous summer dresses from Shein that I've been wearing for years now and get compliments on them every time I wear them. Infact most of my work wardrobe is also from Shein. I buy most of my children's clothes from there too.
