Perfume in the office

Aninabertsi · 13/06/2025 11:01

Why???!! Why do people think I would want to smell them from 30 feet away!? Or have the same taste as them? If you must use perfume, why not just use a small amount so only if I stand directly next to you I can smell it not all the way across the office (open plan office at that)...I can't think or concentrate on what I'm doing because all I can think off is this effing smell. Sorry for the rant but I think it should be banned

Perfume can be a sensory nightmare for some people. I don’t think it’s good manners to wear anything other than the lightest of fragrance in the workplace.

😆 🤣 😂 😹 😆 🤣

HÆLTHEPAIN · 13/06/2025 22:18

I don’t necessarily think it should be banned but maybe it should be restricted in some way…maybe by not spraying in the actual office.

I actually threw up when I was pregnant, when a woman on the next team to me sprayed some strong perfume. I didn’t make the loo either!🙈 To be fair, the smell of water made me puke too so I didn’t stand much of a chance. We were all told at that point to only spray in the loos, which I think is fair.

I’m really sensitive to smells nowadays too, due to chronic illness, so I definitely couldn’t work somewhere where perfume was allowed to be sprayed willy nilly! I note that people keep saying it’s better than the smell of feet/BO etc, but when you’re hypersensitive to smells, nothing is better or worse than the rest. The only thing worse is the BO/feet smell being masked by strong perfume.

I used to work next to a heavy smoker who would then spray herself with some sickly sweet fume afterwards. It was an u happy olfactory experience.

Grateful to work from home now where the worst thing is my own farts.

Right, so people aren’t allowed to wear perfume, use fabric conditioner, smoke or vape…anything else? 🤔

To be honest, none of these things bother me day to day, but from my daily commute on the tube, I would like more people to shower and put on deodorant and clean clothes before leaving the house…

What length should the jacket sleeves be?!!

They should sit at the wrist bone!

I wish people wouldn't bring the subject of flatulence into these threads. Childish humour if nothing else.

I don’t think people should be allowed to wear orange clothing. It offends my senses.

Get a grip.

I would love to see the POTUS in orange clothing.

Know what you mean, OP. Very keen sense of smell. Can smell my best friend in the guest room up to around 10 days after she has gone home.

dayslikethese1 · 13/06/2025 22:49

I think it's bad form to spray in the office or to wear so much that ppl can smell it after you've left a room so I'm with you on that one OP. I don't like it when rooms have tonnes of those plugins either, very artificial smelling.

ArtTheClown · 13/06/2025 22:49

Oh, totally. I'm about four years old in terms of how funny I find farts.

Sorry, flatulence.

dayslikethese1 · 13/06/2025 22:51

Saying that, I do enjoy a subtle bit of perfume myself but obviously it's v individual what kinds of smells ppl like or dislike.

I really love perfume. I spend too much on samples - especially of uncommon ones made by some bearded, bespectacled person wearing a sackcloth in a glass lab, and I read Reddit threads discussing things like ‘how to smell like a lunar eclipse as experienced in the Tucson hills’ etc… but I do think people working in close proximity or a closed environment together need to lay off the fabric softeners and other fragrances (and make sure they’re actually showered/clean!).

Have you smelled the perfume nasa made that’s meant to smell like space? It’s vomit inducing but the most bizarre smell underneath it!

This is intriguing, as I don't see any way of having a sniff of that space vacuum without dying instantly. So how would they know?
Or is it eu de space debris or something?

It’s called eau de space 🤣 it’s mainly burnt things but it’s also weirdly sweet. It’s so astronauts don’t freak out at the smell on the international space station etc

That reminds me of cruise ships that sell the "cruise ship" room scent 😂

I work in a large office and I’d rather have perfume than the smell of clothing dried indoors 🤢🤮 . Honestly now it’s getting warmer the smell of sweaty people is vile . We can’t eat out lunch at our desks but the smell of sweaty men in the break out room is just awful . I’ve started sitting in my car or outside if the weather is ok .

Poor you - plus that 'man' smell, when their clothes smell stale.

I have a friend like this — not just perfumes. He once had to live elsewhere for several weeks when there was a pipe issue in his new house causing a smell that was barely detectable to me and which my husband couldn’t smell at all, but which gave him a violent migraine within minutes.

We were once going to a gig together and picked up another friend who’d forgotten and was wearing spray deodorant. The friend scrubbed himself with bottled water and wipes, but the scent-averse friend was pretty much incapacitated within ten minutes in the car, was throwing up in a lay-by, and had to let us go on without him. He has his own company, and there’s a total scent ban in the office.

It’s awful! And yes I swear I smell things other people can’t 🤣

I’m not as bad as your friend by the sounds of it but any very floral perfume has me laying in a dark room throwing up by the end of the day. See also: Bonfire, Smoke in general, Nail Varnish and remover..

We once came home from holiday on a 10 hour flight and the Stewardess was wearing such strong perfume. I couldn’t get away from it so spent the whole flight home asking for more sick bags. Luckily I was sat with my family and not some poor stranger!

Also - can I get a job in this scent free company please. Sounds like a dream

Japan is full of them… ! And yes I know Japan has its problems but at least they know how to be considerate.

NoNameMum · 14/06/2025 10:57

perfume gives me headaches. I can’t wear it, can’t use scented soap on my hands, can’t have reed diffusers in my house, have to be really selective about air fresheners. I don’t mind a subtle scent, but a strong scent can make me really unwell.

Chlorine in swimming pools can cause asthma attacks but removing it would cause more harm.

Interesting that the hospital pool near me has removed the chlorine and has salt instead. It’s part of the orthopaedic treatment options, open to the public.

Aerosols of any kind are banned at my school due to several very scary asthma attacks. I find it quite sensible. I read in some parts of Canada, wearing of perfume is banned in offices, seems very practical for asthmatics.

There was someone wearing Old Spice in Waitrose this morning. Unmistakable. I've had Carmina Burana stuck in my head since then!

It would be a wonderful world if wearing Old Spice in Waitrose meant you attracted spontaneous choral flash mobs singing ‘O fortuna’ while clobbering the wearer with surfboards.

I think a lot of people take it very personally on here :) did it hit the nerve? I was never talking about people using a little bit of perfume. what I am saying is, if someone can smell you across the office, that is too much and should hopefully be clear to people BUT it evidently isn't...

I work in my own office, so no, not remotely.
