What's your ideal sleep pattern?

I've been off work for a while and my sleep pattern is now so different. I'm interested I what everyone's sleep pattern would be if they didn't have to work etc
My pattern :

8.30 - 9.30 pm sleep
9.30-10.15/ awake and have a drink
10.30 - 2.30 am sleep
2.30 - 4am awake, get a hot drink and maybe a snack and watch telly/read
4am- 7.30am sleep

I feel amazing! Like my body is finally doing what it actually needs
Very occasionally ill have an afternoon nap too

Anyone else got a new pattern

I just sleep like a standard person. Bed at 10:30. Sleep until 6 ish. Wake a couple of times to change position.

I don’t know how you fall back to sleep after doing things.

I also don’t know what your AIBU is?

Floursacktabletop · 12/06/2025 22:00

I don't know how I fall back asleep either. When I was at work, I was very much go to bed at 10pm and wake to the alarm at 6am but now I'm.off and the stress has gone, I have fallen into this new pattern. I read somewhere that some people used to sleep in 2 halves in the past (with a waking hour or two in the early hours)
I find it really interesting

Ideally I’d go to bed around 12/1am and sleep till 11am. Maybe an afternoon nap for an hour around 4pm.

I’ve got small children so it’s a distant dream but I work for myself and often end up working quite late at night. I get my best ideas around 10pm.

Floursacktabletop · 12/06/2025 22:05

I can't tell you how much more relaxing it feels to just let my body do what it wants to

I work 9-5 (mostly from home).

My idea sleep pattern would be 11:30pm - 07:30am.

But realistically it’s 2am - 8:50am. 😂

LawAndDisorderSeason3 · 12/06/2025 22:10

That sounds interesting. I know someone who sleeps very little at night, naps through the day bit there and there. It's just how they get the best rest. Always been like that

Mine is single sleep 1am-9am ideal but i start work at 9 so 1-8😕 I do love a nap though if I can for 20 min

TokyoSushi · 12/06/2025 22:23

Just a straight 11pm - about 8am would be great for me, unfortunately work has me up about 6:45am

87yo MIL does similar to you OP, 8:30pm - 1am, gets up and potters about a bit/has a cup of tea and then back until 7am ish

Floursacktabletop · 12/06/2025 22:26

Oh no perhaps I am living an octogenarian life a few decades early 😂

When I read your OP, I was thinking that it sounds like how people used to sleep. I think it was the around the time of the industrial revolution that it changed. Interesting that you've naturally fallen into that pattern given the opportunity.

I used to feel at my best when I slept midnight-8am. I now sleep about 11pm-3am and doze until 7am, if I'm lucky, thanks to my toddler.

Catsandcannedbeans · 12/06/2025 22:28

Back in my day before I had responsibilities I would sleep for hours. All day basically. Get up at 3pm, watch a couple of eps of House Md and then go back to bed. There was almost definitely something medically wrong with me, but I was living.

Now it’s probably bed at 12am up at 8/9am…but with small children that’s just not on the cards. They wake one of us up at 5/6am most days. If it’s pre 6am they have to come cuddle till 6am because I am simply not getting out of bed pre 6am… unconditional love ain’t that unconditional. I can’t really get to sleep before 12am, sometimes 11pm… I should probably get more sleep but to be honest 6 ish hours is pretty good compared to some parents I know so I won’t moan.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 12/06/2025 22:32

I'd hate your pattern, OP! I can't do naps or short bursts of sleep - it makes me feel groggy and horrible! I'm an early waker whether it's a work day or not, and I can't really sleep longer than 7 hours, but I function fine on that. So probably sleep 11pm to 6 am.

TaupeMember · 12/06/2025 22:37

12/12.30am till 8.30/9.15am

I do love a good 9 hours when possible

FedupofArsenalgame · 12/06/2025 23:00

Think ideal would be about 1am till 6/6.30 then 2-4 pm nap. Siesta tine

EggnogNoggin · 12/06/2025 23:25

I'd like to sleep at 10 and wake at 6. Enjoy an hour reading before bed and a quiet morning before the chaos.

Annoyingly I'm really wired lately, even without caffeine or alcohol, and if im lucky I'll sleep 1am-7am with a big catch up snooze once a fortnight (11pm-9am).

I'm not getting tired in the day either. I feel like I should be happy about this (like you are, because my body is doing what it needs) but I miss sleeping at 1030/11.

Seeing the clock creep past midnight with a mind full of thoughts is really boring me now 😆

im hoping its just because its summer.

DrCoconut · 12/06/2025 23:30

I can't seem to go to bed early any more. I developed insomnia almost 15 years ago when I was pregnant and ever since my sleep has not been as good. I get a lie in most Saturdays which is good but normally I sleep about 1 - 7am.

uncomfortablydumb60 · 13/06/2025 00:01

12-4am.. awake for an hour for drink, perhaps read. 5-9am Start my day.
i'm "lucky" that I don't work due to disability
Always been a night owl, never a morning person

WhistleBlower8 · 13/06/2025 00:05

On my days off I generally sleep between midnight and 0700 so I imagine if I didn't work, it would be the same.

I'd love to wake up at 0500 each day and be productive before the kids get up but I struggle enough as it is, having less sleep would kill me off

Horseebooks · 13/06/2025 00:20

Siesta life! Summer I’m 12/1 til 5/6, when not working always a nap in the afternoon for an hour or two and it’s a dream.

Winter is more like 11-7 straight through, tho I do have a 3-5amish awake bit sometimes in winter. I don’t feel as good on this but I struggle in winter anyway a bit.

Ive noticed it much more as I get older and I’m much more predictable. I very rarely set an alarm for the morning, sometimes use one for naps

spikefaithbuffyangel · 13/06/2025 01:26

I’m off work and seem to have settled into 2am - 11am ish

Slatterndisgrace · 13/06/2025 01:37

Being able to go to sleep without a pill. It would be pure bliss to get in to bed, close my eyes and drift off. And wake up refreshed.
