Has David Walliams finally wrecked what was left of his career?

He was part of the taping of the xmas special of WILTY yesterday and did a Nazi salute twice, as "comedy"

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cvg59q1xgv8o

At least the show immediately told him that it was utterly unacceptable and the BBC and production have also condemed him immediately, rather than this coming to light in a few years time.

Combined with this and also being booted off BGT for the way he spoke to contestants, surely there's no way back for him now on telly?

I know this is completely missing the point, but the Xmas special of WILTY is filmed in June !!!!! 🤯
I mean I knew it wasn't live but for some reason I thought it would be filmed in a bit closer to Xmas like in November 😂😂

On The Rest is Entertainment last week Richard Osman was saying that they’re all filmed in June! He’d just finished filming one and was due to start the House of Games one.

That's how I feel about it @Flopistheparentingguru

If its a comedic discussion talking about Nazis and there is context clarifying that you're taking the piss out of them (e.g. Basil Fawlty) then absolutely, go ahead

But in this apparant context? Doing it during a discussion about waving is just friggin weird. There was literally no rhyme or reason. We cannot normalise it. We really cant.

Exactly, The Fawlty towers episode actually has a whole set up where basil has a concussion and should be hospitalised but escapes.

He's trying NOT to mention the war to German guests, but due to the concussion repeatedly does, getting increasingly confused and panicked, eventually building to the goose-stepping scene.

The joke is built around tripping over your words not to offend taken to the extreme, not the fact he goosesteps. On its own without context it isn't funny.

Little Britain was a fantastic comedy programme ruined by dull, humourless virtue signallers.

A world without comedy is somewhat drab however that is unfortunately what some prefer.

It was always complete shite that people pretended was funny so that they could show off that they weren’t a ‘dull, humourless virtue signaller’. See also the Book of Mormon.

You pretty much encapsulate what I said.

I’m glad I don’t live in your world.

Unless it's Bob Mortimer, Victoria C-M or a couple of select stand ups then guests are futile on WILTY, all the show needs to be great is Rob, David and Lee.

As for Walliams, I doubt it'll have ruined him as the man seems to be teflon. I've never felt fully comfortable around him, even when he did that charity swim years ago and have never been able to decide if he is odd or unwell. As time goes on I lean more towards the former.

TheKindPlumHelper · 12/06/2025 14:09

Little Britain was taking the piss out of everyone.. it was all fair game!

IndigoBluey · 12/06/2025 14:09

I’ve always wondered about the claims he is vile. Anyone know the background?

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 12/06/2025 14:12

@JasmineAllen Xmas specials are always filmed in summer. If you ever watch the Christmas special of Live at the Apollo then look closely at the audience, they'll are being wearing t shirts and sun tops!

I saw him post about this on his Instagram page. Cannot wait, bloody love HOG.

Not to defend Walliams generally but there was a time when Nazis and Nazi salutes were all over British comedy, with the general recognition that this was mocking Nazism, not supporting it. I don't know what context Walliams chose to make the salutes in, but I am generally inclined to think that making fun of Nazism is one of the best ways to counteract it.

How was he mocking the Nazi salute?

YABU.

I don't really know what a "Nazi salute" is but I do have a qualification in business management and managerial experience. Walliams should have been reprimanded, told not to do it again and the editors carefully remove that segment from the broadcast edit.

If we keep "cancelling" everyone who says or does something that we don't like, we will end up with no entertainers left.

No one has actually laid out the details, but to be honest, libel laws are a thing.

People make these atrocious claims 🙄

@JasmineAllen no man I like or respect would choose to make a wanking gesture. I don't think it's acceptable actually. Especially since this was a female contestant's segment, discussing her supposed wrist injury.

Good grief, were you clutching at a pearl necklace as you wrote that (no sexual pun intended) 😂

How have you became a presumably adult woman without knowing what a Nazi salute is?

I completely agree. What a shame that humour has to be so heavily moderated these days.

I wasn't alive during World War 2.

I wonder what his excuse might be. I recall a premier league footballer being photographed doing a Nazi salute and his excuse was that it couldn’t have been a Nazi salute as ‘he’d never heard of Hitler or WW2’ ! Think that appeared on HIGNFY as Ian Hislop indicated that said footballer could only ever have watched 11 episodes of Fawlty Towers.

That's hilarious! Reminds me of the time my DS 6 decorated his friends birthday card with swastikas 😁 I thankfully caught it on time.

Absolutley everyone virtue signals, including Donald Trump, Jim Davidson, Tommy Robinson, Andrew Tate or just someone putting up a St Georges Cross or an old golliwog on their pub, they just signal different "virtues".

So when someone like you bemoans virtue signallers, I know it's not the virtue signalling you have a problem with just the virtues signalled.

Sunbeam01 · 12/06/2025 14:25

I can't stand the man.

I put on of his audio books on and had to run in after 10 minutes to turn it off - and I'm not a snowflake.

Nasty content.
