To think a dishwasher will change our lives?

Question285 · 10/06/2025 09:25

Never had a dishwasher before and never thought I needed one. But now, with two small DC, I think it would make a world of difference. DH, who does most of the washing up, disagrees.

So, does anyone have any input? Does having a dishwasher make life better? Is it worth the investment? Will it be so life changing that even my reluctant DH will be persuaded? 😄

Also, any brand suggestions? Is it better to spend more for a top brand? I’ve narrowed it down to two models, a Hisense and an AEG. It’s about £250 difference between them.

I haven’t got a dishwasher, I really want one and imagine it would be life changing. Currently researching how I can fit one on my small kitchen, including how hard is it to change pipes around and move the water meter…..😁

Why would you need to move the water meter? I've got my washing machine and dishwasher next to each other; on the same wall as my sink. The water comes to all of them, and they all drain through the same pipes.

Each to their own but wouldn't choose to live without mine. All sorts go through it, oven shelves, the works. Love my dishwasher and it's better at washing up than I am.

happydayzahead · 10/06/2025 19:43

I always wanted one in our old house but we didn't have the right plumbing and the landlord wouldn't let us change it. But when we moved, there was already a dishwasher here and I love it!!! So much easier.

Talk5 · 10/06/2025 19:50

We had the same chats.
Bought one...never looked back! So much easier with 4 people in the house than washing up by hand. Also time saver when rushing around after 2 kiddos.

Hi there, I am new to mumsnet.

Can anyone can share with me your experiences with cancer treatment at Harrogate hospital as we are new to the area? My hubby was recently diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer and I am desperate to find answers. If anyone can help share your experiences with me, including food, recipes, exercises, alternate therapies and I shall keep an open mind with many thanks well in advance.

DancingDangerously · 10/06/2025 20:18

@NMoy22 I'm sorry to hear you're dealing with this. It'd be best to start your own thread in the correct topic so I'll report your comment and ask MNHQ to move it for you. 💐

Hi @NMoy22 , we’re so sorry that you’re experiencing such a challenging time. We are unable to make a thread on your behalf or move this post as we can only move threads but we do think you’d get some great support from other Mumsnetters if you start a thread…

We are sending you lots of love!

The possibility of an electrical fault and a fire has been given as a reason for not letting these things run overnight or when you’re out of the house.

Admittedly I am mindful of this. When I say ‘overnight’, they’re not generally running when I’m asleep. The dishwasher goes on after dinner, around 8/8.30, takes 3 hours, so it’s usually finishing as I’m nodding off.

I set the washing machine to start at 6.30am which is around the time I’m waking up. So it’s actually running while I’m getting dressed, turfing kids out of bed and getting on with breakfast.

The car is the exception - it starts charging at midnight. The charger is on the garage though, which is some distance from the house, so in the unlikely event that went up in flames it wouldn’t reach us.

I’m more worried about lightning strikes, as this house is the highest point in the village after the church spire. But we do have a lightning conductor.

Hi there, I do not know how to start a thread? Are you able to help?

BashfulClam · 10/06/2025 21:44

i love mine. Everything that he’s washed gets chucked in. There are just two of us but after dinner I had three pans, a pan from lunchtime, several plates from throughout the day, mugs, cutlery. All hidden and off my mind, after dinner I just turn it on, wipe down the worktops and it’s all done. It’s my most hated chore and I was forced to wash dishes as a kid, I hated it.

Flossflower · 10/06/2025 21:46

Yes a dishwasher will change your life!
I am currently on a touring holiday and have stayed in a few self catering houses/apartments. The last one didn’t have a dishwasher. For 5 days we had to hand wash dishes. We both agreed that we would never ever book somewhere again that didn’t have a dishwasher.

Ricoletti · 10/06/2025 21:53

@NMoy22, if you are using the app on your phone, you need to go to the bottom right corner where it says ‘new’ , to make a new thread.

I refuse to live without a dishwasher and I am a family of one.

2ndbestslayer · 11/06/2025 07:12

@NMoy22 if you're using a normal internet page on your phone rather than the app, scroll to the top of the page and click on Talk. This will bring up a list of different topics headings. If you click on Health you'll see there's a cancer topic. Click on it and at the bottom of your screen you should see the option to start a new thread. Hope this helps.

noworklifebalance · 11/06/2025 07:36

Invariably, one of you will develop the perfect system for loading the dishwasher that no-one else in the household will understand, let alone comply despite it being so so simple. Whoever has this system will just need to just take a deep internal breath and let the frustration go, knowing that you are just a superior being.

NewPapaGuinea · 11/06/2025 08:21

Absolutely essential in my eyes. Paid £50 for a second hand one as a “stop gap” after moving house and still going strong. It’s a Siemens.

DEFINITELY get one! Life changer. I got one when I had 3 little children and it was fantastic. Just to be able to put stuff in the dishwasher and not have to wash up 15 times a day!!

I loved my first dishwasher so much I used to pat it and speak loving words to it every time I went past …..

EndorsingPRActice · 11/06/2025 17:33

we've had a miele for 20 years, it still looks new and is brillant. it has a separate cutlery rack and i've had zero problems getting things in and out the other 2 racks, unlike a pp upthread. highly recommend

StripyShirt · 11/06/2025 17:46

How many dirty pots do you create?

Unless you're running a cafe, it can't take much more than ten minutes to wash them by hand. Just enjoy that time to zone out 🙂

Sunburstclocklover · 11/06/2025 18:45

Wouldn't be without mine. Had one for years and never saw it as a luxury. One good thing is now it frees up your DH to run the hoover or mop the kitchen floor in the time he would have been washing dishes!

Funnyduck60 · 12/06/2025 07:34

Depends. How much fo you cook from scratch? Do you bake? Do you use a lot of plastic items? If he's happy leave it for now. Loading dishwashers are a frequent cause of arguments! I don't mind washing up either.

Sw1989 · 12/06/2025 08:29

I don't know how anyone managers without one. I had one even when I lived on my own!

Fuddly24 · 14/06/2025 18:26

Bought one recently after 2/3 years of hand washing up after last one broke. I'm honestly so sad that I didn't buy one earlier. Instead of 30 minutes cleaning up after dinner it's now a quick 5-7 minute shove in machine, set time (use overnight at 7p kwh), wipe down surfaces and back to family time! I've got a Hisense and can't fault it

Yes, do it, get a dishwasher. I have a Neff (my second one), would not be without it.
