To think a dishwasher will change our lives?

Question285 · 10/06/2025 09:25

Never had a dishwasher before and never thought I needed one. But now, with two small DC, I think it would make a world of difference. DH, who does most of the washing up, disagrees.

So, does anyone have any input? Does having a dishwasher make life better? Is it worth the investment? Will it be so life changing that even my reluctant DH will be persuaded? 😄

Also, any brand suggestions? Is it better to spend more for a top brand? I’ve narrowed it down to two models, a Hisense and an AEG. It’s about £250 difference between them.

A tumble dryer is even better!

Surely you have an underc counter cupboard nearish to the drain to sacrifice?

I am already sacrificing one of these cupboards for a water softener (before my sparkly shower gets totally wrecked by lime scale).

I could get one if I get a carpenter to shorten the shelves which span the width of the kitchen (my late MIL put them up and they are special to me - and lovely), then put a fridge/freezer in the freed up space, then put a dishwasher where the current under counter fridge is.

It's just me and DS at home now, so I don't think we need a full sized one, and I also don't have loads and loads of pots and pans.

Dunno.....getting rid of Artex and decorating is higher priority atm.

I agree i could not live without my tumble dryer.

skyeisthelimit · 10/06/2025 14:00

I never run anything overnight. I have had both a dishwasher and a tumble dryer go up in smoke, and was able to prevent a fire each time. A friend lost their house due to a tumble dryer.

I don't watch over them, but am in the house and awake, should anything go wrong.

Fire Brigade advice not to leave appliances unattended is there for a reason.

There are always people who are happy to put stuff on overnight and go to sleep, but some of us have had close shaves that mean we know what can happen.

We have 8 of everything for 2 of us, and that is usually enough, unless the dishes aren't done (looking at you DD), and then we might run out.

I couldn’t be without my dishwasher or my tumble dryer

BIossomtoes · 10/06/2025 14:14

I think you and your friend have had my share of spontaneously combusting appliances as well as your own @skyeisthelimit!

Mooflon12 · 10/06/2025 14:14

It's genuinely completely changed my life. I feel silly saying it but it really really has.
I spent my whole adult life without one until last year and I couldn't live without one again. And with young kids it's so much more hygienic. I'm excited for you! 😂

Why are people ‘waiting around for it to finish’? Is this like people who dismiss electric cars because it takes a while to charge, and ‘it only takes ten minutes to pull in at a service station and fill up with petrol’?

I suppose it’s just a different way of living isn’t it? I like to set my electricals to do their thing slowly overnight, and wake up in the morning to a dishwasher full of clean crockery, a fully charged car and a washing machine finishing off its cycle while I eat my breakfast. I have got used to not having to take time out of my day to do these things manually. But clearly others prefer it!

Different perceptions of what’s efficient I guess 🤷‍♀️

It’s not waiting around, it’s just a split job to me. Put it in and then get it all out to put away later.

I’ve just made me and dd lunch. When we finished, I washed up two plates, a chopping board, a knife, quickly dried them with a towel and put back in the cupboard. Took minutes.

If I had a dish washer, it wouldn’t be filed until the evening then I’d have a whole heap of stuff to put away. I prefer to do things quickly as I go.

Ricoletti · 10/06/2025 16:15

Absolute game changer !! I love my dishwasher, it’s genuinely one of the most important appliances in my house and I would replace/repair immediately if it broke.

I empty it every morning while my coffee is brewing, so through the day breakfast dishes/packed lunch prep , any lunch dishes and then the evening pans and dishes go straight in there… then it gets switched on every night ready to empty the next day.

I didn’t have one for a few years and hated there always being dishes (clean or dirty ) stacked up in my kitchen.

My sink and surrounding areas are always clean and clear- which makes a quick kitchen clean so much easier.

if you can afford it defo go for it. You won’t look back!

Question285 · 10/06/2025 10:15

Any thoughts on Hisense? With DH not fully on board I’d rather not spend extra, but also want a decent dishwasher that won’t break after a year and hear ‘I told you so’

I’ve just had a look on Which? Top at 82% were Miele & Bosch, followed by Beko & Hisense at 81%. Careful though, as the ratings are for specific models.

BirminghamRose50 · 10/06/2025 17:15

Absolutely ! We have an AEG atm and no complaints ( having said that we've had both Hotpoint and Zanussi and they were great!). Just bare in mind hubby might become an authority on ' the right way to stack everything'😂

MadKittenWoman · 10/06/2025 17:19

Yes, it’s life-changing. Do it!

cookiemon666 · 10/06/2025 17:21

Would never be without one

OriginalUsername2 · 10/06/2025 17:22

Another vote for life changing.

You can wash all your fridge compartments in there too.

YourRealAquaOP · 10/06/2025 17:27

I always said I wouldn't get one but now I wouldn't do without it.Make sure you always use good quality tablets dishwasher salt and rinse cheaper ones are rubbish and don't do the job properly so are false economy.Weve got a Beko.

Evaka · 10/06/2025 17:29

Omg get on now!!! Just bought our first flat which came with a dinky little half dishwasher and I'm beside myself. Everything is properly clean and no more minging pile up next to the sink every few hours.

Redpeach · 10/06/2025 17:30

If i was redoing our kitchen I'd get a double dish washer

Aha whole heap of stuff... LOL

You'd have 6 plates/bowls which would take the exact same amount of time to put away as doing it 3 times. In fact quicker.

I put 4 plates away at any one time from dishwasher.

You'd be fine

Wingingitbestican · 10/06/2025 17:39

I never thought I needed a dishwasher. DH bought one as a surprise one day . Now wouldn’t be without it - game changer. Add to that - boiling water tap , also game changer

sheldonRockz · 10/06/2025 17:40

I haven’t got a dishwasher, I really want one and imagine it would be life changing. Currently researching how I can fit one on my small kitchen, including how hard is it to change pipes around and move the water meter…..😁

nightmarepickle2025 · 10/06/2025 17:49

do it don’t let him be a martyr!

Alliod40 · 10/06/2025 17:58

Have one in my kitchen 14 years used it once and thought what a faff,I've brought up 4 children and never felt the need,I cater for massive family events still wouldn't use it,ridiculous waste of money

Daddyoffive · 10/06/2025 17:58

Life-changing, that's a big one, life enhancing, for sure.
We wouldn't be without ours.

coxesorangepippin · 10/06/2025 18:20

Yup

That and a tumble dryer

Batmannequin · 10/06/2025 18:44

Go for it, it changed our lives. Lived for years without one and when we moved house 18 months ago, it actually had space for one. First thing I bought and never regretted it. I despise washing dishes and every now and then as I'm stacking the dishwasher I think to myself "god, I'm so glad I've got one."
