To say the £35k winter fuel threshold is way too high!

chocolateismyweakness4 · 09/06/2025 13:21

The threshold needed to be raised, but £35k?! I wish I earned that and I have a mortgage and commuting costs. It also doesn’t take into account savings (so they could have millions in the bank) or household income.

We all know it’s a bribe, but they still won’t get pensioners to vote for them.

Really? I’m old enough to know quite a few despite not yet being one myself, and that’s not my experience.

Yes, really. 61, husband is 66.

Sanguinello · 09/06/2025 15:28

I think it's OK. It's shocking the tories were throwing heating allowance at people who were stinking rich and earning far more than that though. They were continually throwing money at pensioners to bribe them while taking away from the young. Underfunding schools, getting young people who wanted higher education into more debt and for longer etc.

Koalafan · 09/06/2025 15:26

A lot of pensioners aren't at home all day though.

Well they aren’t at work all day, are they? I’m retired (early, not a pensioner as I said) and I’m out a lot, but I’m still home loads more than when I worked full time.

Koalafan · 09/06/2025 15:28

cardibach · 09/06/2025 15:21

In what way? Boomers didn’t make the decision.
Would you be happy taking any other group and declaring they all had the same negative characteristic?
Many pensioners aren’t boomers anyway, and not all boomers are pensioners.
I’m not a boomer or a pensioner, incidentally. I’m just not ageist.

Edited

I didn't say all pensioners, boomers are a specific group of entitled pensioners within an age group.

Shame. The ones I know are like normal people, they all have different views on things, and none are ‘youth of today’ moaners.

But it’s not just boomers getting it, is it? Why blame them?

Ageism really is the last acceptable prejudice, it seems from some on this thread.

Edited

It's not ageism to point out that a certain group of entitled pensioners exist. Nobody said it was all pensioners.

This is absolutely ridiculous and I have voted Labour my whole life but they are just continually testing my patience . My parents will get it back now and there is absolutely no reason for them too, they are super comfortable. Yes, give winter fuel payments to people who need it, do not give it to people who do not need it.

Labour introduced the universal WFA. But suddenly you are up in arms about it being paid to anyone with a gross income of under 35K? Why was it not a concern to you before?

All people born between 1946 and 1964 are entitled and greedy? All of them? Would you feel ok saying this about any other whole group?

I didn't say all pensioners, boomers are a specific group of entitled pensioners within an age group.

I was under the impression it was a demographic category not an all encompassing term of insult ? "Baby Boomers are generally considered to be individuals born between 1946 and 1964"

Koalafan · 09/06/2025 15:31

cardibach · 09/06/2025 15:25

What is? That not all boomers are rich? I can sure you that’s just a fact.

Not all of any group is rich.

Yes, it is.

We’re retiring soon to a diverse city: currently in a regional, very traditional small coastal town with a very specific demographic. Hoping attitudes will be broader. Gets us down, atm, tbh.

It originally was, it's now morphed to mean the particularly entitled element of that age group. Boomer has come to mean more than just baby boomer.

Oligarchs? Politicians? Reality tv “stars”? 😁

YABU - £35k isn't much money at all these days.

It is for a pensioner whose mortgage is paid off etc!

CaptainMyCaptain · 09/06/2025 13:26

It's more than I earned as a teacher after tax when I was working. I am now retired and not one of the people who complained when I didn't get the Winter Fuel payment. I think the threshold was too low before but I was surprised to learn it is now this high.

I have no strong feelings either way, as better off pensioners were being taxed on it anyway. The government, in its wisdom, seems to have created a complicated system to save £500 million, with no thought to how much was being recovered anyway or how much will be spent on yet another means test threshold. But I don’t see how comparing a gross income of £35k to an after tax income is helpful

Entitled parents is frequently used as phrase, often by entitled boomers.

Of those examples, I’d probably be ok with a bit of prejudice against oligarchs! Not the rest though.
