AIBU for making DD go to school tomorrow (after Duke of Edinburgh)

DD (age 14) did DoE this weekend - she walked a long way and has a couple of blisters. Finished the walk 3pm Saturday and has spent all her time on the sofa gaming and complaining about the blisters since then.

She says that her friends are all staying home on Monday to recover and that I am a cruel and unfeeling mother for making her go in. She has an unavoidable 20 min walk to / from school and a PE lesson on Monday. Her attendance is normally 99% (because I'm a cruel mother and make her attend with a cold, and because she doesn't actually get ill much).

So

AIBU - I am normally too cruel and should let DD play games with her feet in a water bath all Monday

AINBU - 14 year olds can cope with blisters and need resilience. send her in.

I’d let her have a day off , assuming she’s finished her end of year exams and she won’t miss anything important.

Ablondiebutagoody · 08/06/2025 21:55

She's had a day and a half to rest from the walk. Send her in

FeebasAquarium · 08/06/2025 21:55

I must be really wicked as one of my sons did DofE mon-wed last week and was back at school on Thursday, and also has a twenty minute walk to and from. Honestly didn’t occur to me (or him in fairness) that he’d have the day off 🤷🏻‍♀️

ColonelRhubarbBikini · 08/06/2025 21:55

I am the cruel mother who made DS2 wait at school all smelly and knackered after his silver instead of pull him out for the afternoon and get an unauthorised absent mark so if I were you I’d send her.

Could you maybe soften the blow slightly and pop her in a taxi to school?

Notaripoff · 08/06/2025 21:56

I think she'll be fine. She's had all day today to rest and recover. I thought it was standard to go in after DofE weekend.

DepositSaverUpper · 08/06/2025 21:56

Let her wear trainers with a note as to why.
Plasters for blisters
Maybe a note for no pe.
But I'd send them

Wolfiefan · 08/06/2025 21:56

She got home yesterday afternoon and has chilled out since then. Give her some blister plasters and get her to crack on.

Blink1982 · 08/06/2025 21:56

Send her in, give her some plasters. I did doe as a youngsters and I wasn't given days off she'll be fine

misspiggy100 · 08/06/2025 21:57

I sent my daughter into school
the day after DofE as I didn’t feel that she was sick or impaired! She said that she was tired all day but she got through it without any lasting trauma!! Sometimes I think that kids have to learn to just suck it up and get on with it but that’s just me ! 😀

BirdsAreMuchLoved · 08/06/2025 21:58

Id send her in but send a note to excuse her from PE.

paranoiaofpufflings · 08/06/2025 21:59

She should go to school but I’d give her a note to skip PE. You are obviously not a cruel mother, well done. School attendance is so important and sets up good habits for life. Imagine staying off work because of a blister!

MigGril · 08/06/2025 21:59

She's had a whole day to rest. DD went straight into school after her Bronze and also didn't need much rest after her Gold practice expedition either.

They are young and fit and she has had a whole day's rest already. She shouldn't need anymore.

Rumpoleoftheballet · 08/06/2025 22:06

Absolutely send her in with some blister plasters. My DC went in with aching legs and feet along with everybody else.

KnittingOnEmpty · 08/06/2025 22:08

A day off school for a couple of blisters is pathetic, of course she needs to go in!

Pbjsand · 08/06/2025 22:11

From experience they all say that “everyone’s” not going in on Monday, but that’s not the case.

PeppyLilacLion · 08/06/2025 22:13

Send her in an uber and give her a note for PE. If her attendance is 99% then I do think you are being a bit harsh for one day.

rainbowunicorn · 08/06/2025 22:14

I can't actually believe anyone would even consider this. Both of mine were in scouts right up to explorer scouts and young leaders. The regularly did weekend hikes, long walks camps etc where they were on the go from the Friday teatime to late afternoon on the Sunday. They never had time off for anything like that.
They also played competitive sport that involved training several times a week and being away for weekends.
What has happened to resilience?

ShesTheAlbatross · 08/06/2025 22:15

3pm saturday?? Why would other people not being going in?

TheNightingalesStarling · 08/06/2025 22:16

The whole point is learning resilience.
They've had a whole day's rest.

1543click · 08/06/2025 22:16

Of course she goes in. How ridiculous.

2chocolateoranges · 08/06/2025 22:18

Mine would be getting sent in, she’s had a full day of rest today.

MandarinsAreNotTheOnlyFruit · 08/06/2025 22:21

Mine finished at 5pm on Sunday, and was in school at 8.30 the next morning. I did drive her in due to the blisters.

My eldest did the Ten Tors training as well, and never missed any school. That was much harder than D of E. It’s all about resilience, and letting them know that they are stronger than they thought.

Blondebrownorred · 08/06/2025 22:21

DS has done bronze and silver and has always gone back to school the next day. Didn't even enter my mind that he wouldn't.

Bourbonversuscustardcream · 08/06/2025 22:26

She can’t seriously be thinking you’re going to phone school and say she’s absent because she’s tired and got a blister or two, surely?! Maybe excused PE if she really can’t run, depending on the sport being played, but otherwise she needs to just get on with it and stop being pathetic. If it’s that much of an ordeal maybe DoE is not for her.

I’d imagine all her friends are actually going in tomorrow too.

Ddakji · 08/06/2025 22:27

Send her in with a wodge of plasters.
