To think you have to exaggerate and move companies to progress in some roles?

The company I work for has really good benefits and pays comparatively well so I would prefer not to leave. I have however been in my current ‘entry’ level role for 5 years now.
Whenever a higher role is available it is nearly always given to an external candidate. The feedback is always the same you did well but they have more practical experience. I already do a lot above my role to try and prove I can do the higher roles but there are certain elements I can not do at my level. Quite a few colleagues in my role have left moving to a higher position in another company.
Recently discussing this with friends who asked why I don’t do the same and ‘exaggerate’ my experience to an external company. Apparently it’s normal?

Very normal! Just don't stretch the truth too far. You want it to be close enough that if it's asked about in a reference check it'll at most raise an eyebrow, not illicit an outright "no, actually..."
