I've got so fed up waiting for the scaffolder to take his completely in the way scaffolding down, stopping me from finishing other works, etc, etc - I put his scaffolding as a FREE item on my local FB Marketplace.

Some responses have said I can't do that and my response is what else is a lady to do?

I've had some offers to take it down, AIBU?

I think you would be on dicey ground if you did. But I don't know the legalities.

I will say though I totally sympathise with you because when I had my replaced roof a few years ago the problem I had getting the scaffolding taken down was unbelievable. The roofer had hired it, or borrowed it, from a scaffolding firm and after he'd finished the roof - which was a bit of a cowboy job as it turned out- he basically washed his hands of the scaffolding and left me to try and get the scaffolder to take it down. Don't know why they didn't need it for another job.
Yet another example of workmen and firms treating women who live by themselves as idiots that they can mess about .

Whyx · 06/06/2025 20:56

Call the scaffolding company and tell them Jonny Smith and some other lads are here to take the scaffolding down. You just wanted to check how long the job would take as Jonny didn't seem very forthcoming to questions... They'll be round like a shot. I've heard of scaffolding getting nicked a few times. If the scaffold company knows what's best for them they'll try to avoid that!

ChonkyRabbit · 06/06/2025 20:57

Scaffolders are notorious for this. If you're bringing them in, get it written in the contract that it must be gone by X date or you'll be entitled to £x per day storage fee.

Hopefully a lawyer can advise what you can legally do now.

Dangermoo · 06/06/2025 20:57

😆 🤣 😂 way to go OP but it's still his property.

Chickenhorse · 06/06/2025 21:00

Call the scaffolder and tell him that a couple of the poles are hanging down and you are worried they are going to fall on someone’s head, then ask him if he has public liability insurance. See how fast he comes to get it then.

TheHateIsNotGood · 06/06/2025 21:15

I've had a few offers to take it down and whilst understanding there might be a 'legal' problem here and there I think involving any legals in the matter wouldn't be the first port of call for the scaffolder or me.

My only concern is some kind of scaffolder 'stand-off' in the street (not really), even then that would be what is classed as 'street entertainment' round these parts.

It's actually fucking funny how the local FB pages have taken this on. I've got an early start tomo so am letting it all get on whilst I go to bed.

My aim is that someone tells him to get his scaffolding as the cray, cray, elder single woman in Godforbid Road is getting rid of it for him.

We had some left for three months at our. We moved during COVID we were in rented and just left it there. Got fed up of asking for it to be removed. I text him and said we are moving May 5th you best come get it. He didn't.

MoominMai · 06/06/2025 21:29

def take legal advice but I think you’re meant to email the person and give them a deadline and advise the date by which you will have it removed and then given to someone else for non profit.

ConstantCringing · 07/06/2025 13:03

Probably too late now, but don't pay the bill until it's gone?

Ilovelowry · 07/06/2025 13:05

See also digger hire. We had a digger on our drive for 3 weeks. They use you as free storage.

Richandstrange · 07/06/2025 13:15

Too late now but I would just ring the scaffolders and say I just wanted to check the guys currently taking the scaffolding down are actually from their company as they had no ID/signwriting on their van and you're a bit concerned, they'll be round like a shot!

Honestly the only way. I’ve started doing this on every job - 50% upfront and 50% after snagging. Cuts out so much hassle.

Otherwise, inform in writing that it will be removed and placed in storage by such a date, and he can retrieve it at his own inconvenience on payment of the storage and removal costs.

BeNiceWhenItsFinished · 07/06/2025 13:19

From what I vaguely remember from somewhere or other, some scaffolding firms don't have their own storage yard, so they leave everything on-site at a finished job until it is needed somewhere else. Then they dismantle it, and take it straight there to the new site.

Reallybadidea · 07/06/2025 13:20

Nice one!

Years ago we hired a skip for a couple of weeks and despite repeatedly asking for it to be collected, the company left it sitting on our drive for over 6 weeks. A friend told me that a common tactic to avoid having to store the empty ones is to leave them with a customer until someone else orders one.

So I called the skip company (witholding my phone number) and ordered a skip of the same size to a fictitious house - the road existed, but the number did not. The skip was gone the very next day 😀

pikkumyy77 · 07/06/2025 13:22

Honest question: why isn’t it considered abandoned by now? Why can’t she put it in FB?

HouseHouseHouse7 · 07/06/2025 13:26

I honestly don’t know if it’s a “lone woman” thing. My parents and various other people have had the issue of equipment being stored at their place until the owner needs it elsewhere.

Hopefully he will see the ad on Facebook OP and collect it!

Richandstrange · 07/06/2025 13:46

Do he or his company have a profile/page on FB OP? You could tag him in your post if so, bet that would make him come and collect it! Grin

StevieNic · 07/06/2025 13:50

I wrote a message to mine telling them that as they had abandoned the scaffolding on my property 5 weeks after the job was finished I was now the owner, and I was selling it on eBay the next day if it wasn’t gone. He came and took it down right away.

JenniferBooth · 07/06/2025 14:03

When scaffolders took the scaffolding down from my friends HA property after new windows were fitted they were just throwing the scaffolding down from the top of ladders into the car park and narrowly missed his car twice. Its only two storey but they still couldnt be bothered to even walk halfway down the ladder. I banged on the window and mouthed WTF and that stopped it. Lazy bastards.

GivingUpFinally · 07/06/2025 14:08

I had similar and it was approaching 5 weeks of it being up and in my way. I called the company and told them a reasonable amount of time had passed and I had contacted them every week since the job was complete etc etc. Anyway, I told them that I was drawing up paperwork to charge them a standing rent and storage fee for using my property as such. It was down by the end of the next day.

Update: I finally dared turn my laptop on this evening to an Inbox filled with FB responses (nb: not an SM fan and only dip in and out) which I deleted without reading except one today from the scaffolder. Not a happy chap - I did reply that it's only a bit of 'banter' after all and I look forward to seeing him this week. Refreshments will be available.
