To ask if boys can wear coloured gingham school shorts?

DS starting school in September. I’ve never liked the grey boys’ school shorts. I think they’re horrible.

Could a boy wear the shorts version of the summer dresses in the warmer months? The ones like this:

The little boys round here wear a lot of brightly coloured patterned leggings.

Why couldn’t they were these shorts? Are they obviously girly? Would people bully him or think we were weird? I just think they’re nicer.

At our school a boy in gingham would stand out because largely, small boys do not care what they wear, so would find an active choice to not wear grey "weird". It would be perceived as a deliberate choice to wear babyish/girly clothing, with school boys tend to frown upon.

NewsdeskJC · 06/06/2025 08:17

I think he would be bullied. It's not a risk you should run on behalf of a 4 year old

Not sure you're familiar with actual facism.

The examples I’m thinking of were quite pro uniform. There’s a reason scouts don’t do uniform in Germany.

The only countries that have school uniform are Britain (and its former colonies) and totalitarian states. Apart from in some private schools.

Most European countries and US: no school uniform.

Some parts of the UK don't have uniform. My son's schools didn't.

cramptramp · 06/06/2025 08:19

Good grief, don’t start his school life by trying to make him stand out from his peers. If you think this is a good idea I feel sorry for him. Poor child.

In the city down the road from us I think it’s 50% of primary schools now.

Eh?
Edit - here's some actual info re Scouts in Germany, none of which backs up your gingham shorts idea.

I doubt they'll be allowed as per school uniform, if your school is strict
Mine used to stipulate black shorts, length etc
Also most kids just want to fit in and dress exactly the same Grin especially being a new starter.

our school are very strict and they explicitly say both girls and boys are welcome to wear the summer uniform as long as they wear it properly. Gingham dresses or shorts must be worn with white socks and grey skirts/shorts with grey socks etc.

I suppose if you take it to a logical extreme it’s all a bit North Korea matching haircuts.

😂😂 a bit bored this morning are we?!

Just put him in the school uniform of the school you’ve signed him up to. There are times in life when rules apply and it does no harm for children to learn this from a young age. I suspect this is more about what you want than what he wants.

The PP has said nothing about any child(ren) they might have, meanwhile you want to send you child to school in bloomers?

Op it’s a uniform.

It’s designed to make sure children have practical, easy care clothing that doesn’t make some feel left out because their mum makes them wear grey shorts while another boy is in the gingham bloomer things, or vice versa. Children honestly tend not to mind conformity as much as adults.

Ours have green gingham short sleeved shirts for the boys. They actually look super smart! But the shorts …. Erm no!

Cycleaway · 06/06/2025 08:21

It’s up to you and your son, but I think if it were me, I’d probably put the effort in to finding grey shorts made from lovely comfortable fabric rather than battling with the school about the gingham ones, which when it comes down to it are probably really nylony fabric and maybe not that nice to wear either.

Cross posted! I thought they looked like bloomers too!

Blinkingbother · 06/06/2025 08:22

Are you really that desperate for attention? You are unreasonable for wishing to put your own fashion choices and agenda over your son’s.

NewBinBag · 06/06/2025 08:23

I have older primary boys. I get that their choice of high street clothes is a dull range of maroon, grey, navy and khaki for summer. It is indeed depressing.

But whether we like it or not, gendered clothing does currently exist & those are 100% girls shorts.
As PP said - if he feels strongly that he likes the gingham that's one thing, but putting him in them just because you don't like grey shorts is completely another. This is a kids preference first situation.

Aside from that, the gingham bloomers are not a good-looking alternative anyway.

Katiesaidthat · 06/06/2025 08:23

Makingitupaswegoalong · 06/06/2025 07:23

Do you think he would be bullied? Why?

Because there are some nasty fuckers out there who will hone in on anything that makes anyone different and give them hell about it. I am wondering if you live under a rock. Just use the grey or choose a different school with a uniform that pleasures your fashion sense.

Makingitupaswegoalong · 06/06/2025 08:24

It was just a thought! Anyway we’re off to swimming.

All this talk of bullying but honestly, why aren't we more cross that most boys spend summers at school sweltering due to unsuitable clothing?

Makingitupaswegoalong · 06/06/2025 07:42

I suppose older children could pick on the younger ones at playtime.

They shouldn’t be with them at playtime. EYFS should have their own outdoor space.

I wouldn’t put a girl in them out of choice tbh.

They aren’t that “ colourful” anyway.

Might be sweet on a toddler boy I guess.
