To ask if boys can wear coloured gingham school shorts?

DS starting school in September. I’ve never liked the grey boys’ school shorts. I think they’re horrible.

Could a boy wear the shorts version of the summer dresses in the warmer months? The ones like this:

The little boys round here wear a lot of brightly coloured patterned leggings.

Why couldn’t they were these shorts? Are they obviously girly? Would people bully him or think we were weird? I just think they’re nicer.

If you want them bullied. Have you asked your son what he wants?

TheNightingalesStarling · 06/06/2025 07:21

They end up stained in no time.

School uniforms are grey for practicality not to look nice.

I doubt they'll be allowed as per school uniform, if your school is strict
Mine used to stipulate black shorts, length etc
Also most kids just want to fit in and dress exactly the same Grin especially being a new starter.

So why do the girls wear them?

The key word here is "little". School boys don't.

I think it would look very weird and invite a lot of probably unwanted (by your son) comment. School age children want to fit in with their peers.

What does your ds want?

Purpleturtle43 · 06/06/2025 07:22

I'm a teacher and have never seen anyone wear those shorts. You would need to check the school uniform policy. Does your son hate the grey ones or just you?

babystarsandmoon · 06/06/2025 07:23

No school boy is wearing those.

Smartiepants79 · 06/06/2025 07:24

Well they can wear whatever you like in a way. They can wear the gingham dress if you want. Doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a good idea. I’d check with school before you buy anything.
other people are right though. They’ll be trashed very quickly.
And school uniform isn’t really about the aesthetic.

InfoSecInTheCity · 06/06/2025 07:24

Your son is 4ish if he’s due to start school soon, what does he want to wear? How you feel about the shorts surely isn’t the issue. Does he want to wear gingham shorts or grey shorts?

personally unless my child felt very very strongly about wanting to wear something non-conforming I wouldn’t choose to put them in an item of clothing that’s going to make them deliberately the odd one out, but that’s my opinion.

That’s a big and judgemental assumption to make on pretty much nothing.

There are several primary schools round here. I've seen children express themselves in all sorts on non uniform days. No boy has ever been seen in those shorts. I don't think I know any child that would be tbh

Notyourfaultbutmine · 06/06/2025 07:25

You'd need to check the schools uniform policy - they usually stipulate colours, and when summer v winter uniform should be worn.
Also don't make him the one boy that's different - like the boy whose mum put him in the school cardigan instead of sweatshirt and all the other boys told him he was wearing girls clothes (at my DCs primary)

MonTuesWeds · 06/06/2025 07:25

Makingitupaswegoalong · 06/06/2025 07:23

Do you think he would be bullied? Why?

Kids are evil and will pick on any difference

If your son wants to that's cool. If you want him to - then - I don't really understand why you'd make him a target at worst or at best feel other.

throwawaynametoday · 06/06/2025 07:25

Absolutely do not buy these for your son.

Personally I think there should be no such thing as gendered clothing, especially for children, but back on planet earth I would not be sending my 5 year old son to school in gingham.

Elisheva · 06/06/2025 07:25

Makingitupaswegoalong · 06/06/2025 07:23

Do you think he would be bullied? Why?

Because he would be wearing girls’ shorts. It doesn’t matter how much adults say that anyone can wear any clothes, school age kids are already socialised into gender norms.

Ponoka7 · 06/06/2025 07:25

No they can't, unless they are over ten and have a understanding of the consequences and still really want to wear them.
This isn't about what you like. You aren't wearing them. When you say the boys wear bright leggings, are they the graffiti type pattern? That's a sub culture of a trend.
Put him in what the other boys are wearing and what is traditional. He's a seperate person to you.

Daysgo · 06/06/2025 07:25

Feel sorry for your ds. Just dress him in the same uniform as the other boys. Let him dress how he wants out of school. School can be hard enough without deliberately making him stick out for wearing wrong uniform.

Smartiepants79 · 06/06/2025 07:25

You understand those shorts are being sold for girls? That maybe doesn’t matter to you but it’s unlikely that any of the rest of the boys will choose them.

AlohaRose · 06/06/2025 07:26

Who cares if you don't like grey school shorts? They're not a fashion item, the uniform is meant for practicality. What does your DS want to wear?

TheNightingalesStarling · 06/06/2025 07:26

Makingitupaswegoalong · 06/06/2025 07:22

So why do the girls wear them?

Because society decided its more important for girls uniform to look cute and pretty rather than be practical. So it curtains their playing. Meanwhile the boys can slide across the grass and climb without worrying about their clothes.

LavenderBlue19 · 06/06/2025 07:26

Are they actually allowed as part of the uniform? If it's stated that girls can wear them then they should let boys too. But ours is grey shorts only.

I agree that they're horrible, but by school age children do want to fit in. Also no school age boys wear leggings, despite them being very common at nursery. A shame but they want to look like their mates.
