Sophie Ellis-Bextor concert. Ugh

Saw her last week. Good fun. I missed the opportunity to wear my glittery Christmas dress though.

We all know she has legs that go on for days and likes to show them off (so would I if I had them!). At various points during the show she had to bend over (dropped something and so on). Every single time, at least one man wolf whistled. One man started and then others thought it was OK to join in.

I mean, really? They weren't sat near me or I would have said something. It pissed me right off. We were there to sing and dance to a bit of disco and grotty men insist on making their thoughts knoen about how attractive she is. As if anyone cares.

Most of the audience were 50+ which somehow made it even more grim.

Yuk just yuk.

Fucking hell. Women really have no hope if this is the call coming from inside the house.

She doesn't 'perform with her knickers on show'. She wears sequinned leotards, short dresses etc, because she has fucking amazing legs and by time time we hit our mid 40s most of us know how to dress to accentuate our best features. She wears tinsel capes, sequins and glitter eyeshadow - classic dressing for the straight male gaze obviously 🙄

Even if she did wear just her pants though that doesn't make old fashioned sexual harassment or 'she was asking for it' comments ok.

Absolutely this. But she is selling a product. Disco is a very camp, OTT genre. Ellis Bextor is a disco performer and conforms to that aesthetic simply because that's the coding audiences of that music have bought into since its infancy in the 70s. People buy music or film on the basis of genre, and its 'dress code' if you can call it that is glittery, OTT, revealing, and uber-kitsch. Compare Kylie, ABBA, Alcazar: even the Bee Gees with their silly chest medallions and super-tight pants (who ofc escape criticism being men). Yes, she 'knows what she's doing' in the sense that she knows her target audience and plays the game accordingly. It's not a case of 'she was asking for it' - incidentally disco is far from my cup of tea and I think for her age she looks terrific.

The sexism on this thread is equally OTT - so much so that much of it probably isn't genuine but a regurgitation of the usual incel vibe found elsewhere on the net, like Reddit. I suspect half the posters on this thread are wind-up merchants, here to tell women off for any refusal to pander to the Mighty Penis.

These days they're common MN parlace and tediously predictable.

50 year old heterosexual men at a S E B concert seems weird in itself.

Last year SEB was touring with T'Pau and the Human League. It was a brilliant gig and absolutely my 50+ DH came too. In fact, he bought the tickets.

SEB isn't really our sort of music but I have to say she was great at getting the crowd up and dancing, and having a good time. Carol Decker got wolf whistled once and she just paused, looked out at the crowd and said: 'Really?'

I've heard it all now. Perhaps they should be make to take a fucking i.q. test before they're allowed to buy a ticket for a gig. No, sorry, you're disqualified, from this and similar cheesy disco tinged music gigs, for being too fick. This thread really is the gift that keeps on giving. 😅

Member869894 · 05/06/2025 17:36

It's all about context. This is a staged bit iof fun. She's very much.aware and very in control

LilyRose88 · 05/06/2025 18:11

I saw her last night in Brighton and she did the kicky leg thing and wore her usual sequin short dress and then changed into her green sequin leotard with lots of fringing. Not once did anyone wolf whistle her. It was a fun performance with lots of disco hits, so its definitely not a set-up part of her show.

There's always a dipropionate amount of women on here who seem to suffer sexual harassment every time they leave the door! Every interaction with a man seems to leave them feeling vulnerable and harrased!

If you read what people are writing you’ll see that nobody has says what you are suggesting.

The most surprising thing for me about this thread is that Sophie EB was able to fill a concert venue. I'd assume it was either a very small venue or it was a free event. 😄

She is doing a full sold out tour to "proper venues". Ive just looked and she has 7 albums (including double platinums) plus albums with remixes etc. She has won Brit awards.

I just quite like a few of her songs and she was near me.

She can wear exactly what she wants, but she was also fully aware of the fact that wearing a very short skirt and bending over would illicit the exact reaction she was looking for and encouraging!

Yes, poor men are animal-like and can’t possibly be expected to control their misogynistic urges 🙄

PuzzledPartridge · 05/06/2025 21:28

It was a wolf whistle at a concert. I think some of you need to get a grip. You & your children are going to hear worse than this. There are going to be young women calling you Karens for being so serious.

I remember a fan holding up a poster at a Take That concert back in the day:

Point your erections in my direction!

Yup. Along with 'Give Good Feeling to me', 'Do What U Like to me' and the pretty blatant 'f* me (insert boybander's name here)'. Guess what: no one batted an eyelid.

To be honest, I think we've lost our sense of humour when it comes to flirting, banter etc, that people are frightened of making any advances for fear of being accused of being a predator.

My guess is SEB knew exactly what she was doing, got exactly the reaction she wanted from doing it - and men are not predators for responding.

TipsyRaven247 · 05/06/2025 21:36

Sure, because we all know teenage girls never go wild when they see a boy band up close.

She's at the Royal Albert Hall next week. It's almost sold out 😁

Yeah, I’ve heard and personally experienced much worse. Doesn’t mean I don’t feel it’s important to challenge the low level stuff.
And Karen is an awful misogynistic slur.

No we’ve not lost our sense of humour. It’s just that people (mainly women) are more likely to call out inappropriate sexual behaviour. That is a good thing.
If you are unable to express yourself without doing it in a sexually inappropriate manner then you need to take a look at yourself.

There was a thread recently where the OPs husband had made an inappropriate comment to a colleague. The thread was full of people claiming ‘ you can’t say anything anymore’. Which is bollocks. Just don’t say of behave in a sexually inappropriate way. It’s really not difficult.

Chiseltip · 06/06/2025 07:50

Jesus OP, you've never been to a Robbie Williams.concert have you.

Literally thousands of women, screaming at him, throwing their bras at him, shoving their tits in his face and asking him to sign them.

Believe me, women are far worse than men when it comes to stuff like their.

There's even a video of his Knebworth concert on YouTube where a woman is brought on stage to sing with him and she gropes his arse without so much as a consensual thought!

Imagine if a man did that to a female singer! Oh the humanity!

Couldn't disagree more. What you call 'sexually inappropriate' some of us would call sexually liberated. SEB - in fact any woman - is allowed to express herself how she sees fit!

I’m a sexually liberated as they come but I can manage to be that way without resorting to sexual harassment. There is no excuse for sexual harassment - man or woman.

I’m a member of Skirt Club which means I attend events which are focused on sex and female sexuality. In my 10 years of membership I’ve managed to express that I’m sexually attracted to other members without being inappropriate or sexually harassing anyone.
Nobody is saying you can’t express yourself but that shouldn’t include sexually harassing other people.

Could you imagine this today, or is different because he’s a man? I’ve been to lots of Take That concerts and you are absolutely right, I’m personally jealous of this girl, hopefully one day he’ll notice my tits!!Jokes obviously but I’m sure if Robbie Williams ever felt in danger he’d have security sort it, same with any stage performance.

Was it her fault for wearing the short skirt so the poor ickle men couldn't help themselves?

Those damn women wanting to celebrate their bodies and or even just wear the clothes they want. I shall write to her management company straight away and insist on her only wearing baggy floor length skirts from now on. We cant be blaming men for their bad behaviour when there are (shock!) legs on show.

So I guess you think its ok for builders to sexual harass women walking past in summer wear and its all just too terribly woke and PC that they cant now and... and... and... snowflakes and stuff innit.
