Supermarket checkout person basically said I would steal from them

I had a voucher for a free bag of apples which I tried to use today, expires in 2 days. The checkout wasn’t working properly and the voucher wouldn’t scan. I showed him at the till that I had the voucher. When it wouldn’t scan he asked me to come back another day to use the voucher. I said no, I’d rather try a different till. it was really busy so he said ‘fine, just take them but don’t use the voucher. Even though I know you will.’
and then after a pause, really sarcastically added ‘everyone does’

I’m really pee’d off by the experience. I had to wait because the checkouts were all having problems, fine, not his fault, but then the really pointed snide remark.

... Why waste your energy or time giving this a second thought? What is it with Mumsnet users and spats with cashiers?!

What is it with Mumsnet users and spats with cashiers?!

I’ve always wondered the same.

You said yourself it was busy and tills were playing up. He probably just got frustrated at your persistence for a free bag of apples.

NewsdeskJC · 04/06/2025 20:41

Well why didn't he just take the voucher then? 🙄

Supermarket vouchers are notorious for not working. Guess people are fed up all round. I do agree that I would probably think what a rude so and so but would just move on with my day.

I do however think that some supermarket staff really need to be politer - I appreciate it’s not the most exciting job, but I can’t tell you the amount of times I’ve asked for help at self service and someone rolled their eyes and dragged their feet. I’m literally not asking for anything outside of scope of your job, just to approve an item. Consider changing jobs if you really hate it that much.

Surely he's just given you another free lot of apples

Win win
